It just would not be a good sign to not win this one decisively.

Everyone can see that.

When all these preseason mags are out along with the MAC writers assessments someone should summarize in one spread sheet showing where the MAC teams all picked to finish.

Interesting that the next 3 teams in the east after us all have new coaches. That's a major wild card in the whole race. We really don't know what to expect from Kent, Miami or Temple...

Losing to NMSU would be like losing to Marietta College.  While we've done that in the distant past, I don't think the 2011 Ohio Bobcats are going to go to sleep at NMSU.  That's the only way this one isn't a rout.  Comparing this game to Wyoming a few years ago is not appropriate.  Wyoming was a good football team and we had the disadvantage of having to play at a very high altitude without enough time to adjust to it physically.  NMSU is not a good football team, even by the standards of the lowly MAC, and while they may have attitude problem, we won't have an altitude problem.

Check out the CFN predictions.  The only week they are not predicted to lose is against Open Date.  This is one horrible football team.

I'M SORRY, WYOMING WAS NOT A GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM. THEY WERE 4-8 AND 1-7 IN THE MWC (ALTHOUGH THEY DID BEAT A WAEK TENNESSEE TEAM 13-7), BUT THEIR COACH GOT FIRED AFTER THE YEAR. THAT WAS CLEARLY A GAME OHIO SHOULD HAVE WON IMHO,BUT FOUND A WAY TO KEEP THEM CLOSE ENOUGH AT HOME FO RTHEM TO PULL IT OUT.

AND MARIETTA IS NOT THE SAME AS NMSU, I EXPECT IT TO BE A TUSSLE, FOR MANY OF THE VARIOUS REASONS WE OFTEN MAKE IT LOOK TOUGH AGAINST TEAMS WE, ON PAPER, SHOULD BEAT.

The comparison with Marietta College was a bit of hyperbole, which is a sin I'm prone to.  However, Wyoming was a respectable football team (maybe good was a stretch).  NMSU is not a respectable football team.  They are down right horrible.

For those too lazy to click on the link in my previous post.  Here's a cut and paste of College Football News' predictions for the New Mexico State University season:

That's a brutal schedule.  If that was Ohio's schedule, I might have close to the same number of W's!  I'm praying for a knock down, drag out W, I don't care what you guys say, Martin knows how to beat the 'Cats!

Coach Martin may know how to beat the Cats, but he's also had the personel to do so where it matters, and he's done that on the defensive side of the ball, where now he is on the offensive side where he's been horrible. NMSU has zero talent! This game will be name that tune.

One of the NCAA football prediction sites has New Mexico State going to a bowl game with 6 wins. I doubt that will happen but you can only be the bottom of the bottom feeders for so long.

All I know is that we supposedly have the "easiest" schedule in the nation, at least according to the so-called experts. Anything less than 2-2 in non-conference play will be a disaster. We really need to get 3 non-conference wins if this is going to be the season we all think it can.

Hello Bobcat fans!

NMSU Aggie football fan here from the Rivals.com web site, CrimsonIllustrated.com.  Just getting things ramped-up for the upcoming football season at my web site so please stop by and post on my message board(s).  I'd appreciate it!

Don't let the preseason college football magazines and rankings fool you about NMSU.  Yes, NMSU football doesn't send shivers down the spines of their opponents, but things are looking up in Las Cruces.  Coach DeWayne Walker (CDW) is slowly but surely building a solid football program and if not this year, maybe in a year or two more.  I know...I know..."Next year", right?

With all the analysis I've done between both teams and taking into account home field advantage for NMSU, this game will pretty much be a toss-up with a slight 1-point favorite going to NMSU.

NMSU will be starting sophomore QB, Andrew Manley.  He's a 3-star recruit out of Hawaii and comes to NMSU with some promise of delivering wins.  He needs time on the field and he'll get it this season.  Rifle arm, decent strength, and decent scrambling ability.  I think he was taken back by the speed of Div-I football last season, but I'm sure he's made up for it in the offseason and will be ready to go.

NMSU also has a new O.C. This will be NMSU's third O.C. in three years.  Now you know why so many publications have the Aggie ranked so low; new QB, O.C., WR's, Dline and Oline.

CDW went out and brought in some JUCO's on NLI day to help plug some holes on both sides of the ball, namely the linemen, LB's, and DB's.  Some impressive WR's are on roster as well (don't be fooled by their short heights).  Speedy, play makers, and have "football smarts" on the field.  If the Oline can give QB Manley some time to throw, ...WATCH OUT!  Big "IF".

As for the RB position, that's kind of tricky.  Kenny Turner hopes to have that break-out season he's been promising for two years now, hampered each previous year with knee injuries.  He came to NMSU as "damaged goods", but has healed up nicely.  In my opinion, he lacks proper fundamentals, but in the open field, he's a play maker.

NMSU and it's fans will be ready to welcome the Bobcats to Aggie Memorial Stadium on 9/3/11.  AMS seats 30,000 and even though it won't be a sold out game, I expect about 15,000-20,000 for that game.  Stadium parking is a breeze, cheap, and tailgating is decent.  Not what I would call SEC tailgating by any means, but it's a good time!

