I'm a little confused. Are these guys a pair deal or something, or are we just looking at possibly hiring one of them?

The staff has two open spots. This is very interesting news. I don’t understand if they are Hawks looking to fly the coup or being asked to leave? Miami is ranked on the top 50 in a few defensive categories.

They are experienced coaches who have DC experience.

A bonus would be if they would bring along a couple of portal players.

In the transfer portal they have a WR and CB and DE….all areas of need.

I’m dubious about accepting any gifts from Oxford, Ohio, the vortex of suckiness.

Certainly intrigued by this story. Also of note that one has experience coaching the d line and the other a former safeties coach. Two holes that are left open by the departure of Germano and Collins. This could be interesting.

The fact that the special teams coach made a lateral move to UConn!!! and that the co-DCs both left without already having a job lined up raises some questions about working with Chuck Martin.

The two DCs have some pedigree to them. MOFO finished in the 40th-61st range in D1A in all but one major category -- passing defense efficiency, where they were 83rd. They were 41st in turnover margin, which is very good, and 15th in red zone defense, which is great. They held six teams to under 20 pts.

Neither of them is a MOFO grad, so if we run through the decontamination chamber they should be fine.

It would be nice to land both.

The article mentions one of the two may land a power5 job.

If that happens I’d be inclined to make the remaining one DC
and get a younger guy for the other opening.

Strike while the iron is hot.

With our generally low pay for assistants and the status of the program right now, I would think the qualified applicants would be fairly small. Probably lots of applicants with lesser than needed pedigrees.

Probably not our only option but maybe our best. Akron was lucky to get a HC who was willing to take a huge pay cut to get nearer his home. Don't know if we could be so lucky with assistants. Gotta think that a lot of the shine wore off our program last year.

If you go back and watch Albin's pregame presser for the Miami game, he talks about his friendship/relationship with one of the DC's at Miami. I can't remember which one he mentions specifically, but this news doesn't surprise me at all.

Coach Martin probably figured that those guys lead a defense that gave up the most points scored by Ohio all year and cost the redhawks a chance to be in the MACC. So why not get rid of them. But these are the guys we want? I’m just kidding, their overall defense was not that bad.

This seems like we are getting a DC that is no longer welcome in Miami's program. I don't think a program in our division and in our conference hands over their DC unless they want to upgrade. Why would we want Oxfords cast offs?
With the uncertainty facing the Albin era, I suggest we elevate an existing coach to be the acting DC. Seems less messy when the day of reckoning comes for this staff.

Given that we were in the bottom third of D1A in JUST ABOUT EVERY defensive category, why in the hell would we "elevate" someone on our current staff? Bringing someone new in next year might actually give us a chance for improvement. I really don't trust our current coaching staff to get better next season.

As for the DCs being "Oxford cast offs" and "no longer welcome" at Oxford: (A) They weren't fired, they left on their own, which indicates that they weren't happy with Martin, not the other way around; and (B) Not being welcome in Oxford might actually be a plus, given what we all think of MOFO.

Going to give this guy from Miami a 1 year contract?
Lets just wait and do a total reset after 2022 season.

So you're giving up on next year?

If a guy is willing to come to Ohio knowing that it might be a one-year gig, so be it. It's his choice. But if he's better than what we've got, go get him.

Yes, bail on next year. 4-8 or 5-7 is where we will be. Who wants a 4-5 year death spiral? Rip that Band Aid off and the sooner the better. One lame duck from Oxford will not fix what ails us.

I don't expect great things next year, and yes getting Albin out of here ASAP is what's needed. But it's not worthwhile having our players and fans go through another absolute embarrassment like this season was. Let's at least give the players some competent coaches to back them up. The players deserve at least that much. The DCs from Oxford seem to be more than competent.

Could just be a combination of homesickness and/or wanting to play with his brother, but Miami's Ivan Pace Jr., 2021 All-MAC First Team Defense, has transferred to UC. Something seems a bit off in Oxford...

Isn't Oxford about as close to Cincy as you can get? Homesickness doesn't seem legit as a reason.

I wonder if it's because the MAC is a bad conference to play football in and Cincinnati just played in a four team tournament for a national championship?
