That’s a good lesson to teach a young person. Winning is the only thing. Teach a young kid to seethe and hate themselves after they lose a game. That’s one of the biggest lessons I learned from playing sports. Learn from your mistakes today and play better tomorrow. It’s helped me through my life.
So teaching kids to celebrate and put the spotlight on them and all about ME, ME, ME when their team is hurting is a good lesson? What about humility and being humble?

Nope. Let's dance around with a crown on our head and sit in a giant throne down 35 on national TV.

Send in the clowns indeed!
I'm going to read in between the lines here and say that he didn't endorse the "ME, ME, ME". Rather, I think he's stating that the life lesson is that winning isn't the only thing that matters.

I'm of the opinion that preparing, and playing to win is what matters most.

You are correct! I’m not embarrassed by a loss, but I certainly prefer to win. I’m not for gaudy displays, win or lose. I remember as a kid growing up in Cleveland, when endzone celebrations and spiking the football started to take off. The Browns didn’t do that for a long while. When they scored they merely handed the ball to the ref. I think Blanton Collier’s quote was “ act like you’ve been there before”. It made an impression on me.

Didn't we do all this sideline stuff the past few years and nobody cared. I though it was a god morale booster at the time. It's hard to turn this stuff off and on when you are winning and losing. I did care about Walton's excessive celebration -- Frank would have got in his grill far more than Albin did.

It don't think we had the throne and crown, just the helmet for TDs and the chain(?) for INTs. Is the helmet just for RBs and the throne for receivers? I know I saw the helmet but I'm not sure who was wearing it. And certainly if they use both to celebrate a TD that's really over the top. I don't think there's another team at any level that has multiple sideline gimmick celebrations for the same score.

This isn’t hard. If you’re down by more than one score, don’t do it. If the game is within one score, do it.

Celebrate plays that are meaningful. Take the ones that are the road back to meaningful in stride and celebrate quietly with your teammates.

Not hard. Anything other than that is pure vanity. Any player who whines somebody else got a crown in a 10-7 game and they didn’t in a 49-7 game probably isn’t a guy I want in my huddle.

I love pure, uncut celebration that organically is inspired by the situation. I don’t like people who want to tamp that down. But I haaaaaaaate contrived, pre-programmed celebration.

I know it’s not the point point, but I can shed a little light on things. The helmet is for anyone who scores a TD. QBs only sign on rushing TDs though. Passes the WR signs. I don’t know if a chain exists. When C-Rodge was here it was the belt, but that was his and it may have left with him. I don’t remember any turnovers last season to verify if it’s still around or what the new prop is. The throne may very well be an anyone can use it thing too. Not to throw shade at anyone directly, but I think it’s meant for the more center of attention players. For instance, Nathan would sign the helmet and salute, but when that wrapped he immediately got on the phone. I highly doubt you’d ever catch one of the Luehrmans in that thing as they were the same way.

Unrelated to the tweet LOVE posted, buy every time I see Russ' coaches show tweet and it shows Albin in an untucked shirt I just think to myself "Its the little things that matter."

As a guy who rarely tucks his shirt in unless called upon for work, I hate that is gets me but this guy is the supposed leader of our football program. At least ACT like it.

Folks, Albin could be the worst coach in history, but he isn't going to get canned. He has a four-year deal, and this is a cash-strapped university that isn't going to eat this contract.

It has been discussed in a few other threads, but per Albin's contract, the university only has to pay Albin out during the first 2 years if they fire him during that time. Contract renegotiations occur after Dec 31 2022, where they can choose to restructure, leave contract as is, or part ways and not pay any liquidated damages.

He's not going away this season or next, but I would imagine if he can't manage at least a 5 or 6 win season during that time he'll probably be let go.

In 1916, A's manager Connie Mack created a Code of Conduct for his club, which he posted in the clubhouse.

•I will always play the game to the best of my ability.

•I will always play to win, but if I lose, I will not look for an excuse to detract from my opponent's victory.

•I will never take an unfair advantage in order to win.

•I will always abide by the rules of the game—on the diamond as well as in my daily life.

