Tressel defines class.

I'm sorry but I just can't let this pass without comment (especially this week).  The fact that the man wears glasses, a tie and a sweater vest; speaks in controlled grammatically correct statements; and happens to Coach the State's beloved team doesn't default him into defining class.

It's not hard to hoodwink the lemmings that pledge their allegiance to the perennial winner simply because it's the easy band wagon to ride.  When you really pay attention though, you see he's very much a part of what's wrong with College Football today...

Reference Robert Reynolds:

Suspended ONE game for choking an opposing QB on national TV.  Quoth The Vest..."It is also in my opinion that it was not something that is a part of who Rob is," Tressel said. "While it is something that was something unacceptable, it's also something that's tough to handle. I think Reynolds will do a good job of handling it well."  Tell that to his eventual Wife after she had to call the police for assistance as well...

Reference Santonio Holmes:

Sat the bench for all of a single SERIES for the Michigan game after his involvement in a domestic issue on campus that resulted in one girl being choked until she lost consciousness and left another with a a broken wrist.  The University classified the players roles as "peace keeping" and Tressel refused to comment.  He was instrumental in the win though, so mission accomplished I suppose.  I'm guessing all of the folks involved in his future domestic violence escapades would have very much appreciated nipping that aggression in the bud while The Vest was "developing young men".

Reference Maurice Clarett:

No way on God's green earth The Vest didn't know what kind of kid this was during recruiting.  Yet even though he's embroiled in all sorts of controversy, screaming at his own Coaches during games, publicly accusing OSU of lying, etc he plays on and eventually brings them what I like to call the Clarettionship.  Geiger himself (AD) later admitted he accepted special benefits that year and that's not even touching on the "oral exams" he was granted in place of the written exams all other students are required to take.  They got their year out of him and washed their hands.  This is a kid that had to be maced when the cops finally got their hands on him during one of his multiple future arrests when tasing didn't work because he was driving around wearing a bullet proof vest!  Another shining example of the development of the youth under Tressel's care.

Drinking and driving. Slumped over at the wheel. Vehicle facing the opposite direction on a one way street. Are we really going to play this game?

JCW:

Yes I agree and I'm among them...One of the things I actually liked about Knorr was the way he ran the program.  It's like a kick in the gut whenever an
Ohio player ends up on the wrong side of a situation and I fully support our staff erring on the side of stiffer penalties when these situations arise no matter the player.  Obviously kids of this age are going to occasionally make bad choices, which is exactly why it lies with their respective Coaching Staff's to guide them towards better decisions both while they're playing as well as later on in life.

The difference here (and this was exactly the point of my post) is that I'm referencing the fact that The Vest (and Ohio A&M historically) dispenses discipline differently depending upon the criticality of the player / approaching schedule (as those examples prove out).  In contrast, we suspended our starting tailback for half the season for his infraction.  I'm simply saying I grow weary earlier every season I live in
Central Ohio
when I have to listen to drivel like "Tressel defines class"...

Classic bobcattack missing of the point.  The issue is Tressel's class or not.  That has zero to do with our program.

Not saying that is an issue of any importance--just that if you're going to address the issue, then do not bring in 100% irrelevancies.

Bobcat36, you probably haven't been to Casa enough to have much impact on their bottom line so I'm sure that they won't be missing your business. Also, please continue living in your world of naivety.

It is in our best interest to toe the Boise State line in every discussion of college football. The Big Ten and SEC fans will say over and over and over that they would be a mid pack team in their conference. This is a dumb argument because it cannot be proved and until a Big Ten or SEC team grow their balls and plays them home and home or home and neutrual or at all, the point is moot.

The Big Ten and SEC run from these match ups. (NOTE: Pac 10 makes their schools take on Boise State and others. The ACC and Big East do, and even Texas shows up at Wyoming once in awhile). But, the Big 10 and SEC made up the rules for this crap and they sure as hell do whatever they can to keep their distance from those who could provide a flaw to their system.

