I agree that it would be nice to have better quarterbacking.  Of the last three years of Boo and Theo, three years ago was best, two years ago 2nd best, and last year third best.

But I don't think our offense was particularly gimmicky compared to the norm in college football now.  Not at all.  It was geared to our talent and need, but I wouldn't call it 'gimmicky.'

And lack of qb play or a gimmicky offense is not the reason for lack of widespread fan excitment.  The reason that only we first-rank faithful are on board is that we haven't had a season yet in which we've won and won good from the start of the season.  I don't have the figures but I'll guess that we were no better than 6-6 in the first four games of the last three years.

Winning = arousal of the broad base of fans.

Qb will not be the problem.  We have sufficient talent there and the o-line will get us past early inexperience--as long as we don't turn it over much.  The key will be the d-line.  If they're good, we will be tough.

Monroe, you've said this on several threads but I just don't see how you can make that statement. If you can sleep at night with our current cast of characters then more power to you...but I am not nearly as comfortable. Lets break this down by each guy:

1.) Bates - Can't happen, won't happen. If Bates were to win the starting job my interest in the 2011 Cats would severely diminish. He simply lacks the poise and the accuracy to be a D1 QB. In fact, I think you could argue that he doesn't have the talent to even be a second or third string QB. He should have been moved to a different position long ago.

2.) Tettleton - We don't really know what he is capable of, however (as I mentioned earlier) he did not make much of his opportunities as a freshman.  That year he was 9-23 for 128 yards with 0 TDs and 2 INTS. At times he looked confused in the pocket and he would just tuck it and run if his first WR option wasn't available. He lacks size (5-11) but he does have the speed to take off and run.

3.) Snyder - Who knows? I have never seen the guy play outside of the recruiting videos where he looks competent but far from awe-inspiring. He also lacks height (6-0) but has a little speed.

4.) Vick - A true freshman with good size (6-3) and above average speed and the ability to make people miss. His arm looks OK but nothing incredible. He may be the best all-around athlete of the young guys. But of course, he is just out of high school and needs some time.

5.) Bell - Another true freshman that is a total mystery. His recruiting videos show a guy with great athleticism but odd throwing mechanics. He strikes me as being very raw and needs at least a year or two to develop. But who knows? He could become a great one given some time.

I'm sorry but none of these guys are a sure deal. And we may have a good offensive line but we certainly don't have a game-breaking type back that we can count on to consistently take the heat off the QB. The fact is, unless we have solid production from the QB, we'll see frequent 3 and outs which will put a lot of pressure on a defense that lacks depth.

Paul--We'll see.  It will be interesting..not boring.

I think your criticism of Tetts play as a freshmen may be accurate for how he played then.  But that was two years ago and, apparently many snaps with the first liners ago.  I imagine that he's a different guy now.

Not to mention that many of the plays he was brought in for were clearly designed runs...

For the record I'm still not convinced Bate's can't win the spot given the chance (and assuming he's matured).  Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a 3/4 year starter take the postion but Bates has a really good arm to go along with his size / speed.  He has made a few bad decisions but isn't that how you learn?  My concerns with him are vision and leadership...

Regarding Bates, I keep reminding myself that he was playing with a bad shoulder last year, which was supposedly corrected in the off-season. How much of his throwing problem was related to the injury? I don't have a clue, but I'm not willing to write him off just yet.

It strikes me that there are a lot of options here. Any one of them could turn out to be the answer, the the only problem is if none of them work out.

One essential to be a successful QB for the Cats lately has been escapability. Theo and Boo were pretty good a keeping plays alive. Bates has not been as good as you would expect given his speed and athleticism.
In Tettletons freshman year he had little poise in the pocket and always would tuck it and drop under pressure. Maybe he will be better with maturity and experience.
So I say that whoever has the most poise and escapability will see a lot of time at QB this year.

His Senior film was more concentrated on big plays (arm strength vastly improved from Jr to Sr) but his Junior year film showcases a good deal of escapablility...

Nice find! He definitely has the escapability covered :) His throwing motion and arm strength (and perhaps size) may be what scared away other schools. The way he holds the ball in his hand is kinda weird. Regardless, it is going to be fun to see who emerges from the 5-way battle.

Agree...Like I said though, you can immediately see improvement in arm strength from Junior to Senior film.  I'm with you...I don't think Spring ball was any indication of the level of competition we'll see in a few days between all 5 of them.

With Brazill, Dunlop, Foster, Robak, Thompson and possibly Bates out there to throw to...The possibilities are promising to say the least...

Speaking of the receiving corps...Does anyone know if N'Goumou dressed for the Spring Game?  I'm really excited about his potential...

If we could ever have a real, classic QB that can deliver the ball (in the air, mind you) and lead an exciting aerial assault, you will see attendance go up. Sports are suppose to be entertaining. Aerial assaults like the ones seen on national TV are entertaining. Trying to get people excited about Ohio football with this mundane, craptacular offense is like getting them excited about church. Sit down, evangelicals. I don't want to hear how your snake handling congregation is pumped about Sundays...

I would have to say that QB has to be one of the most difficult positions to recruit. Its a tough mentally demanding position and many a great high school player cannot adjust to play at the college level. That being said I have to at least give Frank credit for trying to recruit the QB position harder than his predecessors and keeping more QBs on scholarship to build depth.
