You all brought about 10 fans to The Joan....

Ooooh, burn! You successfully pointed out we know better than to visit your crappy campus!

I have been to games in Huntington and Morgantown and will never go back because of the vandalism to OUr cars and the poor hospitality by not only the fans, but also the State Police!

I can definitely believe that happened in Morgantown, but I just can't believe that this happened in Huntington.  What are the odds of you going to both cities and having your car vandalized both times?  Its just not believable.  Do OU fans like to travel to any away games?  I have never seen bad reports about the experience of visiting fans.

I had my car vandalized in Huntington at a hotel (air let out of two tires at night) and I know that one of our other posters on here had his car vandalized (Keyed) in Morgantown.

The taunting that I and my 70 year old father (at the time) received in a Huntington restaurant from a bunch of well dressed 50 year olds on 11/15/97 was uncalled for. My Dad and his best friend drove down from Columbus and I drove from Richmond to meet them for the game. We got beat badly by a better Marshall team (Pennington and Moss), but we were minding our own business trying to spend some time together and enjoy our steak dinner knowing I would probably not see my Dad for 6 months or so. Even more disappointing when Bob Pruett came in and joined in with their laughing and gestures towards us. I can't think of a single coach in the history of Ohio football who was as classless as Bob Pruett.

In Morgantown, it was constant F-Bombs from WVU fans and students everywhere I went whether I was in a Subway getting a sandwich, or walking to the game. When I asked a state trooper the direction of the public parking he told me quote "That is not my job to tell you". I guess they may have been since I had a small Ohio flag on my car. I then pulled up to private parking for $20. They said since I had an Ohio flag it was $40. I was jammed in and could not back up so I paid the $40. Then I park and there were some older Marshall fans next to me and I simply said hello and they stared at me like I was out of line to even say anything. Then I am walking to the game minding my own business and some frat boys started throwing objects from their balcony and I totally tried to ignore them and kept walking towards the stadium only to have three of them come out of the house and get in my face and challenge me to a fight. Then at the game you have WVU fans coming into the Ohio section at the end of the game to taunt me and a bunch of the players parents. I could go on and on, but it was like that the entire day.

I have traveled to other towns schools like Northwestern, NC State, ECU and Virginia Tech among others and never had a single instance where I felt unwelcome or threatened. Both WVU and Marshall stand out in my mind of places that I have no interest in visiting and spending my money in their local hotels and other businesses.

Marshall Alum 77 started a nice thread, but then you have a Jackass from your school get on here and post his crap which only reinforces my negative view of both schools and the West Virginia State Patrol.

I'm sorry you had those experiences.  The Morgantown stuff I can't help you with, but I promise I would put a stop to any of that stuff if I saw it happening to you in Huntington.

I honestly do not think OU will be able to run very effectively on our D-line.  I also question whether Marshall will be able to throw effectively on the OU defensive secondary.  What that leaves is OU trying to win with what I think you would agree is "plan B," the passing game.  Marshall will be left with trying to win with what I would call "plan B," the running game.  Who will execute Plan B?

This is a close game.  Special teams and turnovers will be big.  I like our special teams.  I think the only way it breaks open is if Marshall can get the ball over the top or OU can find a way to run the ball.  I don't see either happening.  I think it will be a low scoring, nasty sort of game.  Good luck.

I'm not concerned about OUr running game...We bring a stable for the first time in a long time...Beyond Harden even I see Beau having a big big game (this seems like an environment he'll thrive in) and we all know the effect  Boykin can have on a winded D in the 4th quarter...

If though you consider an experienced / talented / deep O Line; An accurate & mobile QB; Jordan Thompson, LaVon Brazill, Riley Dunlop and Donte Foster as "Plan B"...I'll take Plan B!

Catfan,
I'm pretty much in the position in reverse. My son was admitted to OU Med this spring. When he finishes my two adult children will own 5 degrees from OU. I always root for the cats when they aren't playing the Herd.

Interesting, I recently retired from OU-COM.  Perhaps I could met your son sometime and give him some "pointers" about life at the medical school.  Send me a private message (PM), if interested.  Also, my Marshall connection is that I was on the journalism faculty 1970-74.  I was the co-adviser of The Parthenon in the fall of 1970 when we lost our sports editor in the crash.  I'm currently working with the Marshall development folks to raise funds for a sports writing scholarship in his name.  The timing is excellent as they are just starting a sports writing sequence in the j-school.  If interested in making a donation, please let me know that in a PM, too.  This goes for any other Marshall fans on this board this week, too!

Go OHIO!

Go Marshall (except  this week)!

I am shocked at the stories I have heard about negative experiences at a Herd game.  I have never seen that at a Herd game and in my experience visiting fans enjoy their time in Huntington.  I would encourage you to give Huntington another chance next year.  We enjoy visiting fans coming to Huntington.

