The average total offense ranking for Ohio during Frank's time here has been 92nd. If he had padded stats during those game when he honestly could have (and there haven't been many), that ranking maybe - maybe - would be about 90th. I'll be really, really generous and say maybe 85th, tops. We can blame lack of stat-padding all we want - if we wanted to kid ourselves - but the bottom line is that competent offenses simply do not rank that low.

I don't have time to look this up, but perhaps some others do. How have Ohio's offenses averaged compared to other MAC teams? That is probably a more valuable statistic that comparing them to all the FBS schools. My impression is that they are middle to upper-middle of the MAC, while their defenses have been the the top few over that time period, but it would be interesting to see how that compares to the actual data.

Ask and you shall receive L.C.

In 2005 we were 10th of 12 MAC schools in both total offense (i.e. yardage per game) and scoring offense (i.e. points per game).

In 2006 we were 10th of 12 in total offense, and 6th of 12 in scoring offense.

In 2007 we were 8th of 13 in total offense, and 4th of 13 in scoring offense.

In 2008 we were 8th of 13 in total offense, and 10th of 13 in scoring offense.

In 2009 we were 10th of 13 in total offense, and 6th of 13 in scoring offense.

(Stats all from http://mac-sports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9400&ATCLID=1180925)

So, overall, I would say that we have been decided below average in the MAC in offensive performance under Solich.  While a few years have seen better scoring output than would be expected from the yardage totals, I would guess that that has something to do with field position/turnovers created by the defense.

Nice summary, Flomo, and fast work. That pretty well summed it up, but since I'd already started compiling it this way:

Look at what Turner Gill did with Buffalo's offense. Very impressive.

Ohio doesn't even need to be excellent with the ball, we'd be fine if we were consistently average like Western Michigan has been.

We are pretty consistently way below average.

This Kool-Aid doesn't taste so good, and I don't think this thread is in the least bit inappropriate or premature. Props to Deciduous Forest Cat for having the cojones to start it.

Poor grades, poor behavior, homesickness, injuries and other forms of attrition are no excuse, either. The offensive line, running backs and quarterbacking shouldn't be this way. People are being paid big bucks to make things happen. Heck, people with run-of-the-mill and entry-level jobs have to make things happen.

Not calling for anything specific, just saying that as a fan base we seem a bit deluded and unable to focus or demand satisfaction. Witness the 12 pages of posts about Rufus and Brutus as the season floats in the crapper (not saying it can't get turned around).

Despite the common attitude that Ohio football was always completely pathetic before Solich got here, it's not true. In the mid-1990s under Grobe the team was just as good if not better than it has been the past few years. Those teams always came ready to play. Now, for the alert fan, it's a little bit like standing in a Soviet bread line underneath a huge mural of Lenin. Reality does not match hype.

I think Ohio's offense is going to be alright this season.  I'm more worried about losing the best MLB in the MAC.

Grabbing Putnam's cogent thought about OUr teams being ready to play and combining it with my anger at how our offense played scared for much of last Saturday:  I heard a great interview of Chad Brown, former pro linebacker, today on Dan Patrick's show.  Brown is a very smart, well-spoken guy.  The topic was concussions.

Brown's tale's of his concussions were frightening and gripping.  In explaining why players' initial reaction is often to want to immediately go back in the game and the approach which players must take to be game ready (which leads to that 'wanna go back in' mentality) he noted that players need to feel 'like supermen.'  They need to go out on the field with the feeling of invincibility.

Seems very clear to me that OUr coaches had OUr offense in about the opposite of that mindset when they took the field last Saturday.

Unacceptable.

Generally in the Solich era, the mental approach of OUr plaeyrs has been totally solid.  Generally, OUr lads have played with confidence and spirit.

But the strategy and play-calling which we've seen has been too often average.  We seem to bring much better strategy after stinker games.  The problem is that we keep having stinker games.
