The OCF modified Mountain East scenario

North: Ohio, Miami, Toledo, Temple, Marshall, Delaware, JMU

South: FIU, MTSU, UAB, So. Miss., Troy,  Appy State, East Carolina

Does Toledo join without BG? That was my thought in including them in my list. If so, I like this layout (assuming ECU doesn't go Big East).

That's a good question.  My guess is if push came to shove they would.  However, maybe we add BG and then some other school to the South Division.  Maybe USF or UCF?

Oops . . . I just realized that I left out one of the schools specifically mentioned by the JMU president -- Old Dominion University, which apparently is planning to move up to FBS.  I guess they'd have to go in the Northern Division knocking out BG once again.  ODU is a real powerhouse in women's basketball.  I don't know much about their other sports.

Not as I understand it.  I believe it's all sports.

For my basketball friends:  Is this a two bid basketball conference?  Temple is a usual invite.  JMU has a Final Four appearance.  Looks like the South Division would be much weaker in hoops than the North Division.

Edit: The NCAA means a lot to the NCAA university presidents and to the Congress of the USA that supported efforts of President Teddy Roosevelt to create the NCAA in order to save football from being outlawed as too dangerous a sport.

I just can't see Temple joining this for men's basketball, for the same reasons they won't join the MAC in men's basketball.

James Madison has not had a Final Four appearance.

Not sure I agree that the South division would be weaker in hoops.

Also...Old Dominion could come into play here.  They are establishing a football program.  In a league such as this, I'd rather see them in than FIU for geographical reasons.

My bad: I was thinking of George Mason, not JMU.  GMU went to the Final Four in 2006.  Hey, I wonder if they are a candidate for this league.  Picky, picky, picky -- just one little letter "J" v. "G."

This new conference might be able to play hardball with Temple a little better than the MAC, who misplayed their hand in the original negotiations.  Now, I've been told that actually this conference would probably start without divisions and would include only seven or eight schools -- JMU, Delaware, Ohio, Marshall, Temple, Appy State, FIU and maybe East Carolina.  This would mean that all schools, including Temple, would have a large number of OOC games to schedule because there would be no cross-over games.  Personally, I don't think Ohio would move without Miami tagging along as our little brother.

Immediately put the screws to Temple or UMass (depending on whether or not the current FB only contract allows them to be leveraged) to come in for MBB at a minimum, or otherwise ask them to find a new home after the current contract expires.

It's an open-ended agreement with both schools.

Serious question: Assume that neither the Big East nor C-USA calls; what are Temple's options beyond the status quo?

Or say C-USA calls but says Temple has to bring all sports. Do you make the jump? Assume C-USA will be replacing Memphis and UCF, so the marquee basketball program in C-USA is gone.

As long as Xavier and Dayton are in the A-10 Temple is better off staying there.

According to Tom Penders Temple may be in trouble after all. All speculation of course.

@TomPenders Look 4 new, huge basketball conference! All private B.E. schools and a mix from A!). If U don't see this coming U R blind!

@TomPenders UMass, URI, St Joes, Xav., Dayton, DePaul, VCU, Richmond, GMU, Butler and the 6 private B. E. private schools [no ND]. America's Best Conf!

All I know is that I sincerely hope Schauss and McDavis are on the phones trying to make something happen and not just on standby while everything changes around us and we're left holding the bag.

Not really very relevant, but I had a conversation with a few Blue Hens players last year that balked at the idea of any MAC team being able to compete with them. They didn't think that even the top MAC teams (Ohio and Temple specifically mentioned) could compete with Delaware, Villanova, JMU, William and Mary, etc.

Obviously Temple proved that wrong this year when they pounded Villanova.

Do you speak for the Temple president, Board of Trustees (or whatever you call them) and the AD?  Or, are you the president in disguise?

I believe it was Lou Holtz who said there were "too many marys and not enough williams" at W & M. I like our chances against any 1-AA school.

Don't be offended, "]["emple cant take its BB Program to a conference that is mostly 350+ miles away against 11 teams  that we have absolutely no history with.

Late word this evening has "]["emple as a candidate with an expanded BE minus many of the catholic basketball schools...

First your math isn't very good.  How far do you think the teams in the BE are apart?  And, an expanded BE?  That conference appears to be imploding!

I wouldn't be surprised, IF (and that's a big if) the Big East survives, Temple and Memphis are two Universities that get a long hard look.  Memphis would have to improve their football program greatly, but the Big East is primarily a basketball conference and both of those teams would fit into that landscape fairly well.

Since we're discussing conference realignment, I was somewhat surprised this afternoon at work to see it cross the wires that Missouri has reportedly reached an informal agreement with the SEC (who denies it).  Another conference in need of a name change.

I've thought for years Missouri would've been a sensible add to the Big Ten -- this seems out of place to me.