All of that said, perhaps we can salvage this thread.  I am looking forward to the Ohio offensive line v. the Marshall defensive line.  We have plenty of weaknesses on this team, but the defensive line is very very good.  I sincerely think they are an SEC quality defensive line.  Vinny Curry is the best DE Marshall has ever had in my opinion.  We have had some great ones, but Vinny is built like a classic DE.

2004, things were a lot different in the mid and late 90s than they are now. Herd fans have matured but have also been humbled a bit by the results of the last 5-6 years.

That being said let's get back on topic. Everything you think you know about Marshall's football team from what you've seen the last couple of years you can throw out. The talent level and depth across the board has increased. It's young talent and depth but even as freshman they're better than some of the skill players we've put out on the field since the pizza bowl. I'm interested to see if we have the ability to keep our intensity level high coming off a big win over division favorite Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles had 8 returning starters on O and 7 on defense from a team that beat us 41-16 last year.

The years following the Bob Pruett era have been characterized by severe ups and downs. No consistency.  I'm interested to see if we can maintain momentum.

I don't want to see a week of predominantly immature smack talk on this board.  That goes for both Marshall and Ohio fans.

We oughta be concentrating on a great game to come this Saturday between two pretty evenly matched teams rather than hurling insults at each other.

I know some OU fans have had bad experiences at Marshall, but I've been to many, many games there over the years and have never personally been mistreated.  Instead, I've been invited to join in with people tailgating, etc.

I agree Jeff and as I noted, I think the thread started by Marshall Alum 77 was great.  We have had many very nice posters from other schools such as the guy from Wyoming several years ago.  Hopefully we don't have any of OUr posters going to other boards like this other poster and our "friend from Temple".

There is absolutely no way you all had more than 100 fans there, I sat across from your visitor section and it was bone dry.

I think I heard accounts of seeing about 10 OU fans total.

I or someone with me has been physically threatened every time I've been to Huntington. Sorry, but our stories are not isolated incidents. It's a pattern.

I cannot wait for this game, should be awesome.

And for the record, my interactions with Herd fans typically are not pleasant either.

Good for you! I hope you feel better, I sincerely recommend that you acquire a good recipe for crow.

Athens is roughly 80 miles from Huntington, and OU had 10 fans (maybe 20 at the most) in your section.

MU is bringing 6,000+ this weekend. Enjoy.

I don't get the 100-fan talk.  I know there was half of a section of us there in the visiting section, plus a lot of folks scattered throughout the stadium.  I would guess 2,000 Bobcat fans were there.  I have no doubt there will be more Herd fans in Athens, but to say it was 100 is ridiculous.

I know Jeff has been going to Huntington for decades, but my experiences have been very mixed.  I will say that the type of behavior I see from the "bad" Herd fans is something I have never seen in Athens.  I am not talking about students.  I am referring to grown men, mullets and all.

Whoa whoa whoa.....I appreciate the spirit, but let's not get carried away here, what with blasphemy being an unforgiveable sin and all. I mean, couldn't we hope for a bench-clearing brawl immediately after kickoff, resulting in a 0-0 tie and so many suspensions for both teams that they have to forfeit their games against the Bobcats? That seems like the more ecumenical result.

Playing in Athens must be like the super bowl for Marshall fans. Nothing better than traveling to play a top tier MAC opponent in their own stadium coached by legend Frank Solich. Bobcats will travel 5,000 to the horseshoe to watch the team play Ohio State. A game at Marshall is just not a big deal to Bobcat fans.

Yeah, we really envy that Mid American Conference Swag..............................................................

Should Marco watch out for Rufus, or is he still in the pound?

Considering your lack of success lately, you should be envious of any kind of swag. Also, you don't know what a pound is if you think cats go there. And you should be afraid of Athens restaurants. They sometimes serve weird, unfried, healthy food.

My wife and I were at the Marshall game last year.  We were not in the Ohio section.  In fact, we were on the other side of the stadium, surrounded almost entirely by Marshall fans.  All were very friendly, even though we were clearly rooting for Ohio.  We had nice conversations with those around us on a number of topics, mostly football and college related. Also, on the way back to the car after the game, a nice Marshall fan started a conversation with me and made it a point to say what great potential he saw in our team and how well coached he thought Ohio was.  This is typical of my experiences attending Marshall games when wearing Ohio gear.

When I attend games there when they are playing someone else I wear a Marshall cap -- with a little green and white pin that says "RAM."  A real old time Marshall fan on this board might know what that stands for.

My only bad experience at Marshall game was a number of years ago -- at a NCAA 1-AA playoff game when we were right in front of some drunk students who were very loud and obnoxious.  We were, of course, rooting for Marshall, but nonetheless found their behavior upsetting.  I suspect we've had drunken students a time or two in Peden.

Caftan,
I would be happy to pm but not sure how to do it on this board. My wife and I end up in Athens for dinner on a regular basis. We really like Casa, the Village Bakery and Della Zona. Fun, quirky eateries abound in A Town.
