My first read on this is Albin trying to save his job: "Our horrible play this year ain't my fault, it's the fault of these lousy assistants. I'll hire new ones, and we'll be off the races next year." [probably not far off an actual quote, but in reality it's just what I'm imaging he said and/or thought]
Perhaps he's taking much needed steps to hold his staff accountable for poor performance. Something Frank did not necessarily do.
Isn't the buck supposed to stop at the top? Or doesn't that apply anymore?
All I’m saying is that I’ve seen this movie before, and it’s always ended the same way. HC is on the hot seat; HC fires some assistants (or they “retire”); HC buys himself another year or two; HC’s record doesn’t improve much if at all; HC is fired. Maybe this time it’ll have a different ending, but color me skeptical.

Shouldn't a new head coach get to choose his own assistants? Albin didn't have that opportunity for obvious reasons.

The more I read about these two guys the more I am convinced it’s a matter of player recruitment rather than their coaching styles.

I think It’s a matter of both, but I’m coming around to your way of thinking about recruiting, which needs to be ratcheted up a notch or two. We ought to be able to recruit at least as well as as Toledo or WMU!

When you state this you are admitting that Frank has a big hand in the decline of OHIO football. Coaching style did not change over the month of July.

Last coach who did not get to hire their own staff and took what was given was Brian Knorr.

Well, it appears Frank knew how to get more out of the talent on hand than Tim. Does anyone here think Frank would have gone 3-9 with this team?

Huh? Entire staff went with Grobe. Knorr had to build entire staff from scratch.

Looks like some coaching changes have helped Michigan.

Is Tremayne Scott close to being ready to take a bigger role in the defense staff? Would appreciate input from someone with more in depth knowledge than I.

Billy, those that have followed me on this but blog know that I have complained about recruiting for years. We are always near the bottom of the Mac and do not recruit enough good players at the same time to win a championship. And don’t tell me The recruiting services don’t know what they’re talking about when they rate Ohio recruits. All MAC recruits are rated in the same manner. Ours are just always to the middle or bottom of the pack.

Truth Hurts. During the Frank Solich era we've never had a #1 recruiting class in the MAC. Our current class (if i can even say that, since it's literally 2 verbals) appears to be one of the worst in a long long time. I'm seeing FCS teams with more verbal commits than OU. It's quite sad.

Are we not recruiting? Are we not putting out offers? It's ok, OU apparently prides themselves on putting out the least amount of offers...and apparently the least amount of commits...

Grobe did, however, Knorr did not hire at least 4 of his coaches. They were given to him by the Athletic Director. Hence, how you got Kish and Gregory. Neither would have been hired by Knorr. Hell, Kish had zero experience with the Defense that Knorr ran under Grobe. That was a huge failure, but that was the product of the AD, not the Head Coach.

I've not disagreed with you on recruiting in anyway.

Sorry Billy, might have confused you with the OCF. At any rate, the point is recruiting has been poor and Albin did not get as much out of the players as Solich did.

I would think this is a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY for Cromer to set the program back on track by getting Albin to hire two new guys who are young, hungry and possibly come from winning smaller programs so that we have two guys who are ready to take over for Albin next year when he takes us, inevitably, sub-.500 again. I would think that a D coordinator for a team like Coastal Carolina or Liberty would get a pay hike and enjoy the challenge if they were told they could duke it out to take a program over. We still have name recognition with Frank. Let's go and make this happen!!!!

Coastal Carolina's head coach makes 850k. Liberty's makes 4 million.

Amongst FBS schools, the MAC has the lowest pay scale for coaching staffs.

Not sure how that flows to coordinators, but suspect it does.

It does but there are examples out there where MAC schools have paid up to bring in an OC/DC for 250k or 300k in spot situations.

Why put a band aid on a bleeding artery? One new DC is not going to make this program better. Clear out the entire staff and start over. BTW, if I am any type of good HC I will not stay at a program that dictates who my staff is. Conversely if I am a good coordinator I am not going to go to a program which will probably be a one year stint at best.
