It's too early to talk about who preforms on what level, but as a program what are your expectations for next season?

Winning season?  MAC East title?  etc etc.

At a minimum a MAC East title is warranted, there should also be a moderate expectation of a MAC title and/or Bowl game win.  But unlike others I am not going to be picky, we need to build a consistent program and winning at least a share of the MAC East should be the consistent borderline goal.  And doing that 3 years in a row would show that, the other two games are indicators for making the next step, which at the very least needs to happen after next season, though I kinda hope at least one of those two barriers we will finally breach next year.

Part of my reasoning also for not expecting more than the MAC East title is that we don't have a starting QB returning, I'm not saying we shouldn't expect someone to show up next year, but as OHIO's past has shown nothing is a given.

I'm worried about QB and keeping our linemen healthy through the off season.  Losing 4 quality linemen to pre-season injuries was a huge setback last year.  Not getting my hopes up.

To expect even a MAC East title is a bit much. Who does Miami lose? What about Temple? Sure, we have a lot back, but I'm pretty sure they do, too. And in the West, Northern Illinois and Toledo seem to return a lot. One expectation I have is for the MAC to be at a higher level next year.

As for the Bobcats, I expect a winning season. I think we have a great shot at a MAC East title and even more. It's not even out of the question that we could run the table. But there are too many other good teamsand a few too many question marks to have great expectations.

I think it would be reasonable to expect Ohio to capture the East next season and to either win the MAC or a bowl as a desired objective. I expect Temple to drop off some with Golden gone and Miami has to come to Peden Stadium. I feel OK about the QB postiion with Bates, Tettleton Synder, Roeback, and Bell. Somebody is going to be able to step up and tandem with Bates in the backfield adequately. I feel good about the lines becaue of how hard they've been recruited at that position this season. Having Noah back on D is simply huge. My biggest concern is the running and return game that has really struggled since McRae and Garrett were on the same field together. We lose our best RB in Davidson and replace with ???. I know the staff has aigned 1 RB but the depth chart is totally open for a stud RB to come in and start right away and I can't understand why the staff hasn't signed one yet.

The defense will make us or break us next year. It's possible that we could have a dominate D if certain questions are answered correctly....like:

Will Keller and Moore return to their before injured big play ability?

Will the inside rotation that will probably include a true freshman in Antwan Crutcher be as good as last year or better?

Can the defensive ends with possibly some true freshman and a juco put some pressure on the opposing QB?

If we get a yes from these 3 then bet the farm.

Transfer Beau Blankenship from Iowa State may be better than advertised.

Stay tuned.

Normally I'd say you are right but wait until the full schedule is out. We might crossover with 2 weak MAC West opponents. 3 most difficult remaining opponents on the schedule (Miami, Marshall, Temple) are at home while Rutgers, NMSU, and FCS are very beatable. Anything less than 8 wins would be a step back in my opinion on that schedule for a coaching staff in its 7th season. We've shown signs of turning the corner the last 2 years to become a consistent winner and that has to continue.

If injuries and/or suspensions are kept at a minimum I expect nothing lkess than a MAC East Championship.  A Keller and and a Moore at the top of their ability level should insure nothing less. They are impact players that determine the flow of  games.

The offense should be better with Brazill and better RB depth and a better offensive line.

Somehow, we'll be okay at qb.  D-line is the question.  Sched's weak, though.

3 hallmarks:
Start off year strong and winning.
Some players are studs/have OUTSTANDING years (unlike not a single player last year).
Finish really strong getting a lot better every game.

Special teams will be strong.

I agree with the disruptive DLine theory.

Offensive line at times, Kent and Troy games was lousy with a capital L.  Letting a defender go untouched with a straight shot at the QB is unacceptable--even one time the whole season.  It is probably unrealistic but an entirely new offensive line at every position would look good to me as the coaches then think there is someone playing better--wouldn't it be great that a starter improved in the off season and still lost his position--that would mean an upgrade.  When the offensive line blocks well, against Miami, we kick the conference champs tails.  The running backs have to do their reads and pick up the blitzer and most QB's will look good with protection and holes opening.

LeVon back at WR will upgrade the speed at receiver and getting behind the defense will open up the underneath tight end, running back stuff.  When the corner and the safety have to play against LeVon burning them deep and a QB has time will find some wide open alternatives.  The play action adds to the ability of going long.  So it is mostly about the offensive line getting that crushing running attack going and passing when you see opportunity instead of need.

It's all easy on paper this time of year!

Prediction--a three loss regular season, Kent State being one of them, Miami not being one of them.  Gamblers know that three times in a row and you keep betting on the streak to continue and you'll lose only once but you might win for years.  Where if you bet against the streak every year, you might lose10-15 times in a row.  That's why I hope Toledo is not on the schedule.

We Don't Lose at Home should be drilled into heads, we need to Own Our Turf.