•I will always conduct myself as a true sportsman—on and off the playing field.

•I will always strive for the good of the entire team rather than for my own glory.

•I will never gloat in victory or pity myself in defeat.

•I will do my utmost to keep myself clean—physically, mentally, and morally.

•I will always judge a teammate or an opponent as an individual and never on the basis of race or religion.

Over 100 years later, these are still outstanding words to live by, regardless of the sport.

The problem is the program is playing like the rankings of our recruiting classes. Mediocre play from every unit.

The sport is going through changes. Name and Likeness. Transfers. Expanded playoff. This is not 2005 anymore where a great walk-on program is enough. If Julie wants to redeem herself she give Tim the pink slip after the season is over. He should be fired already but out of respect wait to the end of the season.

Redeem herself for what? Solich retired without notice, and she managed to negotiate a two year out on a situation where she basically had no leverage.

The reality here is that had she put the interim tag on Albin, and recruits left, people here would be blaming that decision for the terrible start. Had she gone out to the market and she a search, recruits would have left, the new coach wouldn't have had time to bring in their own class. Everybody here would then be blaming an 0-4 start on that decision, and talking about how "stability was the right path" and how Frank had earned the right to choose his successor.

There was no good path for Cromer here. The in-house options were bad, the longtime head coach who the field will end up named after had a successor in mind, and there wasn't time to conduct a real search.

Given all that, and the leverage Albin had, that there's a free out after two years is pretty remarkable. We should be praising Cromer right now.

SBH said Albin wouldn't accept interim. Julie could have given it to another coach in that veteran staff that would accept an interim.

Albin wasn't necessarily the only option.

Excellent reminder of what is truly important. Thank you. It’s too bad that many of the comments here don’t live up to those ideals.

One thing I ask on all this ... Would our fanbase be as upset if Cromer had cleaned house when Frank hung it up ... hired an interim or an outside coach with the understanding the program is in a transition?

I think what upsets me (and maybe many) is we knew this would be the outcome with Albin.

I, for one, would be less disappointed by 0-4 knowing that this is bad timing on top of a new staff, etc. Instead we have a guy who very few seem to have confidence in guiding the program the next two years ... so the feeling is almost hopeless.

The hope will have to wait I guess until the end of 2022. Until then, may the tailgate beers remain cold and sun continues to shine thru October.

I was secretly hoping she would clean house just so we could get a fresh perspective. And with that I would have expected a transition period for sure.

I wasn't sure I was expecting THIS bad with Albin, but I was just so apathetic toward the move that I just sighed and said, "ok, I guess."

Would have been awesome doing a nationwide coaching search for a head coach and 10 assistants in July. That is a sure way to get the best candidates.

While your point is fair, and pretty accurate, the point he makes and others feel, is that this program had developed a stagnant feel before Albin. To that end, I agree with the need (and some fans desire) to clean house. I also know it wasn't something that could have been done this year to get a credible head coach to give him time to hire a competent staff.

When the dust settles on this season will be the time to decide on whether to clean house or not. If he returns, Albin is going to have to look at how to inject new ideas and life into the program. Staying at the status quo in terms of the staff and systems isn't going to work. The old "we have to work harder, and prepare better" isn't going to get this program a MAC title, assuming that's the goal. If it isn't, that's fine, just don't say that it is.

This is the outcome you get when your program's been so bad historically that the university and fanbase were willing to celebrate mediocrity as success for two decades.

We won zero MAC championships. We got some participation trophies at shitty bowl games. Last year there was a debate on this board about the biggest win in OU football history, and the conclusion reached was that it was beating a sub-par Pitt team in Solich's first game. People here, with a straight face, insisted it was bigger than the basketball team's many NCAA tournament wins.

Programs and organizations set the bar for themselves. We set it very low for ourselves. This is what happens when you do that.

Now, in our defense, we're competing at a level we're not able to compete at. So there are external factors competing against us. But that doesn't excuse the fact that the fanbase made an implicit promise to treat mediocrity as success for a very, very long time. What we've learned is that you fall to irrelevance from mediocrity very quickly. Had we actually been successful, the fall would take longer.
