I think it's interesting to speculate right now what will happen in August.  While it may be a tad premature, it's sooo much fun!

They don't get to field a team for a year or a couple.  See Southern Methodist University.

While I would love to see the "death penalty", I think they will get away with it just having slightly more penalties than USC.

Yes, nothing is as fun as your alma mater getting punished...

Hey, JSF, my MA-alma mater doesn't actually exist any more.  They abolished the OSU School of Journalism.

So you claim not to have a Master's degree? My friend has a degree in art therapy, a degree since discontinued. Does she no longer have an alma mater?

This rule only applies to schools with an enrollment of over 40,000 on one campus and who consider a man who received 30 yards in penalties in one game for unsportsmanlike conduct and later lost his job for punching out a player on the opposing team to be a football legend.

If there were a "Greater than USC, but slightly less than the death penalty." I would have gone with that.  Piney is wrong, this is going to be much bigger than the USC deal.

In other words, it's not hypocrisy if you do it.

Tend to agree here. The newest allegation of Pryor signing memorabilia for stacks of cash and not caring a lick about it kinda makes me think this will get a lot worse than it already is. I can't really blame the NCAA either if they bring the hammer down. They're hands are pretty much tied at this point. Someone is gonna have to be made an example of, and it looks like it's gonna be OSU.

Also, would not be surprised to see an NCAA Summit on the state of college football in the next year or so. This stuff is just getting waaaaaay outta hand.

Hypocrisy?  What's hypocritical here?  You dont like the fact that I root against a football team that represents the school where I got my master's degree.  I have two degrees from Ohio.  I was raised in Athens.  You may not like it, but to call my position hypocritical is, IMHO, way off base.

Webster's defines hypocrisy as:

"a feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not; especially: the false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion."

This post asks one interesting question, but not the only one. I wonder how the answer would differ if the question were asked, "What should they do" rather than what will they do.

The death penalty won't happen.  O$Who is too big of a TV draw and is too influential within the NCAA.  All the previous death penalty recipients were much smaller and had less going for them.  But O$Who should get a much stiffer penalty than U$C.  The Condoms' troubles basically centered around one player; the Big Bucks' issues are much more widespread.

The NCAA can't be that stupid to use a penalty....the death penalty...ever again.

SMU and their college football program was destroyed for 30 plus years.

Who won?

Did the NCAA spank SMU so they wouldn't do it again?

Give me a frikkin break.

Who are the NCAA rules people?

I think the death penalty should apply to the NCAA people.....there must be a better system of regulating college football.

I'm not sure what it would take for any major program to get the death penalty, but this would sure seem like as close to what it would take as you're likely to see. In the end, though, money talks, and I expect O$U to get a lot lighter penalty than they probably deserve.

It won't happen because it is not worthy of it. Is some of these allegations serious? Yes, however the majority of this can and will be dealt with on a less severe basis. And so far most of the serious stuff points right to the HC (which is rare, they are usually smart enough to have a bag man). If new material comes out that follows this through the entire organization than maybe, but right now it's just not there. Anyone else find it funny that no other coaches on staff are implicated in any of this?

I think the AD and the compliance people should go.

What is the job of the compliance people?

I thought it was that athletes didn't do stupid stuff that happened to be NCAA violations.

News flash....they didn't do it....should be a major enema for that department.

AD and compliance will go, just after this mess goes through the system. Who would take either of those jobs right now? The NCAA will come on campus and demand every phone record and e-mail and want it tomorrow, those guys will be working 16 hour days for months working through this. Let them do the dirty work and then let someone else clean up and rebuild. Compliance at the NCAA level is self reporting and relies on integrity and honesty (insert punch-line here). Take Ohio University, 400+ athletes and two compliances officers. There is no investigative team, it is more of an honor system. Shoe coma pies have more oversight on campus of these big schools than do the NCAA, and to me that is SAD!

You disapprove of those who do not support their school, correct? Like it or not, Ohio State is one of your schools. I'm sorry Woody Hayes was mean to you once. But just as I tell OU students that support the Buckeyes over us, when you enroll in a school, you get it all. It's great you have two OU degrees, and your support for Ohio is admirable. But you also have a degree from Ohio State, so rooting against them is wrong. You clearly don't have any issues rooting for more than one school, so you can't use that excuse. You don't have to root for the more than Ohio (that's ultimately up to each person), but there's no basis for being against them. You're one of them.

This goes deeper than the fact the Woody Hayes once threw a microphone in my face.  You tell me one other case where one state school tried to steal the name of another school in the same state, and I'll give a little credibility to your argument.  The other fact you seem to overlook is that most people have a lot more allegiance to their undergraduate school than their graduate schools.  When the graduate school steals the name of the undergraduate school it's not your normal B flat situation.  When I criticize folks for not being loyal to their schools, I'm talking about undergraduate students.  At OU-COM we have often had students who received undergraduate degrees from OSU, I always gave them a "pass" about wearing OSU gear in the halls of OU-COM  That's not like some doofus Ohio junior wearing an "Ohio State" shirt to BW3s to watch the red and off-white instead of attending an Ohio game.

This is WAY worse than USC. The USC situation was almost entirely about one player. Ohio State's is about a seemingly endless list of players that grows by the day. On top of that, it appears that the coach and upper administration were aware the whole time. THAT is perhaps the biggest news here.

While I'd love to see them get the death penalty, I think the NCAA will stop just short of that. However, they will have a significant bowl ban (5+ years) and likely lose more than USC's 30 scholarships. While not the death penalty, that will have some SERIOUS ramifications on the program. It will take a decade to recover, if not longer.