Sure, Michigan can say they play ND every year and tOSU plays one quality non conf game a year, but the vast majority of the time the SEC and Big Ten run away as fast as they can when it comes to a ball sack testing match up. Penn State and Bama can talk about their match up this weekend and Tennessee playing Oregon, but the majority of the time they play the sisters of the poor AT HOME every other non conf week. Plus, now that the SEC and Big Ten (12) have gone Super Conference on us, they can tell us that they don't have the scheduling room to do home and homes with the likes of Boise State. You can't have a fair system when teams are playing 6,7, or 8 games at home every year!

This is friggin' idiotic. At least Boise State has decided to toe a line with this a-holes, the MAC just accepts that they have to go to Michigan, MSU, Penn State, Ohio State out of some sort of moral obligation. I'd make Ohio State pay for us to go to some place more exotic than Columbus (isn't this anyplace else?) At least they would have to work for something in this relationship!

Hate Ohio State all you want, but they dangle the carrot and we mule up and go to Columbus in the veiled hope that we can get them when they are bored and pull out a victory. I say we make Ohio State fly our asses to Hawaii or Bermuda or someplace nice. Give us a reach around for all this b.s. See if those wahoos who can't read get on a plane to see their band spell Ohio.

Boise wants to be a BCS caliber team but is asking for non-BCS payout money. Sounds like they are still trying to figure out their identity.

Yet if FSU were to go undefeated this year along with only one other BCS Conference team, FSU would play in the Title Game over a 1 loss anyone.

This is brilliant and a reason for why the system is so dopey.

If FSU goes through the season and only loses one, they will have won some big games.

If Boise is going to continue to build their program, they need to make a serious pitch to join the Big 12 minus 2. A playoff system is still years away, need to plan accordingly.

I'd ask for a million, too. While the article states that Nebraska asked for the home and home, it didn't claim that the $1million was in addition to a home game at Boise.

There is an implication of $1million in addition to the game @ Boise (which is awesome because BSU is totally being a d!ck), but I'm not so sure that's the whole story (and I'd like to hear the other parts of this "well balanced" <sarcasm where available> story).

What bothers me more (and supports my initial post) is...

"But it may happen again at NU. Beginning in 2015, the Big Ten is expected to play nine conference games, which means three nonconference games, which means three nonconference games likely at home — at least on the years when NU has only four Big Ten games at home. Seven home games pays the bills, folks."

Three non-conference games at home...no more than two (where is the away game going to be?!). No place in this "extremely well balanced article" <sarcasm where available> indicates to me that Nebraska and their ilk is doing anything in the name of balancing a schedule. Plus, with 9 conference games, the idea that the Big 10-12 will take that one road trip to a MAC school is remote. Which, further distances us from ever being a part of this system and placing us further behind financially (which is the most important part of this equation) from the BCS.

At least Boise State is giving the BCS a little crap for acting like they're doing everyone a favor by even asking to play them!

I must note that none of this really bothers me as a college football fan. I'd rather see Nebraska (and others) play a good schedule with lots of good teams. However, as an Ohio fan, we are fooling ourselves if we don't think the FBS-IAA subdivision (Again, MAC, Conf USA, and Sun Belt) are not getting screwed by these giant conferences.

No home and homes, no 2 for 1s. Basically, if we want to play ANYONE in the BCS, it will be on the road for a million and a respectable pat on the back for our good humor. (Not that we are scheduling big home games anyway).

Did anybody see the Nielsen Rating Boise State-Virginia Tech game drew? Boise has national cache. It has cache up the yingyang, and that means more television dollars for them in the future negotiations with their conference.

People didn't tune in to watch Virginia Tech on Monday, unless they enjoy the exciting drama of Beamerball. (And we know how much people love good punt team coverage, power running games and the quarterback stylings of Tyrod Taylor! It's Tresselball, but even more boring!)

Put Boise State against a BCS power on the blue turf and the ratings will be better than the big team's average conference game. Boise-Nebraska would get better rankings than Nebraska-Kansas or Nebraska-Missouri or Nebraska-Oklahoma State.

Boise is a lightning rod for college football fans. They unite fans of every other smaller school, and there are a lot of those people. Is some of it media hype and propping? Sure, but this is freaking football. We need more P.T. Barnum in the sport before it becomes the NFL. I want blue turf, I want to believe in a team from Boise, Idaho. Plus people like watching exciting, high-scoring fun teams enjoy themselves on a field. A novel concept — football that is fun to watch and play.

