I was ashamed after that game. I can deal with 6 picks, at least we are trying to throw the ball. I can deal with massive fumbles, at least we are trying to move the ball down the field. But 4/9 passes for 50 yards from Bates, that is sad, our offense consisted of run left, run right, run a draw. If the running game isn't working pass it. 6 or 7 interceptions and no running game, I can live with because at least we are trying out there. Personally, Frank needs to apologize for the loss, and how terrible the performance was; also Frank should promise us never to see a performance like that. I understand it was State, but you look at how we have done and you shake your head and wonder if this wasn't a huge step back.

I get the frustration after a tough outing like yesterday's.

I didn't see any quit in our guys, despite being outplayed and outcoached by the #2 ranked team in the country.

Below are some quotes from Coach Solich and OUr players participating in the postgame presser. They sound mature, accountable and focused on next week. I'm sticking with OUr guys.

OHIO POSTGAME QUOTES

Frank Solich, head coach
Opening Statement
"Well, it was a long afternoon. Ohio State has a championship caliber football team. I felt that coming in and I feel that coming out. We had to play perfect football, execute well, play penalty free and win the turnover battle, none of which got done today. The defense hung in there pretty well. Ohio State has a good running game, throwing game and a good scramble game. That's tough to defend against."

On having two games in a row with five turnovers
"Well it's been huge to a negative effect; normally we do a pretty good job of taking care of the ball. We need to have that corrected. You can't win football games when you turn the ball over to the other team. There are a lot of areas to get better at, and we're going to have to get better, no question."

On Phil Bates' performance
"It's a bit of a mixed review - this was a difficult game to come back in and play. He only had 16 snaps coming in. I don't think his true ability showed today. We've struggled at the quarterback position and we need to get that issue resolved."

Phil Bates, junior quarterback

On lack of offensive execution
"We weren't playing to the best of our abilities. We seemed tentative and hesitated. That's how the game rolled and that's what happens when we don't let it loose."

Noah Keller, senior linebacker
On the struggles defensively
"Our job is to go out and limit and stop the run. At first we did it but they started to pass it on their own will. They completed short routes and big plays. [Terrelle] Pryor got out of the pocket a lot and we can't let that happen. He's a hard guy to tackle. He has a deadly arm and a killer stiff arm. We will watch film and make corrections. We will put this behind us and prepare for Marshall next week."

On the defense forcing turnovers
"We stress three or more turnovers per game. Then we have to go after the ball. We can't do that if we blow assignments. We have to go back to the basics."

Donovan Fletcher, senior safety
On his two interceptions and overall defense
"That's just playing football. They are a very disciplined team. They executed on their plays and we need to execute better on ours. We're going to focus on Marshall now. We have a lot of corrections to be made. That's how the game is played."

Overall thoughts on the game
"We had a lot of problems. We didn't execute plays, hit people when they were open or get key blocks. We have a lot of work to do and we'll be back next week. We missed assignments and everyone wasn't doing the right things."

I am not satisfied with Frank's comments. I want an answer for what was only 10 passes. Frank explain why you need to run the ball every down, all the time, even when it isn't working!

I can answer that one...

Did you see our passing game?

It's clear we simply did not start this season ready to throw the ball the way we'd like to. After last week, I was praying that Phil Bates would be healthy enough to play and play well, but now my only hope is that Boo is starting to get into a groove. There were signs of life.  Because if we continue to turn the ball over at the rate we have been, we are not winning more than 3 games.

Bert. This was not Ohio's final game, a MAC Championship game or a bowl game. There are quite a few games yet to play and strategically the approach needed to reflect that. I believe the coaches did exactly the right things. Given future battles already committed to, against OSU, totally outgunned, shorten the fight, conserve resources, minimise losses, protect the teams confidence and move on. Bert, give OSU your 6 picks and massive fumbles and OSU starts at least 10 drives with a short field. This results in a recordbook loss about which you would really have been clicking the keys. As it is Ohio goes into the Marshall game without major damage control from a 77-0 drubbing, which given your approach it easily could have been.

Uh...we turned it over 5 times yesterday (many in our own territory) playing conservatively, with under 30 yards of total offense at the half.  I don't think it could have gotten much worse had we opened it up a little more.

Just because it didn't work doesn't mean it wasn't a reasonable plan. After watching the offense against a Toledo defense that I don't think was that great, this result did not surprise me. It might not have gotten worse with another plan, but it might not have gotten better, either.

I agree with that.  Until this coaching staff can figure out a way to consistently develop All-MAC level talent at the offensive line, RB, and QB positions, the offense will struggle.  The fact that the coaching staff has been unable to do so in six years now is quite troubling.

My problem is with playing conservative when you are down that far, when something isn't working try something else. It looked to me that Frank (or Tim, whoever is the Offensive play caller) was hell bent on running the ball if it worked or not. Screen passes, deep routes, I mean seriously give me something other than run left, run right, QB draw.

With that in mind, Our Offensive Line needs work, Taylor Price is badly missed, our defense could use some help, and we need to focus on not making turnovers. To me, I am very worried about facing Stupid Cow, but more so I want us to be prepared to win out in the MAC after this next week.

Flomo-genized, perhaps our perspectives are different. Given the state of Ohio football when coach Solich arrived I am quite pleased with the progress. There have been MAC championship games, a defense that led the country in turnovers, great special teams, Rodgers and Flading were 3rd team All MAC on the OL last year, QBs though not All MAC have been Ohio record setters, pre-season All-Americans, five or six highly rated recruits committed in September. I still believe the trend is upward. I am not troubled, yet.

