Athlon preseason publication is probably what the MAC media poll will have later in July. Toledo will be the favorites with the Bulls, Bobcats and Redhawks close behind.

I had to check because I knew it had been at least before the pandemic. It has been a very long time since the preseason favorite won. The last was Toledo in 2017. I'd guess that is the longest streak in FBS.
I should say for clarification that this 2017 statement is based off of the coaches poll or media poll done at MAC media day. Finding betting odds that far back would be next to impossible and, like this year, the favorite might be different depending on where you look. But, that got me thinking. Media day should be sometime in July. I don't think it has been announced. I looks like every other FBS conference has a known date. It looks like the data and location have usually been announced in April in the past. Are we not having one?

I have to agree that Toledo is going to be the favorite there. If the betting odds; which over time are probably likely to be more accurate than a coaches poll, media poll, or magazine, or preseason computer ranking; have Toledo and Ohio as basically co-favorites, I suspect, like Bobcat1996, we'll be closer to Buffalo and Miami in the poll. I'm not even sure why I think that. It is just a guess.

FYI, for those interested Media Day is July 24 at Ford Field. There doesn't seem to be a peep about in the MAC website yet though.

I just noticed this ranking at it isn't big on Toledo at all so I guess we'll see. It does look like Toledo is now the favorite on just about every online betting site, however.

I feel much worse about the defensive front than the offensive front. Before Taylor and Henderson entered the portal late in the cycle I felt good about our chances to be the MAC favorite. The front 6 on defense looks like the big question to me.

Oline probably has fewer ?s than the Dline.

Starting tackles are basically both a returning starter as Rhodes was before the portal.

Center guy played a little but I think we signed an Ivy League starter.

Guards have played a little and we have a transfer there as well.

The most interesting lineman is the USC guy. At 6’7”-340 I think he needs to see the field. If it was me I’d have him starting at right guard….but that’s me the guy who likes players that clear the road….road graders.

I missed that we are getting Shedrick Rhodes back. That is big (and he is big, which I agree with Doc is important)

The O Line will return one starter in D Weatherspoon, who played really well last fall. The OL also gets back Shedrick Rhodes a starter in 2023 for Ohio who got in the portal and moved to Rutgers last season. Rhodes played only a tiny bit for Rutgers. They lose Dennison, Tittsworth, Heidecker and Atkinson. Those starters will be tough to replace. The defense loses four quality plyers up front. Weaver to Rutgers, Henderson to Missouri, Rice to Maryland and Doggette to FAU. They also lose Taylor at LB and starter Leake and Schmitz. All those guys will be missed.

I love the coaching staff's ability the last few years in finding under-the-radar FCS, D-2 and even D-3 guys to step in like Heidecker, Leake and Owen. Who knows who will step up this year but on the O-Line, Waite from Shippensburg and Marinaro from Dartmouth both were consistent starters the last few years. D-Line is going to feel some bumps and bruises, but once again, we don't know how guys like Odjugo, Hermann, Heagens, Luqman, Dukes and Marsh will respond. Some small college guys in there, some D-1 big school guys from Vandy, Boise and Central Michigan. Last year we didn't know how Blake Leake from Little Ol' Bucknell or CJ Doggette (highly recruited but no time at Cincy) or Cam Rice (small school) would do and they kicked butt. This year will be interesting.

Well, it probably isn't a surprise that Ohio is the favorite again. Between Toledo losing to WMU and Ohio losing to Ball State, Ohio got down close to even money. It looked like the Bobcats were the only good team. Now, everyone has realized that there aren't any good teams but other schools have taken turns being the betting favorite. Ohio is the betting favorite again now.

Draf Kings betting odds with teamrankings.com percent chance in parenthesis
Ohio +140 (37.5%)
Miami +230 (15.6%)
WMU +450 (19.1%)
Buffalo +750 (9.5%)
Toledo +900 (16.6%)
CMU +2500 (1.7%)
Ball State +15000 (0.0%)