The Aggies will be ready.  They are so starved for a winner here in Las Cruces and NMSU that they're ready to explode!  We're talking NMSU hasn't been to a bowl game since 1960, the longest streak in Div-I football.  Four or five wins in a season is considered a miracle in these parts.  Six wins and eligibility for a bowl game, and Aggie fans will be besides themselves!  This place is ready to errupt in Aggie football madness!  51 years is too long to keep the lid on Aggie football.  And it all starts with the Ohio Bobcats on 9/3/11.

Good luck and here's to a good game with no major injuries on both sides!

Go Aggies!
Go Bobcats!

CI

PS: Stop by and post a "Howdy!" on my message board at www.crimsonillustrated.com.

http://insider.espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/6771865/cfb-ohio-bobcats-2011-preview

The Blue Ribbon preview is available on ESPN.com for those with Insider access. The Bobcats predicted to win the division, but only Flading and Weller named to the All-MAC first team. It has quotes from both coordinators that tell a little bit about where certain players are right now.

On the QB position: "We'll start off with a guy who's No. 1 one day, then the next day another guy will be No. 1," Albin said. He also said if he had to choose now, Tettleton would be the starter and it will be a three-man battle including Bates and Snyder.

The article names Harden the starting RB with Boykin the backup.

Albin calls both Brazill and Dunlop "60-catch guys" and says the offensive line's depth will allow them to rotate guys in and out often.

The starters on the D-line, even though this was written with Kozak in the mix, were named as Myers and Scott as ends and Jones and Huynh as the tackles, saying that Kozak would be used on pass rush situations. Burrow said the large class of incoming freshmen would get every chance to make their mark.

It said Wosely has an edge on Lewis for the other linebacker spot besides Keller and Benjamin.

DB starters were listed as Carrie and Leftwich as corners and safetys as Moore and Hughes. He'll have to grow up fast.

With that info how does that translate to wins and losses especially early in the season?  The QB position has to be settled quickly to give any team a chance.  Would you say there's a lot of pressure on the offense to perfom well early until the defense settles in with a lot of new starters?

If the OL is as advertised than to be a very good offense the QB will only need to do a couple of things well, he does not need to be great.  Eliminate giving the opponent a short field with fumbles, turnovers and drive stalling delay  penalties.  The QB will then need to be able to hit open receivers in the less than 18 yard range with a high level of accuracy or tuck it and run if the opening isn't there for that shorter pass.  A great QB would need to do that and also be accurate on long routes with #7 giving the Bobcats a deep threat which was missing in 2010.  But to be productive on this team the QB doesn't need to be a big time play maker, that would be icing on this dessert.

Think of the pressure the Bobcats(on paper) should be able to put on opponents.  An excellent punter and perhaps the best kicker east of the Mississippi who can regularly make them from anywhere resulting in points on the board or lousy field position for the opponent.  An OL that can give protection and open running lanes coupled with a potential Man Among Boys in the slot--Phil Bates.  How will  opponents game plan for him?  The Pistol is the Spread with  beefier running potential.  Do opponents spread another guy out to help with  Bates and leave the middle open for the running attack? PB in the slot, is he going to catch a short slant on a spread field or a quick pass with another receiver out their to block for him an it's one on one and he's gone?  Is PB put in motion and going to take a pitch? Is he going to cut it up, sweep with it or is he stepping back and chucking it? Think of the Miami game, 10 guys on the Deadskins defense went flocking towards PB only to see our running back talking to the Miami band in the end zone 70 yards down the field while the defense was trying to figure what PB was up to.  The tight end will have field days with the OL holding out the rush and the receivers and PB clearing out and then here comes a dump to the TE who gets to rumble into the midget secondary.

Charlie Coles said in BBall how difficult the Bobcats were to defend against with KV being able to step out and score and Tommy throwing in 3's while others could flash to the basket.  Well,  this football offense will be the equivalent of being a very tough challenge for the opponent.  PB is not some little scat back who can be brought down by an arm tackle.  Get him past the front guys with his speed and he'll be dreadful for those smaller DB's to have to handle that 230lb dynamo.  Additionally the opponent has to stop our run and all of these options and multiple looks and depth of personnel should give the majority of the 12 teams little sleep and lots of work going into the games.

Sorry if I'm too psyched by what can be on the offensive side.  It all rests on the OL, they must be much improved from years past where the QB had to run for his life and make big plays.  If the OL plays as the best unit in the MAC than all of the above will be possible, even with a non-super star QB.

Perhaps, but we have had a quarterback battle almost every year under Solich....

2010: Boo vs. Bates
2009: Boo vs. Theo
2008: Boo vs. Theo
2007: Theo vs. Bower
2006: Everson vs. Bower

Each year, though, one guy has emerged (whether by injury, performance, or some combination thereof). This year is no different, and I have confidence that the coaching staff can make it work. The good thing is that our schedule this season is easier than any of the years above.

As the scheme changes to a faster pace, the weight may be less critical.

Spring roster is nice....but of course doesn't include most of the true freshman and maybe some walk-ons.  The true freshman may need play a role this year.

I'm sure we'll get a fall roster at some point, but obviously not until after they report, and weigh in. It wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being a bit later than usual, with Jason leaving.
