Just got back from the game. I did not like the helmets--from the stands you couldn't make out the logo at all. I would have prefered the white helmets.

When I brought that up in my news editing class, I got laughed at by my professor (he told us that you never have to listen to what people want to be called).

Yes, this is the difference between news and PR. It's schizoid to teach both in Scripps. PR flacks can huff and puff, but nobody - least of all a decent reporter - is under any obligation to change inconsequential language that people are generally comfortable with.

If they give you a boner, you have my sympathy.

It was hard to pick up what was on the helmet until you got close.  Bottom line is the unis and helmets were AWESOME!  And I, too, am a traditionalist (back to 71).

I thought the "Black" helmets went much better with the uniforms than the white did in the Marshall game.  The white helmets clashed and kind of made the Marshall game look like we could not afford a special helment - made us look like a "MAC School", LOL.

The problem last night is that on TV from many angles, the helmets looked gray at times. The facemasks appeared to be a gloss so they did not blend with the shell.  It also appeared that the finished smudged more often.  I still stand by my original thought that a darker black with a gloss finish would have looked better and more consistant, and the logo/stripe would have probably been more vivid.

Bottom line it was a great game and a great turnout for a Wednesday game, despite many of the students leaving early.  I remember a couple of Miami weeknight games during the Knorr(ed) era where there was a really low turnout out which was sad considering one of the games was Senior night.  I think the athletic department should be commended for their efforts last night and creating a great atmosphere.

IMO that shiny black helmet looks cheap.

I thought the flat black was awesome. My son, who is 14 and HIGHLY influenced by uniform designs, loved the look, and called his buddies to tune in just to see it. You can't discount the fashion preferences of high-school aged boys. No doubt this helps Ohio's image in the recruiting wars.  As for the logo not showing up, I'm sure the same helmets could sport a white Ohio logo next time--all for the cost of a sticker.

Yeah I know the students loved them too, my co-workers daughter was even commenting on how sweet they were when she went to the game last night.

The Dispatch ran an article during the early season of HS football pointing out the "borrowed" logos, nicknames and fight songs.  Very entertaining reading.  There aren't a lot of truly original HS mascots out there.

Can anyone come up with a more truly original mascot and logo than that of Poca High School in Poca, West Virginia?  Wouldn't you have hated to have to go up against a team represented by that angry looking dot mascot?

I thought the black helmets were the finishing touches to an awesome black alternate uniform. Even those that don't like them have to like how the team plays in them.

As predicted the matte black did not hold up to a game's worth of friction

Got to see the DVR replay last night and the helmets looked a whole lot better on TV than they did in person, specifically the logo, which was impossible to see from the stands.  Still flat/matte black does not take the punishment that other finshes will.  The equipment staff better have a whole bunch of that stuff in a spray can.

322 yards is pretty decent mileage on a helmet decal if you ask me...

If anyone happens to know anyone who works at or has connections at the helmet facility in Elyria, it is well worth the opportunity to get a walk through. I have a few times and the process is very intersting. You would think the black matte is painted on, but I think it is actually a decal wrap that encompasses the shell, then the Ohio decal is applied. All those Oregon helmets are done the same way.

Remember in "Rudy" when they talk about flecks of gold on the helmets? I heard they added flecks of bituminous coal to these helmets.

I totally agree that something has to be done to make the OHIO logo show up better, but I did notice that they were trying to use the same color scheme as for the jersey lettering (green with white outline) when you see the helmet on together with the jerseys.

They may have to think how to redo the Ohio logo together with retooling the uniforms to match up the OHIO logo up properly with the jersey numbers. Another possibility would be making the green a lighter shade or adding glitter to the color so that stands out better for the OHIO logo because I really like how the green numbers look on the jerseys. Adding glitter might be a better option here if we want to keep our official hunter green school color.

Even if the black matte gets a few dings, is that so bad? A few battle scars show that the players, like Harden above, have been busy. I thought the uni looked awesome on TV, and clearly was better with the black matte helmets than the white ones.

I have talked to many from around the state since the game - OU alums and even more non OU or were not even that aware or that familiar with OU over the last couple days. The CONSENSUS is The Uni's and Helmets were either The Best or One Of The Best they have ever seen. The only grumbling about the matte finish on the helmets for some reason seems to be on here.

The OHIO was pretty easy to see I thought on TV. The OHIO that mattered more really though was the one in the scoreline on the screen............

Or they could do like that little football school up the road...Notre Dame is it?.... does and re spray paint the gold helmets before each game.

Notre Dame actually changed helmets for the USC game and the students will no longer paint the helmets, only routine maintenance.  The new helmet is on the left and will only be painted by the manufacturer.
