I admit I am not real confident in how good our QB play will be in the first half of the season. There seems to be talent and some depth but experience is lacking. Which QB on the roster can rise up the depth chart and be the on field leader we need? How do you see the QB situation unfolding?

Would Ohio Fans be satisfied with a QB who put up these 1995 passing stats?

Touchdown Tommy Frazier led his Huskers to 2 consecutive National Championships and is considered the back-up to Sammy Baugh on the all-century college football team with these less than Flutie results.  Many of the TD passes came from the team's running threat and that Frazier was never sacked.  To be successful at Ohio this fall the QB needs to have/make these fundamental things occur:  OL superiority, don't give the opponent TO's and hit the wide open receiver while making decent decisions.  Nothing heroic with the arm will be required if the running game rolls.  Does Ohio have a TD Tommy on the roster?

Hearing good things about Tettleton. I think Tettleton will be the starter and Frank will use Bate's like he did last year. Line Bate's up at multiple positions. Play Tettleton and Bates together. Thats what I think will happen. With the No-Huddle Offense added this year, I think the No-Huddle Offense suits Tettleton better. But you have to find a place for Bate's because he is a playmaker. Gonna be interesting season. can't wait for it to start.

If memory serves me corectly last years QB's accounted for 20 TO's. If we are able to reduce that number in half we give ourselves more offensive plays and more scoring opportunites, not to mention the momentum effect a turnover has on both teams.

Plus, there was a big dropoff in takeaways by the defense and returns on special teams last year, which meant that the offense generally found itself with a longer field and thus having to run more plays.  A lot of this should be improved this season with Moore and Keller back on D and Brazill back for kick returns.

I'm with Gman. This is what I expect. It seemed like Tettleton had an edge on Snyder in the spring. Bates didn't get a shot in the spring because of surgery and that probably will hurt any chance he had of actually being the starting QB. I do think they'll try to find even more ways (probably some at running back and increased time at receiver) to get Bates on the field and hopefully he'll be a diversion more often that can let other guys make some plays.

The other thing that made Frazier a cut above was that he played his best in close games. Ohio has seem some of that, too. I remember AE having the game of his life in a critical game against NIU, for example.

I completely agree with your premise, though. The strength of this team will be the oline. Behind that line, the QB needs to just make decent decisions, and hit open receivers, and it will be a good season. If one of the QBs also can play his best in critical situations, that will turn a good season into a great one.

I would be very surprised if Tettleton wasn't QB1.

Now I don't want to disparage anyone on our team, but Tettleton and Synder are very very average D1 QBs. I just don't see them offering anything different than New Mexico State or even Gardner Webb have to offer. I would love to see Derrius Vick start behind center (granted this is sight unseen). He's taller and more athletic than the two vying for the spot right now. He has the highest glass ceiling on the depth chart. We have a great recieving core, one of our best (the best?) offense lines ever, and the easiest schedule in college football (opening with the two easiest of those games). If there was ever a time to start the freshman quarterback game one in the history of Bobcat football, THIS IS IT. Do it Frank; I know you aren't afraid to take risks!

I couldn't agree more with you in saying that I would love to see Vick get some playing time and experience this year, Having said that, I don't think that Solich does it.  I believe that Tettleton will be QB1 for the opener against NMSU and will perform fairly decent this upcoming season.

I'm of the opinion that if we have a consistent running game versus the "now we have it, now we don't" stuff of the last couple of years we don't need a hero at the QB position.  We've got speed on the outside, options (no pun intended) under center and a line. I'm OK with rotating QB's for the sake of different looks.  Let's see some 100+ rushing games and the rest will be OK.

And as mentioned, a reduction in the number of unforced turnovers would be HUGE!

Nicely done! I'm willing to take a few losses if it means we have a 4 year starter behind center that can bring some consistency. It's what this program is missing.

Are you serious? Tettleton's old man hit 50 home runs on Fruitloops! Any one who can achieve that has to pass that knowledge down to his son.

I'm not willing to take loses.  We could win every game on OUr schedule this year.  That's not a year you take loses.

I think my comments were poorly stated. What I should have said was: if we are going to break in a new QB it might as well be the one that is going to take the field for the next 3 or 4 years. It would suck to spend the year with Tettleton or Snyder behind center just to replace him with someone else the following season. Because lets face it; whoever is the QB this season is going to have some serious ups and downs. No one is a sure bet.

I think based on Frank's time here, he will make an evaluation at the end of our fall practices, and determine who will start based on how they've practiced.  If their performance isn't up to snuff, they'll be replaced.  Simple.  With the pieces we have, I can truly say I have no idea who will be the one in a month.

I'd like a QB who doesn't make mistakes.  Tettleton and Snyder have been in the system so they SHOULD be able to run the O with limited miscues. If they can't then someone else might get a shot. Vick and Bell seem to be more athletic....but as my Latin teacher Granny Bender always said....experienta docet.

Based on my observations from the Spring game, I'd thought Snyder would be the starting QB.  However, after the game Frank said in an interview in one of the local rags that Tettelton had a superb outing, making it sound like he had the best day.  Shows my ability to gauge talent, I guess.  So maybe based on those observations, it'll be Vick.  In other words, I don't have the slightest idea who it'll be.  My guess is that at this juncture even Frank really doesn't have any idea who he will finally decide on.  I suspect that he'll let them all show their stuff and then make a choice based on how they do in fall camp.  I think, as of now, everyone is the running . . . Bates, Tettleton, Snyder, Vick and Bell.

The old option offense is a thing of the past, so please give me the guy who can actually throw the ball like a real quarterback should be able to (and not just bubble screens and dump offs).  Time for this offense to evolve a little and be able to move the ball downfield quickly.  Wasn't too impressed with how Bates threw based on limited opportunities I saw him last year.  Haven't seen Tettleton or Snyder throw at all besides some old high school clips. So who is the most natural and best passer on the team?
