Oregon OC Joe Moorhead is indeed the #1 target for Akron. Expected to formally announce the offer/hire after Oregon plays in the PAC 12 title game.

I keep asking myself that same question. He could get a way better job than that. Unless he's seeing some kind of untapped potential that none of us do, I don't get it. Or he could just be trying to get closer to home? (from Pittsburgh)

Does seem like a strange move. He should be getting high P5 interest.

Who knows, maybe Akron is finally going to pay huge $$$. Strange they haven’t done this yet.

Maybe he thinks he can work some magic in the transfer portal because otherwise, he's got the same type of talent that Mt Union, a few miles to the southeat has. It would be the reclamantion project of all time, if he could do what Terry Bowden and others could not.

Portal magic may be OUr only chance.

I have seen a few JUCO offers in the last two days.

He spent 4 years at Akron earlier in his career - so he knows what he's getting into.

Bob Stoops will reportedly make $325K for coaching Oklahoma in their bowl game.

Some of y'all still wanna try and compete at this level?

Stepping stone to a Big Ten gig is my guess. An 8-4 season at Akron will do that. Build up the midwest connections, have the Oregon pedigree, and overachieve a little at Akron where you have some comfort level. He may actually be leaving a better job as he may take a pay cut to coach Akron. However, it sets him up for better paydays in the future.

And the list keeps growing; Steve Addazio fired by Colorado State. It was a disaster from the beginning and I'm glad they did it. That new facility deserves better football.

For those who don't know, instead of hiring a search firm for their coaching search, Colorado State took the the advice and recommendation of Urban Meyer in hiring Addazio.

Reports that Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall will step down from the team following their bowl game. In a coaching season full of weird ones, this one is pretty shocking. He was just starting to turn them around.

So this year it’s 10 million dollar salaries, how long will it take to be 15 or 20 mil? 20-30 million dollar buy outs, no problem. This seems just crazy. Sure there’s a lot of money in the sport, but it seems everybody is chasing rainbows. These teams paying 8-10 million can’t all win a championship. It’s a feeding frenzy that I can’t believe can continue, but it will.
And the backlash of all this: Congress will look into making colleges spend more on athletes. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2021/12/01/college-... /

It is time to get out of this sandbox. We don’t have a 60,000 seats stadium and we don’t have millions to throw around. No sense at all in trying to keep up with the Jones’s in this arms race. Time for a new division in college football that is not professional plus in nature.

Dropping down a division is not the answer.

With the way things are going between coaching salaries/firings, major conferences expanding to include the bigger brands and smaller pieces of the pie being divided out, we may not have to drop down. It's gonna happen on its own.

I have to say that the College football landscape was getting pretty stale and predictable there for awhile. That's not the case now. I wonder who is going to end up going bankrupt though trying to chase the dream, so to speak?

If a bumbling idiot/moron gets paid $535(k)to coach than why can't a competent person get paid $10(mil) to coach?

Note: figures are based upon annual salaries.

Doc, I believe I was referring to a NEW division. We certainly do not fit in the current “big time“ division. It is time to get away from schools that will pay $10 million for a football coach.

To put things in perspective, when it comes to FBS conferences like the MAC.

According to an article in today's The Record, the combined salaries for the head coaches for the 12 MAC schools, excluding pandemic pay reductions, was $7.8 M.
For the Sun Belt's 10 schools it was $8.61 M.

As the article says, take your pick,10 or 12 equals less then 1.

It's the difference between having a legitimate shot at a national championship in the near future and the pipe dream of maybe, just maybe one day being considered for a NY6 bowl. It's that shot at a national championship that makes "P" team fan bases want to pony up more for football programs. It'll be interesting to see if Cincy's boosters bump up their contributions now that the Bearcats are in the playoff and heading for the B12.
