It's an open and shut case.  All they have to do is watch Gordon Gee's performance at the infamous news conference.  When the President is concerned about being dismissed by the head football coach, how could there be any more conclusive evidence of a loss of control?

This guy calls for the "death penalty."

Key quote: "This will undoubtedly be considered a 'lack of institutional control' by the NCAA because of the length of time all of this has been going on. I personally feel the death penalty is warranted in this case due to the number of major violations that appear to have been committed."

Probably won't happen, but I do think the penalties are going to be greater than what was levied on USC.

Some Kentucky fans are rooting for the death penalty.  They are bitter about Enos Kanter not being ruled eligible at UK by the NCAA.  They think UK has been picked on over the years, and that if UK had done something like this it would be the death penalty for sure.

UK basketball fans, as a group, are the only fans I've ever met that are as delusional (if not moreso) than osu football fans. Unless the cars thing turns out to be as broad and deep (let's say 30+ players over the past 5 years, with school officials or boosters basically handing over the keys to the players with no questions asked) as feared/hoped (depending on your perspective), I just don't see the death penalty being invoked. If I had to bet, I'd say a combination of forfeited wins, scholarship losses (10+ for 3 years, at least), post-season bans, and TV bans will be what is handed out.

Has anyone seen a bookmaker giving odds on the punishment? I'm sure someone out there is.

the death penalty I agree will never take place. However if you look at what was handed down against smu it was a lot more then just not playing for a year. Is there the chance osu could lose their home games as smu did in the second year? Remember smu didn't play any games the second year by their own choice. Where is that d### band going to play their shows if that happens?

somehing else I just noticed. Although the death penalty has only been issued once in football it has come down 4 other times. Two of those times were against d1 basketball programs. Southwest Louisiana in the mid 70's for two years(thanks to bo lamar from columbus east high school) and believe it or not kentucky in the 52/53 season. Also two of the other penalties that smu received besides the death penalty were these. Loss of 55 recruits over four years and no outside recruiting allowed. Possible but not likely punishments for ohio state.

It would be much easier and clearer if the NCAA would just say:

You cheated once = this is what happens
You cheat twice = this is what happens
You cheat again = this is what happens
..........


At some point what difference does it make how many cars, tattoos etc?  They cheated and there is clear verifiable proof.  What else do they need?  What are they waiting for?  
 
This is a school that has already been striped of a final four banner.  They are generations away from any respect on a national level.  Good time to make a move and be the model program from Ohio.

I was reading about what happened to the Miami Hurricanes when the NCAA came down on them. Miami had a 31 scholarship reduction for a 3 year period. Let's just say playing with 54 scholarships will take a program out of National Championship contention for the period in question and probably for quite some time after that. It was easier for Miami to rebuild located in a top football hotbed. Ohio State wasn't the class of the Big Ten before Tressel (it was Michigan) and is looking at more competition with the Cornhuskers in the Big Ten and now a championship game it must play through so the road has become a lot tougher from many angles. Ohio State will try and go after a squeeky clean coach which could stall the return post penalties. They'll be fine recruiting in-state and pulling together winning seasons but it will affect them the most trying to land the national type recruits like Terrelle Prior. I could see a 5 year postseason ban for Ohio State and 30 scholarship reductions. Most of those guys lost will end up taking rides at Michigan and Penn State (now officially OSU's #2 rival because of divisional play).

Accoring to an ESPN report the NCAA has informed OSU will not be hit with institutional control, I guess Deep Pigskin gagged on that one.


Please read more carefully, BC.  Deep Pigskin said "USC-level sanctions."  The report above on possible loss of institutional control was attributed to a George Dohrmann; he is not "Deep Pigskin," whose identity cannot be revealed.

Actually, I've never "stated it."  I've quoted others who said it might happen.  Earlier in this thread I quoted one, and then added that I didn't think it was likely.

Yes, the fat lady is not quite ready to come out from behind the curtain.  The following interesting paragraph was in an AP story in today's Messenger:  "Also on Wednesday, ESPN.com cited numerous anonymous sources who said that the NCAA sent a letter to Ohio State last week notifying the school that its investigation is still ongoing.  The story said the letter could result in a second notice of allegations and a second trip through the NCAA justice system."

I suspect in a few weeks we are going to see some further "head rolling" at O$U.  They will probably try to stem the tide by doing another "self-report" and find another "fall guy."  Smith next?

For those of you who may have forgotten, read what Gordon Gee said about abolishing Vandy's athletic department in 2003.  Very insightful, appropriate and true.  Makes you wonder what they're serving in the A&M executive dining room that they didn't have in Nashville.
