He’s doing the same thing he did when he came here.....working hard and turning heads.

I think worst science scenario is that he makes the practice squad....still quite an accomplishment.

Remember, they start with 90 players, of whom probably 30 are a "sure thing" to make the final cut (the starters, rotational players, and high draft picks). That leaves 60 players vying for the remaining 23 spots, plus the practice team spots, of which there are 10 (11, if one is a foreign player). So, of the 60 who aren't "sure things", 33 will be retained, either on the roster, or on the practice team. Thus, at this point, it's still a 50:50 deal.

If anyone can go from mini-camp invite to the final roster, it's AJ.

If AJ does make the team, that will tell you something about Solich's ability to recognize talent immediately. I will always remember that, back before AJ had even earned his scholarship, that sneaky Solich swapped numbers on AJ and insisted that AJ wear his old number, 45. That's the only time I've ever seen Solich do that.

So last season the Saints RBs were all over 220lbs. However, the Patriots have done well with one #34 Rex Burkhead at 5'10" and 215lbs. "Players" come in all sizes.

The most important thing is the exposure that AJ will get. God bless the Saints, Go AJ

Good stuff. I knew it was Solich's number but I did not know Solich had a hand in that.

There is a quote from one of the classic NFL films with John Facenda where he says "no player had mined the ore of his talent so completely as ?" that always reminds me of AJ.

There was an article at the time about AJ picking up his gear, and saying "What? 45? This isn't one of the numbers I requested. Why did I get this number?" and the equipment manager, with a twinkle in his eye, saying something along the lines of "Solich insisted on it".

"A late addition after Saints rookie minicamp, Ohio University’s A.J. Ouellette is all thump looking for something to hit between the tackles.
Ohio University’s A.J. Ouellette (pronounced Oh – LET) is going to make the running back competition in training camp one for the record books. A late addition to the roster after a tryout on an invite following Saints rookie minicamp, this kid is something special."

"....But, make no mistake, A.J. Ouellette is an athlete. And he is strong. Capital S strong. On the 225-pound bench press, he registered 32 reps. If performed at the NFL Scouting Combine that would have placed him third all-time among running backs in that event."

Very nice quote. And what a record: third all-time among RBs! Impressive!

So, it seems that the RB from Kennesaw State (Darnell Holland) was released when AJ was signed. The running back on last year's practice squad (Martez Carter) was also released. That leaves 5 running backs. Alvin Kamara is the projected starter, and Latavius Murray is the projected backup. That leaves two rookies, AJ and Devine Ozigbo, plus last year's number 3 back Dwayne Washington. From those final three, one will make the team, one will make the practice team, and one will be cut.

Here's another article in that series:

We won’t even attempt to sort out who’s going to the practice squad or getting cut out of this group. It will be a full-on battle throughout training camp and preseason to see who makes it and who doesn’t.

Just shows how tough it is to land a NFL job. Let’s hope he gets another chance, I have to believe he will.

A.J. had a tryout with the Chiefs last week. Unfortunately it did not result in him being signed. Hopefully he will still get a shot! The guy can play - just needs a chance and the right fit.

If AJ can stay healthy I expect at least practice squad and possibly suiting up due to injuries at some point and really turning heads..ala Rex Burkhead type
I think Louis Riddick's job is safe.....

OUlette gets invite to Saints rookie camp.
AJ is an all-time Ohio great and I hope he is able to keep moving forward with his career either as a player or coach. Little question of his status as an all-time Ohio great.

Couldnt be happier. Lots of folks out there that deserve a shot at the NFL but no one I can think of more in the last 30 years than AJ. I hope he makes it

Below are pictures of AJ. With Kareem Hunt And duke Johnson being down, AJ should get a lot of carries on the Aug 8th preseason game.
