Maybe something Albin should consider.

Beats getting fired, be it after this season (fingers crossed) or next.

"retiring" vs "asked to move on" - my money is on Albin told to make changes.

They are certainly not old enough to do the normal retirement to collect social security or a pension.
They may retiring from football to pursue other occupations. I don’t personally know either guy but I certainly wish them well in their future endeavors and I really mean that

The offense was abysmal at the start of the year but looks better recently. The defense had been consistently bad all year. If changes were ordered this could easily be where. It is better to allow a long time staff member to retire than to announce that they were let go. It is easy to think that this is indeed what happened.

I agree and thought the same Victory. I also genuinely wish them nothing but success.

They both spent a long time in Athens and that means something to me. All the best men!

Find a way to get the UAB or South Alabama DC to move to Athens.

Not certain, but Germano, at 61, should be eligible for some retirement benefits from the state of Ohio. If he could find a public job in OH for a few more years, his benefits would be better.

Shows what little you know! Pete is definitely old enough. Family is grown and he’s going to enjoy life. He’s a good man and I wish him well

I wonder how much input Albin had on this. Collins definitely had to go--the defense declined sharply under his watch. I wonder what the profile of the new DC will be. I hope it is a younger guy who has shown success elsewhere. This team needs new blood.

He seems a lot younger and yes I don’t know everything like you do.
By the way, if he’s 61 like someone said , he’s not old enough for social security as I said above. Just because your family is grown doesn’t mean you’re old enough to retire.

I wish them both well.

No, you know more than most others. Pete is early 60s so still working towards SS - especially at full level from his stay at other jobs. Ron isn't close to sniffing 60, so still needs to put in some time. We've paid them well by Athens standards for certain, and there should be pension available for their time at Ohio via OPERS, but as you stated, SS is not in the immediate picture. All said, they won't be relying on local food kitchens,

It is called Windfall Elimination. The inclusion of SS into this discussion is probably not relevant for coaches employed by the state.

State workers DO NOT pay into Social Security but may collect it if they have income that was required to be "taxed" by the system. However, that income whenever taken will be offset by pension income.

MANY in the state system retire in their 50's with a state pension and will never get a cent from Social Security. A coach who has been well paid and has been a prudent handler of his/her disposable income could easily afford to opt out several years before a state pension kicks in by spending savings. The tough expense is buying health insurance coverage. The need to buy individual insurance is the number one reason why even more people do not call it quits earlier. (except those forward thinking guys who marry a younger gal so that she can work and provide the health benefits while the guy does whatever waiting for Medicare at 65!)

From SS site:
"The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), enacted in 1983, reduces Social Security benefit payments to beneficiaries whose work histories include both Social Security–covered and noncovered employment, with the noncovered employment also providing pension coverage. To be affected by the WEP, an individual must have worked in covered employment long enough to qualify for Social Security benefits; must have also worked in noncovered employment, meaning that Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) Social Security payroll taxes were not paid; and, importantly, must have earned a pension in that noncovered job."

One reason why many HS teachers take summer jobs in the private sector is to have time worked on a SS job so that they get at least little something out of it, especially later on if they retire from teaching in their 50s and work in the private sector. (Another reason is that pay for teachers, especially young teachers, usually sucks.) I had 22 years in the private sector and 23 as a state employee so I wound up with just about all my SS benefit.

My first read on this is Albin trying to save his job: "Our horrible play this year ain't my fault, it's the fault of these lousy assistants. I'll hire new ones, and we'll be off the races next year." [probably not far off an actual quote, but in reality it's just what I'm imaging he said and/or thought]

Perhaps he's taking much needed steps to hold his staff accountable for poor performance. Something Frank did not necessarily do.

Of course it does, unless you're Frank Solich and you are considered a legend for winning zero titles in 16 years with one of the leagues highest football budgets. Frank protected his buddies to the detriment of the program, which regressed for multiple years.

As I thought about this announcement 1 question came to mind?

WHY WOULD THESE 2 COACHES MAKE THIS ANNOUNCEMENT, WITH 1 GAME LEFT IN THE SEASON?

Why not just wait till after the last game?

I guess we will need to wait to understand the WHY?
