How was traffic around the roundabout yesterday?  Easier to get in and out or worse?

I didn't come in that way.....used Radford and West Union and that was great.

On the way back home I tried it going straight through Richland onto 32....had zero problems but the traffic was light.

A giant improvement as a direct result of the roundabout was in the after game traffic. Having the continuous flow of traffic through the roundabout allowed the police to direct traffic at the Peden/Convo and Richland Avenue intersection and so the parking lots quickly emptied.

I thought it was better. I always used to get caught at the light there. Last night, I just rolled on through. Signage is very clear.

A piece of cake.

I can't fathom how anyone would have difficulties with this.

It was my first trip to Athens since it was built and it is great. I came around from 682 after the game and slungshot onto 33 in three seconds. Well designed and a big improvement. Kudos to the city for thinking outside the box. I love it.

From my pedestrian perspective, looked like the Richland/South Green light had far more backup than the roundabout when the 110 was finished post-game.

Coming soon, round-a-bout at Richland and South Green Drive, city already drawing plans.

Is the University on board with this?  It'll require a good deal of OU land to make this happen, including part of a Convo parking lot and the green space in front of Wrather Hall, where home plate used to be on the old baseball field.

The Richland project also required a decent amount of University land.  The University tried to tie the land to the opening of Bobcat Lane, and the city played hardball and pulled eminent domain and took two corners of the of the intersection and a swath for the pedestrian crossing.  I am not sure the City is real worried about what the University wants.

Will one of the lawyers on the board (Flomo, perhaps) please comment on this assertion that the city used eminent domain against the university.  I was under the impression that a city in the State of Ohio could not use eminent domain against a state university.  Thanks for any information that you can provide.

Edit: A trusted, but unnamed source (more reliable than your average Twitter Tweet), told me that he was fairly certain that no university land was used in the just completed roundabout.  It was, he said, all land that was either already owned by the State of Ohio, or right away controlled by ODOT, or land owned by the city (a very small edge of South Side Park).

I may be wrong here, but repeating what I was told, I have no other supporting evidence on this.

My master's program is in urban affairs and public policy and my undergrad was in political science and geography (urban planning concentration). I am not one hundred percent certain that the city could not take land from the university using eminent domain but I highly doubt that it would be able to. I know for a fact that the university, as an entity of the state, does not have to conform to city zoning ordinances. Adams Hall and Baker Center would not have met height restrictions that are in place if that were the case. I assume the university's status as an entity of the state would also bar the city from taking any land that is university owned.

As far as Bobcat Lane is concerned I had a conversation with a city council member on the issue. I can't remember the exact details, but the university was trying to bait the city to allow the curb cut in exchange for something the city wanted from the university. This is probably what JCW's source was thinking about. I can't remember what it was off the top of my head but I am 100% sure it was not land for the roundabout.

Are we talking about the access road to the Baker Center and Bird Arena?  If that is the case, I heard (an excuse possibly) from a current faculty member in the Geography department, that it would be too close to the bridge over the old river and railroad beds, which could possibly be a safety issue.

As I mentioned earlier, the largest issue last night was in fact the intersection of South Green Drive and Richland Avenue.

The university did free up some land for the rotary to be built.

Alas, the mayor still hates the university.

You're supposed to cite an unnamed source that you claim has more credibility than my unnamed source if you expected the BA masses to take your assertion seriously.

Maybe it's time for a new mayor.

Agreed. If I still lived in Athens I would vote for any BobcatAttacker who decided to run against him.
