Looking forward to meeting you, Pete.

I'm only going to do the 1st quarter in the tower. I prefer to move among the riff raff in general seating to gauge the disgust

So what you're saying is I'm going to be the fly in the sugar bowl for the Temple game?

I think I'll be up there for the Temple game. There is nothing to fear.

I haven't experienced what SBH has in a few trips up there at all. Maybe his picture is still on the walls from the OFSIE sign buying days :) Free food, drinks, and gameday program, fun conversation, and no 'security' issue. Everyone was happy to see you. Fun time.

In fact I had almost the opposite experience. The first time, going in with my brother, we stood next to Mrs. McDavis & prez, chatted and watched most of the first quarter. After a while though, I asked her where the athletic department folks were, as I was supposed to be sitting with them. She laughed and said I was in the President's box, and the AD box was one over. But she told us to stay as long as we want.

The one thing I will say is that it is a bit sterile. And that's fine if you know what you're getting into. There's not a bunch of yelling, and if you know that going in, it's no big deal. Since we have a group with about 10 of us that get season tix, I never stay up there the whole game, but for anyone that gets the opportunity, I think it's fun and a good time.

I'm torn on this one.  I truly believe the administration sets things up to make it a nice environment for everyone.  I think Schaus and McDavis do everything they personally can to make you feel welcome when you are a guest of theirs.  The problem lies with the other guests.  The "regulars" are often crotchety and indifferent to your presence.  This doesn't just happen in Peden.  It happens in the Rohr Room, Mem Aud, Baker Center events, etc.  These are the same folks that get pissed if you accidentally sit in their pew at church or get seated next to them at Sunday Brunch at the country club when you have the audacity to bring children to the dining room.  I usually get mad at these folks because they seem to easily forget what it was like to be younger and new to that scene.  Then, I remind myself I'm 30 years younger than them and they'll all be dead soon anyway.

There has to be some sort of security procedure to make sure only invited guests are in there.  I'll bet in was someone that is very green, like a Sports Ad student providing that security.  I tend to cut them some slack.  They are learning the ropes and may have never been in a luxury box in their life.  I had no idea how to act the first time I was in one.

My guess is that is probably the case.  I have met President McDavis on several occasions including a meeting in his office and has been extremley nice and I believe he is always interested in others thoughts/ideas.

One person who was a tremendous loss for our athletic department was former associate athletic director Mark Wilson.  I met Mark the first time at an alumni meeting in Richmond and he could not have been  nicer.  No matter how large or small a donation I made, Mark always sent a handwritten thank you note to me.

It is kind of funny that I think security must be tighter to get up there than onto the field itself.  When I worked the Buffalo game for ESPNU in '08, I was bundled up in a sweatshirt and heavy coat (it was FREEZING).  I realized post-game that my pass was around my neck inside both of them.  Nobody once questioned me.

Our security is a joke, frankly. If I wanted to get onto the field, I have no doubt that I could do so easily. I believe all of the ushers are student volunteers, so they are not highly trained and/or motivated. In my limited interactions with our ushers, most could barely tell you who we were playing...let alone answer a more complicated question. Not knocking them (free labor is free labor), but you get what you pay for.

We have less security than some high school games. If there was ever some sort of "situation" at one of our games, I don't think anyone would know how to respond. While many things with Ohio Athletics have progressed over the last 20 years, I think our gameday staff/security have been stuck in the Bryant/Lichtenburg years. It's just a combination of students and townies that volunteer as ticket takers, ushers, etc. Truthfully, though, these folks are doing the best they can.
