From today's Washington Post:

Rogers’s opportunity

With so many injuries at tight end, Washington needed undrafted rookie Armani Rogers on a fair number of first-team reps Monday. Rogers, a converted quarterback out of Ohio, made the most of his opportunity by reeling in several tough snags that highlighted his 6-foot-5, 225-pound frame.
Though it seems unlikely Rogers will make a big impact this season — Thomas, Bates, Turner and Sammis Reyes are ahead of him on the depth chart — he’s showing promise as a pass-catcher. Ideally for Rogers, he could follow a similar path to Thomas, another converted quarterback.

Could follow in the MAC tradition of Josh Cribbs and Julian Edelman.

He's listed as the #5 TE on their unofficial depth chart. They'll be playing the Panthers tomorrow (Aug 13) at 1:00 ET on NFL Net's alternative channel. He'll be wearing no. 88.

Armani gets his number called early. Incomplete pass but almost Moss'ed the defender.

Looks HUGE.

With about two minutes to go he's been targeted five times, has three receptions for 16 yds, the longest being six yds. The game is blacked out up here, and is currently scheduled to be replayed on NFL Net only tomorrow at 4:00 a.m.

you can also watch austen pleasant as well (long shot to make panthers) though he and the rest of the o-line backups had a rough day. easy to spot with his hair.

In his NFL debut, he had three catches for 12 yards. I think he will be a practice squad candidate if he is cut.

Washington put Sammy Reyes, one of the TEs ahead of him on the depth chart, on IR yesterday, probably ending Sammy's season. Logan Thomas is still on the PUP list and the other 2 young TEs ahead of Armani are nursing injuries. There is a real chance for Armani to get a lot of playing time in the final 2 preseason games and to stick around either on the active roster or the practice squad.

I feel like with that TE situation and the fact that he has never played TE before that it is easy to think if they are liking what they see so far that they would like to keep him of the practice squad and see if he can continue rapid improvement. But we need to keep in mind that there are teams with more healthy TE depth than Washington and they could easily pick up a TE that one of those teams cuts.

/\/\/\/\/\ - agree

If they are thin at the position there's no way they put him on the roster to "bolster" it - simply too inexperienced. The best situation (which he is currently is in) is he gets a ton of playing time over next two games as they look at the waiver wire and then place him on the practice squad once they backfill the position.

Yeah, never playing TE before really hampered Antonio Gates too. Took him a long time to learn how to play the position when he transitioned into the position.

Logan Thomas too.... oh wait, Yea, more appropriate to compare him to a hall of famer. That's a fairer comparison for Amani. Also the curse of every QB taken in the 6th round.

+1

Hard to tell what will happen here, but it’s interesting how some have crystal balls with seemingly clear insight! (ROTFL)

Going into this my best hope for him was the practice squad. That will be a huge make for him since he is just leaning the position. But this team does have experience with the QB to TE. Good mentor.

don’t be. i have the advantage of following the panthers. washington coach ron rivera coached here for years and he highly values the tight end position - had greg olson as his starting tight end each year. so i know he’s not going to turn the position over to a rookie that never played the position (gates started 11 games his rookie season). that’s why the fairer comparison for rogers is thomas not gates.

Why not compare him to Kordell Stewart? Maybe after being used as a receiver for a couple of years, he can transition back to QB.

OK first half vs the Chiefs. Positives: targeted once, caught it for 15 yds; had a decent block on a 2nd and 1 that made getting the first down easier. Negatives: the guy he and the RT were double-teaming broke loose and sacked Wentz when he took off running on a pass play (coverage sack); called for pass interference when blocking downfield, but it was really on Wentz for throwing the ball past the line of scrimmage even though the receiver was behind the line.

BIG NEGATIVE: Injured. Walked to the locker room.

In the game now is 6th string TE, from beautiful Minster, Ohio Eli Wolf.

Armani is still on the Washington roster. They released two == WR Kelvin Harmon and T Rashod Hill -- and put three others on IR == he wasn't one of them so if he was injured vs the Chiefs, it apparently wasn't serious.
