I was at the game.  There was no doubt the whistle was coming from amidst the Marshall fans opposite the Ohio side.  The first time it was heard occurred when Ohio was on defense, and it did cause Ohio defenders to hesitate.  Subsequently it was heard - coming from the same location - a few more times.

Did it affect the game's outcome?  Not sure.  What I am sure of is that the loss can be attributed to Ohio's sleepwalking through the first one and a half quarters and falling behind 21-0.

What I find interesting is pondering the mentality of a fan who would bring a whistle to a game, intending to try to disrupt the opponent's defense.

Could it not have been a fan with an abnormally loud whistling ability? Why would the offense not stop as well if the whistle blew?

If everybody could hear the whistle it would disrupt the offense as well as the defense.

There is no way there would be any benefit to blowing a whistle at a football game. You would hurt your own team as well.

Having played a little football, I'm inclined to disagree with your closing observation.  Offensive players are accustomed to taking initiative.  Defensive players are accustomed to reacting.  At the first sound of a whistle, an initiating offensive player is more likely to continue his move.  A defensive player is more likely to stop reacting.

Then why are there frequently late hit penalties? That combined with the fact that officials have to lay on their whistles in order to stop the defensive players from driving a player backwards shows that defensive players tend to play through the whistle on a regular basis.

Except....What if you can buy WVU merchandise on the Home Depot website? That's real, because you can really buy it. But it's not real, because it's the internets. But...wait...huh? What just happened? My mind is sufficiently blown. I think I need to make a stop in Meigs County Saturday morning so I can contemplate this real versus non-real thing some more at the game. Maybe I'll join you guys at Chipotle afterwards.

I had a hard time deciphering your jargin, but I will just say, it wasn't people selling WVU merchandise, they were just flying WVU flags and no MU flags during game week... that's it.

But knowing that 80% of your students are fans of THE Ohio State... I'm sure you all have already lost your battle so you can't relate.

How bad does it suck knowing you all are "Ohio University" and "Ohio STATE" is known for the "O-H, I-O" chant, and their band for Script Ohio?

Does that cut deep that no one can call you all the University of the state?

At least schools like Miami, and BGSU can do their own thing.

The chant?  That's really some hard core smack there Cletus.

We have a different OHIO chant.....but of course you didn't know that.

Our chant is better.

You either don't hold a degree from Marshall (which makes you a perfect example of the double edged relationship of sidewalk Alumni) or you do hold a degree (which makes this, and some of your other childish posts, an embarrassment to your brethren).  Either way, it's clearly a waste of time reading them which is something I plan to rectify immediately...

Interesting that you chose to cite those two situations.  But before proceeding, let me point out that I used the word likely in my post.  Likely doesn't connote universality or unequivocalness.

Re late hits.  In my view, late hits often (not always) result not from failure to hear a whistle but from poor judgment - poor judgment resulting from being overly eager or overly hostile or overly immature.

Re officials blowing whistles to end defensive players from driving an offensive player backwards.  In that situation, experience tells me that all players - defensive and offensive - know the play is ended technically, and the defensive players are reluctant to stop an opportunity to create improved field position.

Security found the Marshall fan and escorted him, and his whistle, out of the stadium. As far as the benefits of blowing whistles at a football game? Maybe you are correct in assuming that it would negatively affect your own team as well. You have to give the guy a break on not picking that up though. He was, after all, educated at Marshall.

This must be how fans from and of Michigan feel when the entire state of Ohio goes off on them before "The (so-called) Game".  Yeah, Ohio wants to beat MU, just like UM wants to beat OSU, but for the love of God and despite what the other side thinks, the outcome won't alter course of history.

I believe that to be the fundamental difference here.  A large number of us don't feel this "rivalry" that is apparently so strong on the southern shore of the Ohio.  And, we're puzzled by the vitriol pouring from a few mouths.  I dare say of the 30 thousand or so OU grads in central Ohio, the largest contingent anywhere, only a minority could even tell you what state Marshall is in or that it bears any connection to Huntington, WV.

I'll bet they all know where Morgantown is, though.

That is the right fix but you brought back memories of a sub shop I worked at (it was dirty and greasy, so yea they were suckeye fans). This old women had the pic of the "pass interference" magnified and you could see the tip of the guys finger on the OSU player I laughed everyday.. then I quit when I wasn't allowed to wear my chad jersey on casual day..

Hey, morons:

This is not a message board. This is OUr message board. There is a world of difference between these two concepts. That means YOU, the visitors, are coming into OUR e-house. This means YOU, the visitors, agree to behave yourselves.

And if you don't like it, leave. You will not be missed. And no, it does not matter how you feel about this. Take your brainless, unimaginative so-called "smack talk" and take it back to Huntington where you can discuss how awesome you all are over a nice dish of deep-fried lard (mashed, for some of you).

Is it Miami week yet? Those people know how to banter.

Too bad Miami sucks at football.

You all are so funny.

When you get backed into a wall you just use insults and call people "stupid".

I remember when I was in elementary school and just called people names without making rational points.

Shut up and take your a** beating this week like good kitty.

When you demonstrate the ability to engage in rational discussion rather than inane trolling, we'll gladly make rational points. But it's Wednesday, and I don't know if 2 days is enough time for you to climb out of the stupid-hole you've dug yourself into.

But best of luck to you! I really hope you can make something of your life.

Better be careful using the OU..some of your fans get a little pissy about that...better change that to this is OHIOr message board.
