I know some think we should cut The Post writers unending slack because they're amateurs, but yesterday's article by Michael Stainbrook (who I think is their sports editor) had a ridiculous mistake.

He said Ohio had not won on the road against a BCS team since beating Minnesota in 2000.

Uh ... no ... we beat Kentucky in Lexington in 2004, and we beat Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 2006.

Not close, no cigar.

Same guy also said we haven't received votes in a poll in years (we did last year).  Not to mention almost every subscription number in their C-USA/MAC TV deal article was wrong.  My slack has become taut.

And as some have pointed out, all 1A (aka FBS) schools are "BCS" schools in that they have an opportunity to qualify for a BCS bowl through the computer rankings.  It's just that the "Big 6" conferences are automatic qualifiers and the rest of us aren't.  He should've referred to them as AQ.  Also, it appears they edited the story; the version that's up now mentions Illinois in '06.

The Posties' done fall off this year. The writing is very bad and there seems to be a lack of effort when compared to last seasons crew.

What happened to all those annoying Scripps overachievers?

They're moving to Columbus to be part of the Scripps School's news bureau:

I emailed the reporter right away about this error as soon as I saw it on Friday.  He said that I was the second do so.  He said he'd make a correction.  It sounded like he was just going to make the correction on the online version.  I wrote him back indicating that a correction needed to be made in Monday's paper.  We'll see what happens.

Am I the only one who thinks modifying an online version of an article with no indication that it has been changed is poor form for a publication?

I hate to pile on, especially because those kids don't get paid and are still learning. I just can't help but wonder if there's a more lax attitude about errors in the digital age. Back when I was a working journalist, errors were costly, embarrassing, and something one fact-checked, spell-checked and editing to hell to avoid. We still made mistakes, but they seemed less frequent. I remember teasing radio journalists, who'd often toss out "facts" easily and without much research. "Close enough for radio" was an insult in the newsrooms in which I worked. Maybe these days it's "close enough for the internet." They figure they'll change if a voluntary fact-checker (aka reader) tells me about it. I hope I'm wrong about that.

The inaccuracy in the article "Bobcats to put flawless record on the line against Scarlet Knights" was corrected days ago.

However, as this was his first time dealing with an online correction (and as he drove overnight to NJ) our sports editor did not initially append an editor's note disclosing that change. Once that was brought to our attention, an editor's note was immediately added. A correction will appear on page 3 of tomorrow's newspaper.

As for assertions of a lack of effort on behalf of our sports staff, those are absurd. Pick up the paper anyday and you'll see more coverage of more Ohio University sports than any other outlet on campus. Football has run on our front page everyday for more than a week and our sports editor's have worked above and beyond. Friday's paper included staff picks from Sports Illustrated's Peter King and ESPN's Jon Greenberg and previous weeks have included picks from former Bobcats currently in the NFL. We've posted more than 100 sports photos already, as well as podcasts, high quality video and solid high school football coverage.

For editors in their third week on the job, I think our guys are doing just fine.

Constructive criticism is always welcome, but do us a favor and read the paper every once and awhile before bashing it.

Go Ohio!

Wes
Editor-in-Chief, The Post

(P.S. The two former-Posties in Columbus have written a grand total of 0 sports articles between the two of them. So might want to find a more accurate snide remark next time)

Wes – Glad you’re defending your staff, and I hope you didn’t take my post as a wanton attack. After all, In looking at my post on this topic, it has a couple errors in it. No one is perfect, and I hope you recognize that most of the people on here complain because they care so much about the content (though I’ve seen some needlessly harsh criticism of the Post on this site in the past). Trust me, readers caring a lot about your content is a good thing. Making a quality daily paper as a group of unpaid college students is impressive, and I hope the criticism doesn’t get you down. Consider the complaining readers part of the educational experience, and learn from your mistakes.