The time is now. anything less than a MAC East title, MAC Championship Win and a Bowl win, is going to be a failure to me,I'm tired of being teased,  the coming oh so close to these 3 things end in 2011. We're gonna have Bates, Tettleton and Snyder at QB, I look for Solich to use Tettleton and Snyder in passing downs and use Bates in the Wildcat and line him up at reciever. as he did last year. then you have Roback, so I think Solich will really mix it up at QB this year and keep teams guessing.  Boykin needs to get more carries, plain and simple. Bakari Bussy needs more playin time, kids got great hands and not afraid to go across the middle, he proved that last year.  I'm lookin for big things out of Tremayne Scott and and Carl Jones on the D line, to go along with Keller and Edwards at linebacker and flip a coin at the corners and safetys because we're loaded with talent there, this Defense should be outstanding.  We will have the best receiving core in the MAC,  Thompson at TE,   Brazill, Dunlop, Bussy, Foster and Dovell at wideout lots of speed at this position. O line Center will be the question mark IMO,  we have Skyler Allen at center i believe, Transfer John Prior should get some PT this season. then there's Herman, Carlotta, Flading , Flowers and Strum just to mention a few. Special teams should be good again this year, Brazill returning punts, Weller kicking FG's and PAT's, Hershey Punting.  All in all,  hope we can stay healthy and get the Monkey off our back and win it all this year, can't wait for Football to start.

I thought the weak O line play down the stretch againist Kent and Troy was mainly due to the inexperience of the line catching up to it after deluding the opposition for a while during the winning streak. The O line will be more mature next year so that will help. And again, our top 3 competitors in the East (Miami, Temple, Kent) all have new coaches to beak in while playing @ Peden Stadium.

Headline on my Yahoo local news was about Akron and their 2011 schedule.  They announced their opponents from the MAC West, home against Central and away against the other two directions.  Akron doesn't play BG in this schedule.

Has anyone heard who we play?

I guess if you've got Blankenship arriving along with Hammonds that would be okay if Bates also transfered to RB (with occassional QB plays mixed in). With Ohio now having Bates, Tettelton, Roback, Snyder, Bell and now Vick at QB Bates could move back to the RB slot. The depth chart then would be 1. Snyder, 2. Roback, 3. Tettleton with Vick or Bell receiving a redshirt. LaVon Brazil will be back next year to be part of some slot formations. That is a backfield I can live with along with Harden, Boykin and Brown. An improved OL will help the running game in turn benefit as well.

In my opinion, we have seen the program rise to new levels in the past several years and it is time to expect the program to move to yet another level.

MAC East would be ok, winning the MAC would be more like it and definitely being competitive in a bowl game against a quality opponent should be the expectation.

Ohio should be looking at winning against Rutgers and Marshall, winning a bowl, and wining the East and MAC. Going 8-5 or less without some of these accomplishments is not showing progress.

New QB and an all new DL means the OL and special teams will need to really step up until the QB and DL get settled. Most conference championship teams win with returning QBs and dominant lines. Heres hoping Bates plays like a returning starter and Burrow/Germano can find some mean DT/DEs. I will reserve all expectations until I see how the OL/DLs come out this fall.

I repeat:  Dominators.  You cannot be very good unless you have a handful (or more!) of guys who are so good that they get national recognition and talk of pro potential is not far-fetched.  None from last year.  See the prior year (All-American mentions, etc).  The lads (Keller, Moore, Brazill, Carlotta, etc) who previously played a lot but played little this year will make a marked difference.

If we have 10 wins, I'll consider this season to be a good one.  9 is my expectation.  3-1 is attainable for our non-con, but even our BCS game Rutgers wouldn't be a huge stretch of the imagination.  OUr primary rivals, Temple and the team that knocked us out of the MAC title game are at home this year.  Akron, Beefalo, and BGSU are on the road, but they are winnable if we play well.

Bowl game?  Who knows, but I agree with said statements that the time is now for a signature win for Frank.

The loses from the defensive line and secondary are a concern.  QB and running back also a concern.  We also lost some depth a receiver  too.  That would a first glace think we are heading for a rebuilding year.  But this is the MAC East where Kent State, Miami, and Temple all lost their head coaches and BGSU, UB,  and Akron are coming off down years.  Ohio has stability on the sidelines with Solich which is critical.  The question is how hungry this team is after the poor bowl performance and blowing the east title with that loss at Kent St.  I would guess the returning players will have a sour taste in their mouths and come back with some swagger and something to prove.

Cutting off oubobcatjon there on purpose.  I like all the optimism, trust me.  But....  Lots of holes....  I guess every team has them.  But questions at QB and RB and the whole starting D line graduating leaves some big things to reload.

Some years ago I predicted a cycle of power that would have Ohio peaking in 2011-2012, and that, with a favorable schedule in 2011, Ohio would be undefeated. DL will reload, not rebuild. Offensive line returns in its entirety. Receivers, LB, DBs are all solid. RB is not something that concerns me at all. Therefore, the only question mark to me is QB. Because of the strength of the team around him, I'm not looking for a QB to carry the team on his back, but rather someone that can put in a solid, AE-like performance. If someone can emerge at QB that can be a leader, and that can put in a solid, reliable, relatively mistake-free year, and if the players all work hard in the off-season, I have no reason to change that prediction. Therefore, I continue to expect an undefeated regular season in 2011. BTW, I don't care what Miami or Temple has coming back - this will be a year for Ohio to win, not a year for the other teams to lose.

Remember - Now is the time of year when the success of next season will be determined. If the players are working hard in the off season, it will be a great year. If they are partying and getting in bar fights, not so much. Let's wait and see how it pans out, but I have great hopes.