Boise deserves a million wherever they go. They bring out emotions and rooting interests from fans who don't even know where Boise is located.*

*I do not know where Boise is located within the state of Idaho.

Boise did draw a great rating.  So did Brett Favre.  So did OSU/Oregon and Bama/Texas.  What did not?  Boise/TCU (nice number, but nowhere close to the other two).

Boise's ego is starting to get in their own way.  If they really want to 'play with the big boys' then you have to play anybody, anywhere, within reason.  They should jump for a 2-for-1 against a team like Nebraska.  When they asked for $1M I bet Tom Osborne turned around looking for the Punk'd cameras.

As far as these teams coming to MAC stadiums, it's just bad economics.  Would you rather play at the 'Shoe and collect a paycheck, or have OSU come to Peden and have 92% of the stadium covered in Scarlet & Grey?  Easy choice for me, and a struggling athletic department.  If Peden held 65,000 people, maybe.  But until that day happens, we'll have to settle for our payday.

Sidenote:  Does anyone have any clue as to how Toledo convinced them to play in Cleveland?  I would love to see OU vs OSU in Browns Stadium, or in Cincy.  That would be enjoyable.

Then we should cut ties with tOSU football program.

Play Indiana or Illinois or Minnesota or NW or whatever...2 for 1. Quit conforming to the whims of an easy pay day to Columbus on the promise that "One day everything will work out for us!"

Going to Columbus to be a whipping boy...or a marginally good opponent...and picking up a hefty check is not good policy. Unless I misunderstood the lesson on "being a whore".

I'd call it remaining solvent. The OSU money was much needed.

Again...if we even take an implicit cheer against Boise State in the National Championship (or the national scene), we are shooting our own cause right in the foot.

Ohio fans should want any school NOT in the BCS to beat those schools firmly entrenched in the BCS.

Oh...Brian...sure, we remained solvent. The whore says "She gets paid."

Remaining solvent is fine, but there are a lot of schools willing to help out our cause by allowing us to be a bit more creativity than what we get from tOSU.

Beyond this...the formula of being solvent and getting one's arse whipped hasn't helped one team in the MAC so we need to force a change on our end.

Ever played the game "Why are you hitting yourself?" OK...here we are.

I wasn't cheering one way or the other. I was simply pointing out that Boise's win over Virginia Tech doesn't look so great today, unless you think they should play James Madison in the National Championship game. James Madison's win will probably hurt Boise in the polls and in the computers. I guess those idiots who voted Boise #1 in the country will now have to vote James Madison #2.

The fact that you felt it fair to compare Boise's SEASON OPENER to the ROSE BOWL and BCS TITLE GAME speaks volumes of the draw that Boise is.

What were the numbers on Ohio State's opener?  Alabama's?  Did Oregon have an opener?  *The last question is sarcasm

Cause the 'big boys' would also 'jump' at a chance at a 2-for-1 against Nebraska?  You realize you contradict yourself in your own argument right?

You either think
A) BSU should accept a 1-for-1 with NU for no additional monies
or
B) BSU should thank their lucky stars for a 2-for-1 deal and also get paid out like every other team that would take a  2-for-1

It isn't OSU, USC, or Bama's job to help bring Boise State to the top. They had the vision in the early stages of the sport. The earned it. They have reaped the benefits. They built themselves the position to deal with whomever they wish, on their own terms. Additionally, those teams realize they will have 2-4 legitimate in-conference games each season. They schedule in the non-conference accordingly.

Meanwhile, Boise State knows about their conference. They also know what the pollsters want to see from them. They are in no position to make demands.

I think Boise State knows their position all too well. They know they are a .500 football team against BCS conference schools since becoming a good program. They know they have lost to mediocre teams in bowl games (BC at home lol). They  also know there is a difference, both emotionally and physically, between getting ready for one big game and playing a big game immediately followed by another worthy opponent seven days later.

Boise State knows they are a darling. Why play "anyone, anywhere, anytime" (ie. earn it) when you can ride the waves of the bleeding hearts all the way to a "one-game" title shot?

Bobby Bowden built Florida State almost exclusively on the road (Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, etc.).