Totally unrelated topic and not related to my sincere paragraph above:

At the risk of looking like a pedantic jerk, I have to point out that you’re missing two spaces in the third paragraph of the post above. “Anyday” isn’t a word, and “everyday” is an adjective. I only do that because you're an editor and those mistakes are serious pet peeves of mine. I hope that it counts as constructive criticism.

Unpaid? Why, I was making $50 a week as an editor! That was 10 meatball subs!

Seeing as you broke trump, he also has an inappropriate apostrophe in "editors."

Wow.

I'm glad I'm no longer young and inexperienced.

Keep it up Post writers.  The quickest way to learn is to make a few mistakes.  Too bad they have to be so public.

Wes, you're in with a tough crowd here.  Lots of ex Post Toasties and j-school graduates frequent this place.  We are probably the only sports board in the country that regularly critiques other posters' grammar, syntax and word usage.  So, the bottom line is that you shouldn't take any of this personally.  Just be glad you're not on an Ohio A&M board where profane language substitutes for reasoned discussion!

Behold, the power of Bobcatattack.com.  Even The Post editor must appear before us random message board posters and defend itself.....

While there were mistakes, I found the article well written.

(The most bizarre thing I've seen in the Post so far this year is a front page article about a drug bust in Marietta.  Who in in this region ever even thinks about Marietta?  Bizarre.)

I'd also like to note that the student newspaper at Delaware only publishes once a week and makes The Post look like the freakin' New York Times.

This is a great point, and one that we should remember. Posties do a great job overall. It's not their job to be cheerleaders, but it is fair for us to point out factual errors.

Today's football story in the print edition features the attendance and scoring summary of last week's game against Marshall.

I realize compared to many student papers it is quite good.  I also realize it could be a lot better with a bit more time and care (and perhaps warm bodies).

Believe me, I get how hard it is to turn things out on a deadline while juggling classwork, and I also realize this kind of thing happens a lot at (especially small-town) commercial papers, too.  I hope no offense is taken to my pointing out of error -- I truly mean it only to bring awareness, and hopefully, learning.

I read almost daily for four years as a student, and probably read 3-4 times a week the PDF having graduated -- I think that's proof positive that I think you and your crew are doing a large number of things right.

The Post has long considered Marietta part of its coverage area. When I was an editor, we sent someone out there a couple times.

Lets not forget that famous Boo Jackson lede:

"But since hanging up his cleats it’s been the Athens County Municipal Court — not opposing defensive lineman — that he’s been evading..."

If Lowery and crew are quite comfortable destroying a fellow student's reputation in public, then they should be held accountable for their frequent screw-ups.

Writing an article about a football team is not a terribly complex task. And getting names and numbers right seems straightforward, right? Yet so many times this Summer and Spring, I saw a picture caption on the Post's website that attributed some play to the wrong player. Hey guys, JUST MAYBE that isn't Chase Cochran (WR) making the tackle on defense!

First thing I thought of in this thread.

The mistakes referenced in this thread weren't typos, they were factual errors that could have been avoided with proper editing or a simple Google search.

That said, I DO question the effort of Post, especially sports, reporters...  The Post certainly publishes a high amount of sports stories, I would agree with others who say the quality is lacking.

I also laugh at some of The Post tweets I read regarding sports where they claim to be the first to the story.  Bobcatattack is more reliable for breaking news, and we all know the quality of reporting around here is something that could be improved on!

It's not just factual errors.  The Post has also misquoted people, I being one of them.  In an interview last year they quoted me but paraphrased what I said and printed in quotations what they thought I meant.  I was furious as what I was reading in the quotations was not at all what I said, wasn't even close.  Some friends of mine have also had this happen to them where the quote wasn't even what they said or changed around.  I could elaborate more but I'm not going to because my list of errors is long and would embarrass the editor, I am sure (especially if he was one last year as well).

So if you are still reading, editor, I suggest you tell all your reporters that if they are quoting someone, they CANNOT paraphrase it and change it around and still put it in quotations.  That is just poor journalism that is on the level of Fox News.
