Didn't Rufus say in one of his interviews that some of the cheerleaders knew about his plan beforehand?  I'm guessing that that would be the link warranting the suspension in the eyes of the administration, not that I agree with the decision.

Some sort of punishment was going to come out of this occurrence. What should have been the appropriate punishment?

Maybe firing the person who should have been on top of checking whether or not everyone associated is a student.

I'm sure one of the insiders here knows the answer to your suggestion. Some sort of punishment was inevitable though related to athletics. I'm also guessing that we could be mascot-less the next time we play in Ohio Stadium, whenever that may be.

Why stop at the cheerleaders that have nothing to do with it.  Disband the O-Zone because they help get fans so involved.

Heck, we should just shut down the university while we're at it since having a mascot requires having a school to cheer for to begin with.

Let's take the dramatics a step further and just keep the fans out. Games behind closed doors.

Rufus technically is a part of the cheerleading squad. He is managed by the head of the cheerleading team.  It's certainly conceivable that the person overseeing the cheerleaders has been "suspended" because he/she knew the kid was no longer a student.  And if you suspend the head of the cheerleaders, the rest pay the price too.  Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

SBH, Rufus is a marketing thing -- he would actually have more relationship to the O Zone than the cheerleaders.

As far as checking on his enrollment status, from what I can see he was enrolled in the spring, and during the first two weeks of the quarter, registration and such is a cluster -- no way to get a clear answer on whether someone is here or not.

The real solution is obvious.  Stop feeding Rufus whatever it is that turns his eyes that unsettling yellow and fuels his aggressive behavior and give him some of what Ol' Stoney the true Bobcat had.  No one got suspended when Stoney took down a rival mascot because he was just so d%$# cool about it.

I preferred the old mascot anyway. Rufus looks more like Cougar than a Bobcat. Bobcat's don't have that long nose.

False.  Geez, how many times do we have to say it?

Rufus is managed by the marketing department.

Rufus does not have anything to do with the cheerleaders.

yeah, but what if a cheerleader was pregnant with a Rufus lovechild? Or vice versa?

I can confirmed, from a reliable but must remain unnamed source, that the cheerleaders are serving a two-game suspension for the "Rufus Incident."  I also learned, via this same source, that they were considering sending the 110 to Marshall until the Brutus-Rufus scuffle.  Someone with a supposed band connection posted earlier in this thread that the 110 never planned on going.  This may be true, as my source is more in a position to know what was happening with the cheerleaders than with the 110.

They should be handing him kickbacks for the increased number of applications that have already come in after a week of nationwide publication of the incident.

Seriously, when did we as a school, hell, we as a NATION become so uptight? If we continue in this direction, prohibition will be back and we can watch a real-life Boardwalk Empire outside or doorsteps. If this had happened in 1965 everyone would have laughed and gotten back to enjoying life.

People used to smoke and drink in class and that generation's college students became today's greatest thinkers. Now I get in trouble for using a curse word while discussing Cohen v. California which is as close to pure irony as I think exists.

The 110 was never going to Marshall.  In fact, it was Marshall's Band Day, so the 110 would not have performed at halftime, so it was decided months ago the band would not go to Marshall.

Just like the Lincoln Conspiracy OCF they were no doubt co-conspirators.

On one of my flyovers in the Solich Soarer I can recall the cheerleaders drawing in the dirt where to attack Brutus first and then if that failed the final endzone attack.

Well, Doc, as tantalizing as the Lincoln conspiracy parallel is, I have to report that my source claims that this was more like the lone gunman of the Kennedy assassination.  BTW, I'm now reading a most interesting book, "Blood on the Moon," which has very interesting and convincing evidence that Booth recruited elements of the Confederate Secret Service into his earlier kidnap plan.  I haven't yet got to the part about the assassination plot, but he appears to be building a case for CSS involvement, at least, in planning an escape route, which if Booth hadn't injured himself in the leap to the stage might have succeeded in getting him safely out of the reach of the U.S. Army.  This, of course, if correct, greatly increases the number of players in the known conspiracy; most of those were hanged, as you know.  Now, I'm trying to figure out a way to bring this tangent back to the cheerleaders or Ohio football.  Ah, I've got it Oxford Tech is a conspiracy against all things decent, noble and true.  That whole institution is a conspiracy to bring suckiness to the rest of the nation and the only things standing between utter defeat at the hands of this massive conspiracy are the Ohio Bobcats and their cheerleaders.  Slamming the Redchickens is always an easy way out of any dilemma.

Given our recent fortunes on the field and the prospects relating to funding cuts that could put our programs in the proverbial throne room, how about a campaign to change our mascot to ... Mr. Hankey?!

No Rufus or cheerleaders again.  What does it mean to "keep the focus of the game on the field?"  Were they afraid that since both Marshall and Eastern are TV games that the announcers might reference the "incident" or show footage of it?  Strange days indeed.
