I am stunned.  I figured Golden would make a Grobe type move.  End up getting paid big at a second tier school in a big conference.  Somehwere like Vanderbuilt or Kentucky or Indiana and etc.

Then again, maybe that's exactly what just happened.....

The State of Florida is ripe for recruiting raiding right now.  Any head coach in that state impress you?

Exactly...He did make a move to a lower tier school.  Shalala (President) has made it known that she prioritizes a clean program but that she expects them to compete.  We all know that's a virtually impossible task at that level.  IMHO she chucked Randy under the bus even though he gave her exactly what she asked for.   I'm certainly not saying he deserved better considering Temple's stellar record against teams with winning records but he should have taken the Pitt job.  He'll go on beating Virginia, Duke and Maryland and losing all the meaningful games and Shalala will make him the sacrificial lamb eventually as well.

The real winners here are Mack Brown and the Longhorns...They'll sign Shannon as D Coor and if they can find a big name O Coor, keep that #1 ranked recruiting class...

So who coaches Temple's bowl game?  Oh wait, never mind.

What about Miami's?

The guy did a great job at Temple, do we forget that Temple was one of the worse teams in the Nation over a long period of time?  Sure under his guidence Temple has not won any "big games" but what have we won in the same time frame?  One poster ask for Golden's record against Bowl Teams, what is ours?  It is a tad better but not much....Since we have we become a program that was racking up wins who could afford to look down at others?

Both coaches took over 1-11 teams.  One coach has TWO Division Titles.  The other coach has ZERO.  Two > Zero

Actually Temple was 0-11 before Golden (2004, and was dropped from the Big East for lack of competitiveness), his first year was 1-11, and Frank without a doubt had way more talent to work with (not knocking the job Frank did in anyway).  The work that Golden did is comparable to what Grobe did here in the 90's, very very similar body of work.  In fact both Grobe and Golden inherited teams that would have the Nations longest losing streak.

Not sure how his body of work compares to Grobe or Frank.  Golden earned 750K at Temple taking over a former BCS budget program playing in state of the art facilities much like Pitt, Miami and other BCS schools.    He was by far the highest paid coach in the MAC and had resources available to him that most MAC coaches dream of.  They have hosted some big time programs at the Linc. I guess in terms of losing tradition they were similar.  Budget, facilities and media exposure...not so much.

Golden should be commended for turning around the losing culture at Temple. He made players and fans believe they would be successful even before they started winning games. Look no further than our good friend MH55 to the utter delusionment Temple fans now possess regarding their team. That's no easy feat.

However, the true savior of Temple football is not Al Golden, but the MAC. The top MAC teams are comparable with teams in the Big East, but the bottom MAC teams are the worst in the country. Those 4 or 5 really aweful conference games each year are the difference between Temple going 8-4 instead of 4-8. 4 of Temple's 8 wins came against MAC teams that finished with 8 wins, combined. That helps a lot, especially when you are 0-3 against the top MAC teams.

Golden has shown that he is a good recruiter and good at at getting people to buy in to what he wants to do. What he hasn't proven yet is an ability to win big games win it counts, Temple was out played and out coached when it mattered most, and that's a concern.

Al did a good job at Temple, but he's no Mike Haywood.

Maybe they are hoping they have the next Gene Chizik in Al Golden?  Hopefully someone is trolling the JuCo ranks to find a Cam Newton (on the field that is) type player to inflate his coaching abilities.

Happy for Golden at least......you gotta think he was within a few feet (heck inches) from the glass ceiling at Temple.  His biggest challenge is going to be establishing and maintaining momentum and consistency throughout the season.  One would think that if Temple brought the focus and intensity that allowed them to beat UConn early on into November that they very well may have been in Detroit (or at least not ended their season with back to back loses-one legit beatdown and one notascloseasthescoreboardsay game).

Maybe some of you should let AUBURN know how terrible of a hire Gene Chizik was because of his two losing seasons at IOWA STATE.

Gene Chizik has been a great  hire because he hired Gus Malzhan (sp?) and Cam Newton. If he didn't have them, would Auburb have had the season its had? I don't know, but I doubt it.

What if Wanny didn't have nearly 800 posts, 87.8% of which are critical/demeaning toward others posts/posters?

Now that works!!!

My son played travel soccer for one of the largest clubs in North Carolna.  In the Fall we would often play up a division (think of it as say, the Big East) competing against most of the other large soccer clubs in the Carolinas.  We would get killed.  Simply not competitive as a team.  In the Spring, we would be moved down a division to play against lower ranked teams and smaller clubs - and we would be quite competitive; often finishing at the top.  Nick was the same coach, with the same coaching acumen.

JCW, you are exactly correct. When he took over, Temple was absolutely horrible, comparable to this year's Akron team. Here are the Sagarin ratings for Temple starting the year before he was hired:
2005 44.51
2006 45.02
2007 52.67
2008 65.64
2009 69.14
2010 68.78

The only other MAC coaches with comparable records of steady improvement were Turner Gill and Jerry Kill, who both were hired by other schools, too.  Gill went 47.72, 46.63, 50.86,57.99, 67.88, and Kill went 53.45, 64.96, 69.53, 74.13.   Thus Golden improved Temple about 24 points, Gill improved Buffalo about 20 points, and Kill improved NIU 20 points. Using the same measure, Solich has improved Ohio about 13 points (so far). All four are good coaches.

I am not surprised in the least that Golden got a chance at a big name school, and I think he'll do fine. I'm also not surprised by the total lack of class by the Temple fans. Class fans would congratulate another school that hired their former coach while average fans would just drop it. Only truly low class fans would follow their former coach and bad mouth him.

I see that kents d-lineman Nix made freshmen All-American.

I still think it would have been nice if we had tried to block some of their defenders:

Miles Finch would've been a better hire for U of M.  That guy brings it.

Learning curve for Big Al, granted he only had two months to beg Shannon's guys to stay and grab a few others to fill in for those who split.
