What was the best bar in Athens when you attended? What was your favorite drink?

I have to go with Courtside. 50 cent slice night and 25 cent drafts on Tuesday.

Of course during offseason. Lol

The Deck for disco and dancing and CJ’s for jazz. I didn’t have a favorite drink as I was still figuring out what I liked. I was in experimental mode.

Depended on the day of the week for which bar.

3.2 beer of course.

The Deck in my day, the year before Disco, was a hopping scene with the Boss, spinning the tunes.

The Long Branch and the Front Room had nice atmospheres on certain nights.

Personally, I always enjoyed Nicklelodeon, The Pub and Tony's.

Not familiar with The Deck. Must have been before my time in Athens. Would have been nice to have seen Springsteen spinning the tunes.

Always like the Tap House and the Millview. In those days the dam was still there and the rush of the water pouring over it added to the ambiance. I really wish they’d rebuild that dam.

The Greenery, Nickelodeon and Function at the Junction were up there, along with the CI, but my favorite was $8 bucket of beer night at the Mug and Margarita on Thursdays. Many a brain cell were lost there.

Yes, forgot about the Mug and Margarita. Good call, Mark. And if you knew the bartender (an RA in our freshman dorm) you could get a bucket of beer for $1.

I'm not too far removed, so pretty much the same as they are today. Pawpurrs, Courtside...

Though the 32oz Mega Mug for $2 at Red Brick was the most elite deal on campus.

The Boss was the Boss Groover.

I was there when Springsteen wandered into Swanky's though.

Despite my silent objections, I probably spent the most time at the CI.

I always had a good time at the Blue Gator, usually seeing a great show.

Had the best women luck at the old Junction.

If you can get past it being a Steelers bar, I always thought Lucky's was a good place to kick it, shoot pool, and watch the game. Special shoutout to the time at Lucky's following the 2011 football slaughter vs Marshall when some dusty Herd fan consistently struck out hitting on every girl in the bar.

CI was #1 for me. We played foosball nightly.

Swanky's was up there.

When I lived on West Green The Graduate or Union were stumbled into on the way back to the dorm.

These brain cells may be dead but I think it was Conti's Inferno. Since I am fessing up to my age, The little Ritz and The Star Bar.

Club 33, now that's OLD school. My uncle who attended OHIO both before and after WWII always mentioned the Club 33 when he talked about his favorite haunts. I must confess that I was there a time or two in my younger days.

Conte's Inferno. Fun but a tad noisy. I did use it in a scene in one of my books that relates slices of OU history. For a beer AND conversation, I liked The Union on West Union.

Is there a BA poster with a bigger extended family than OCF? Not sure there's been a discussion on BA where OCF didn't have a relative connected to that discussion. Whether it's a relative in Ohio, New Jersey, west coast, New England, etc. . .

Uptown Bars had to close on Sundays.

Club 33 was open.

So it was always packed.

Living in NJ I didn't go home on weekends like a
lot of the guys in my dorm.

They'd come back early Sunday night and head to Club 33.
That was back in the 3.2 beer days,if you were under 21.

In the mid to late 70’s I liked the Deck and the Long Branch on weekends and on Wednesday andThursday nights it was Mr. Bojangles to listen to the Frogwhompers!

During the early 80’s, the “Phase” was the gathering spot for post game football players. Gobel bottles were ¢60 a bottle and for $5 bucks we could enjoy the entire evening with teammates during our 5 or 6 victories! If we had extra cash, Souvlaki‘s could finish off a great Saturday!!

I heard a story that there was a fantastic football player and as tough as nails, from the Nelsonville area circa early 60's. He went to OSU on scholarship but didn't stick. He and another were in Club 33 and challenged by older men. The two fastened something about their wastes to tie them back to back. Then they took on the gang of elders by protecting each other and throwing wicked punches by swinging each other around. Perhaps fiction but as a youngster at OU the story was lapped up by listening ears.
