The offense was abysmal at the start of the year but looks better recently. The defense had been consistently bad all year. If changes were ordered this could easily be where. It is better to allow a long time staff member to retire than to announce that they were let go. It is easy to think that this is indeed what happened.

By the way, if he’s 61 like someone said , he’s not old enough for social security as I said above. Just because your family is grown doesn’t mean you’re old enough to retire.

No, you know more than most others. Pete is early 60s so still working towards SS - especially at full level from his stay at other jobs. Ron isn't close to sniffing 60, so still needs to put in some time. We've paid them well by Athens standards for certain, and there should be pension available for their time at Ohio via OPERS, but as you stated, SS is not in the immediate picture. All said, they won't be relying on local food kitchens,

It is called Windfall Elimination. The inclusion of SS into this discussion is probably not relevant for coaches employed by the state.

State workers DO NOT pay into Social Security but may collect it if they have income that was required to be "taxed" by the system. However, that income whenever taken will be offset by pension income.

MANY in the state system retire in their 50's with a state pension and will never get a cent from Social Security. A coach who has been well paid and has been a prudent handler of his/her disposable income could easily afford to opt out several years before a state pension kicks in by spending savings. The tough expense is buying health insurance coverage. The need to buy individual insurance is the number one reason why even more people do not call it quits earlier. (except those forward thinking guys who marry a younger gal so that she can work and provide the health benefits while the guy does whatever waiting for Medicare at 65!)

"The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), enacted in 1983, reduces Social Security benefit payments to beneficiaries whose work histories include both Social Security–covered and noncovered employment, with the noncovered employment also providing pension coverage. To be affected by the WEP, an individual must have worked in covered employment long enough to qualify for Social Security benefits; must have also worked in noncovered employment, meaning that Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) Social Security payroll taxes were not paid; and, importantly, must have earned a pension in that noncovered job."

My first read on this is Albin trying to save his job: "Our horrible play this year ain't my fault, it's the fault of these lousy assistants. I'll hire new ones, and we'll be off the races next year." [probably not far off an actual quote, but in reality it's just what I'm imaging he said and/or thought]
