Could just be a combination of homesickness and/or wanting to play with his brother, but Miami's Ivan Pace Jr., 2021 All-MAC First Team Defense, has transferred to UC. Something seems a bit off in Oxford...

I wonder if it's because the MAC is a bad conference to play football in and Cincinnati just played in a four team tournament for a national championship?

I must ask the question; Why would somebody be willing to make a lateral, a real lateral move. There must be more to this story. It could be the $'s although I doubt it, it could be a promise to keep your job after Tim is fired after next season although I doubt it as well. Something is not right. Was he being terminated at Miami and given a few months to find a new position and Ohio was his best option?
Let's do some digging on this hire.

One possibility that nobody here is gonna like is that Albin's been given assurances that he'll get the full four years of his contract to figure things out. That seems unlikely to me, but it does seem like a strange move otherwise.

If that's the case ,we need to start a Go Fund Me Page for Tar and Feathers. :-)

Maybe the new DC was given assurances that he'll be at the head of line
for interviews for HC after next season.

I really don’t care a bunch about how it happened….albeit the mention of being near the head of the line if Albin gets axed is intriguing.

I’m just glad to have someone with experience and fire.

The fire part may be the most important as this team needs a fire lit under them.

Maybe I drink too much Green Kool-Aid but this is the MAC so I reserve total judgement of what will happen until the games are actually played. You simply never know in this conference. Look at Neu and Hammock. Rough starts inheriting solid programs in their own rights but both made changes and got the ship righted.
I will say this program can’t be allowed to drop into mediocrity or worse. The defensive staff hires in my opinion are encouraging. Our friends from Oxford were fundamentally a much better defense than what we have seen here the last few seasons and just as important in my opinion we’re out recruiting the defensive staff here.
Interested to see what Spring practice looks like and some of the possible changes.

If last season is an example,we're at "mediocrity",at best right now and well on our way to "worse".

71 Bobcat posted a real interesting question about why this guy made what is at best a lateral move.
That needs to be looked at.
If he was that good, why is he here ?

I don’t know Spence Nowinski from Adam. I don’t know why he decided to make the move to Athens other than the obvious reason that Oxford sucks. I will say that last season I would have killed to have the Ohio defense play as well schematically as his group. Above are some stats from last season highlighting Miami’s defense vs Ohio’s. Not overly sure if Chuck sent him packing but it seems Coach Albin seemed quite happy to get him.

I totally agree. The old saying is that Defense wins championships. Ohio won the East in the years they had the best defenses. If the defense improves significantly, it may look like a different team, and everyone may be a lot happier. Albin and Nowinski are the coaches for next year, so grab the popcorn, and let's see how they do. There is no reason to worry about 2023 until they play some games next year.

No doubt it was "scheme and personnel. That leads to the question, was the scheme worse, the personnel, or both? Next year, Ohio will presumably have the scheme that Miami used, so we'll find out how Ohio's personnel compares with that of Miami.

Seeing how the scheme last year, was/is basically the same scheme from when Frank was the coach, I would say, a lot to do with personnel, personnel either NOT matching the scheme, or just personnel period.

Perhaps. Yet, two different coaches running the same scheme with the same personnel will not necessarily get the same result because of individual play calls, and because of adjustments. And certainly, two different coaches running different schemes will get different results, even with the same personnel.

I have no opinion on whether the new coaches will help or hurt. We will have mostly the same players, so we will get to compare the results and see what happens.

Edit - To clarify, in my initial post, when I said "was the scheme worse, the personnel, or both?" I was not comparing Ohio in prior years to Ohio in 2021. I was comparing Ohio in 2021 to Miami in 2021. Miami got better results, but was it personnel, or scheme, or both? You had both a different scheme, and different personnel, so it's hard to know the reasons for differences.

Next year Ohio will presumably use the scheme that Miami used in 2021, which will allow two separate comparisons:
1. The first will be to compare Ohio 2021 to Ohio 2022. Will the change to the coaches and schemes, but mostly the same personnel, make things better or worse? 2. The second comparison will be Ohio 2022 to Miami 2021. In the second comparison, you have the same scheme, but different personnel. Were Ohio's personnel able to run the scheme as well as Miami's personnel?

Bobcats--2 on defense All-MAC Third Team

Miami--2 on defense First Team
3 on defense Second Team
1 on defense Third Team

Better players make the players around them better.

If you took the worst NFL Defense and put them into ANY scheme they would throttle any MAC offense. Scheme with the proper talent to run the scheme is still second to good personnel.

Did the Buckeyes change their scheme last season? Their defense couldn't stop the run and gave up tons of yards. Scheme or personnel?

So if I’m a Fiami fan I’m feeling pretty good this morning.

We dumped two D coaches that we wanted to get rid of.

Doesn’t matter who we pick up as coaches since we have better players.

Doesn’t matter who is coaching Ohio since players are mediocre.

The choice was scheme or talent.

What it comes down to for OHIO is that these new hires have their work cut out and can hopefully elevate the players on hand to excel beyond the results of '21.

Cheering on the new hires to do their magic and recruit as well as they did in their prior gig.

The problem is that it's never just that simple. Both are important factors, but there are many others, as well. For example, a good coach is a teacher, and improves his players. A good coach is also a motivator, and inspires his players to improve, and to play their best. A good coach anticipates the strategies that the offense will use, and goes into a game with a solid game plan. A good coach sees the ways the offense is attacking his defense, and makes good adjustments. A good coach makes good calls on individual plays, with where to blitz one player, or two, or more. A good coach is also a good recruiter, and brings in successively better talent.

I have no opinion on how things will go next year. I'm content to wait and see.

If you’re bored and currently I am. Coach Nowinsky has an hour look into his single high 4-2-5 that he’s installing here. It’s from a Coach’s Clinic Presentation. Really good stuff.