Maybe it didn't show on TV.  But if you were there and couldn't see the tentativeness, the doubt, the lack of spirit from our offense then you are blind.  I attribute it to coaching that refused to take a legit shot at least twice on 3rd and 8 from about our own 10 yard line in the first half.  Instead, we decided to run Weakass Giveup Fetal Position Is That Really A Pump Fake Quarterback Draw into the heart of the buckeye defense for a yard.  We decided to not even fight.

It was a strong msg that we didn't have confidence in OUr guys.

I'd rather put up a gusto, gutsy effort than that lameness.

I can live with most of the turnovers.  But not the fear laden offensive plan and the MajorStupid deep and wide run guaranteed to produce a safety as it did.

I have confidence in OUr guys.  I think that we can rally.  Franshaw can bring back to crispness to the passing game.  OUr running game is world's more than the past few years.

A win..any win..over stupd cow this week will help a lot.

Given the hype that the staff came in with, the increased level of financial commitment from the university, and the state of the MAC East over the last 5 years, I'd say that the staff so far as met, but not exceeded, expectations.  And that's good.  But what I don't see is a program that is continuing to improve.  Rather, I see a program that is stagnant.  Specifically, while 2006 and 2009 were very nice seasons, 2007 was average, and 2008 was below average.  Meanwhile, 2010 appears to be shaping up to be average at best, and perhaps below average.

Call me crazy, but when we brought Solich in I expected to see us routinely placing OL and RBs on the first and second team All-MAC lists by now.  That's what it is going to take to consistently challenge for and win MAC championships.  To me the problem starts at the recruiting end.  We simply aren't getting the level of athlete we need on the offensive side of the ball to succeed at every position except WR.  Our offensive recruiting has been MAC average at best, and in my mind below MAC average, for 5 years now.  We haven't landed a single impact RB or QB under Solich, and the potential impact linemen we've signed have either transferred out or not developed as hoped.

The easiest comparison for me to make is to the basketball program.  Groce was able to immediately improve the level of athlete we were signing by a significant margin.   Our entire basketball recruiting classes are filled with guys that most MAC schools can't match.  In football, while we occassionally land a guy with a bottom-tier BCS offer, it is much more common that we lose guys to other MAC programs and have to rely on diamonds in the rough.  That simply isn't the level of recruiting that is necessary to elevate the program to the next level.

At the end of the day, my expectations for the football program are relatively low, so I'm fine with the job that Solich has done.  But I don't see this staff elevating the program much over the current level unless the offensive recruiting improves significantly.

So how many more years does Frank need to get the program rolling? Three? Five?

Please, define what you mean by rolling? I have been following college football for 30 plus years and I would call playing in the MAC championship game, bowl games, NFL players, pre-season All Americans, a defense that leads the nation in turnovers, record setting QBs, more and better recruits committing earlier rolling for Ohio. What do you need?

Which of those recruits have/will make us better at QB, RB & OL? Haven't seen any significant recruits at any of those positions.

Please stop saying there have not been impact QBs, I invite you to check the Ohio record book for the top QB stats to see who the record holders are. Please do not short change Chris Garrett, Chris was 1st team All MAC as a kick returner, he was in impact player at Ohio. Being the RB in Ohio's spread does not lead to 1st team RB. About your statement about recruiting improving, please check the recruiting tab, when have you ever seen suck recruits committed to Ohio in Sep?

Being the top QB in the Ohio record book doesn't make you an impact recruit.  We've been horrid for 40 years, so having one good statistical season during a 4-8 campaign doesn't mean that our QB recruiting overall has been above par.  It hasn't been.

Chris Garrett was a nice player, but not an impact player for the offense, which is what I'm talking about.  As for our recruiting, I don't see an appreciably higher level of recruit committing this year than what we've seen in recent years, although I haven't studied the players closely.  Even if we are attracting slightly better prospects this year, you have to keep in mid we've been in the middle to bottom half of the MAC in recruiting generally under Solich, so that improvement is still relative.

That's the thing. Solich took over a team so horrible, it is amazing to me that he's accomplished what he has so far. He and this team still have a long way to go, and hopefully we'll see continuing progress and better recruits with that.

That's the thing trolls and fair weather fans fail to grasp.

They forget how bad we were....or like some who casually follow sports forget some recent success and think we're the old Cats.

We're not your father's football Cats.

Flomo, you wish to argue about Ohio's recruiting and label it substandard yet you acknowledge you don't study it closely. Sir, I am going to leave yo to your opinions. I am enjoying this team this year, I have seen lots of hard work and know there are better times ahead as hard work is rewarded. Sometimes there are disappointments, but, these are good coaches that know how to coach and win.

Simple in a game like this, shorten the game by running the clock.   This can be the difference in a 60pt loss and a 30 pt loss.

Furthermore, it really can't be argued that Ohio State was the better team. You are more likely to get an upset with the worse team winning in a short game, so long as they don't turn it over, and do manage to get a few breaks, and do a few good things. Those didn't happen, but they could have.

For me the Toledo loss was far more disturbing than the OSU one.
Loosing a conference game at home only puts more pressure on winning road games.
After 3 games my concerns are;
OL, I thought the coaching staff stated we were in better shape this year.
QB situation was expected to be as good and perhaps better than last year. The talk from Frank about Bates was real positive.
More turnovers by the O this year than last.
The D has not performed to last years level, turnover wise.
The special teams is performing as good if not better than last year, particularly the punting game.

This week we travel to Marshall, who is favored by 5 1/2, and they are winless.
We should certainly have enough motivation for this game to be competitve.
