Offensively I thought we were OK last year.......this year 3 returning STARTING lineman......a new center who was supposedly adequate....and one position to be filled by possibly 2 seniors and a junior....all 3 who no longer are on the team because of injuries.
Yeah I counted on Ashley and Harden as RB's.....my bad.
I watched the spring game....Bates looked like he could throw and I guess I didn't pay attention to the severity of Jackson's injury.
But Jackson holds Ohio records in passing.....Brazil was touted as a pre-season All American....McCrae was a TD redzone machine last year.
How could you not have decent expectations......no one predicted an undefeated season (well some did)....but hardly anyone predicted a Knorr Year.
I thought there would be improvement. Injuries happen, you need depth to counter it. It still puzzles me how are in year 6 and haven't seen the depth that seemed to be a given.
I never had confidence in the RB depth. Losing Harden was going to make the first 5 games (I'm not counting Wofford) battles. Way too many question marks surrounded Ashley that it didn't surprise me that he didn't pan out. Still waiting for a Kalvin McCrae (intentional misspelling for the sharks) to step onto campus.
Bates was always a question mark with me too. You can never put too much into spring games. There are always guys who look like Heismans during those scrimmages and never make it happen during the regular season. Bates position needs to RB or WR. It will be interesting to see if the staff can sell him on making that move because I don't see him being our guy at QB.
It is true that Jackson holds records. Didn't Brad Bower set some records too? Or come close to? Jackson also set those marks during a 4-8 season. He's now coming back from an injury that has a direct impact on his ability to throw. Brazil is a talented player. Key terminology with that All American designation is PRE-SEASON. Those accolades are pretty much along the lines of Spring Game awards. McRae (still messing with the sharks) is solid, he also had Theo throwing to him last year who I would argue was and is a better fit than Jackson.
In terms of expectations, I just think posters as a majority overlooked too many unknowns when predicting the season. I thought I was pretty fair with my 7-5 prediction. The Eastern game is going to be the true indicator of what happens the rest of the year. If we can win that game, then 7 or 8 wins might still happen. If we lose, we can only hope that we can right the ship enough for 6 wins.
