From Steve Helwick (Twitter/ X)

Ohio head coach Tim Albin on Kurtis Rourke:

“Kurtis wanted to go back in, but we’re gonna take him back to Athens… an X-ray maybe. I’m not too concerned about it at this time. He’s upset with us… wanted to play it safe.”

Wouldn’t specify the nature of the injury. He said Kurtis had a limp, that there would be X-ray, but claimed the X-ray wasn’t necessarily on the leg.

I do remember someone mentioning an ankle on the broadcast. I just don’t see how it could be an ACL issue since they let him run off the field. Also, Kurtis is gonna have to realize when to just give up on a busted play like that. He’s not like Nathan. He’s gotta remember his arm is what kills defenses, not his feet.

This is baffling to me.
It’s not a concussion.
Timmy says it’s not his knee.
Rourke wanted to play.
I understand protecting a player, but based on what we know, this feels like an overreaction by Albin perhaps to not at least give him a series to see how Rourke felt? This is a bit baffling.

Agreed. What exactly is wrong with him? If it's a concussion, then say it's a concussion. But if it's not a concussion, and the X-ray is not on the leg (as Albin says), then... what happened?

My guess is broken rib(s). Remember how secretive the coaches were when Nathan had a ribcage injury?

I expect he'll sit this week.

Wasn't that referred to for an entire season as an unspecified upper body injury?

Since teams in the NCAA don’t have to disclose injuries of their players, it appeared to me that Albin was being cryptic in a clumsy way.

With the way Rourke ran off the field, who knows what happened? He seemed kinda gimpy, but all football players do that frequently during the season. The knee of the SDSU player hit Rourke’s helmet/neck in such an awkward way I wonder if it wasn’t some kind of stinger? I liked the call of Albin playing it safe seeing as how this game isn’t a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.

But yeah, Harris is an awful decision maker. It’s time to see what Navarro has.

If Albin is not too concerned and confirming that he chose to play it safe... I'm not going to worry.

He wasn't at full strength, took a hard fall onto his knee while ducking a sack. Precautions. The ones they didn't take BEFORE the game.

Let's just hope Navarro is ready to go for LIU.

Talked to someone close to the program this morning. He said it was just a precaution and they were going through a concussion protocol just to be safe. I told him that I'd watched the hit several times and that Rourke's head did not hit the turf that hard, and that on a play right after that CJ's head had hit the ground much harder and he bounced right up and continued to play. My source, responded, "I know." He further said that he would not be surprised if Rourke takes a few snaps against LIU, or maybe even starts. This surprised me. I thought they'd rest him for LIU, even if he was medically cleared to play. My source said that Rourke needs the reps to get back into the groove. This whole scenario is bizaro-world. Nothing seems to make sense.

Perhaps a slight concussion or not able to determine if it was a slight concussion on the sidelines. I agree that it was prudent to pull him based on the expectation of what Harris could do. Obviously in hindsight Harris was unable to deal with the SDSU pressure and made a few poor decisions.
Th fact that Rourke hasn't played in quite a while may have factored in to the decision.
I have to admit it was exciting to see KR out there again. What an arm!!

Not the play in question, but he also took a hard hit on the late option pitch. He seemed a little out of sorts on the next play or two.

The main focus should be getting him healthy for MAC play. OOC games are important for getting down the timing with receivers and on handoffs to RBs, and for needing fewer MAC wins to get to bowl eligibility. Winning the MAC East is top priority, and we;ll need 5+ MAC wins to get there. As well as the D played yesterday, we should easily beat LIU without Kurtis, so it probably wouldn't hurt to hold him out Saturday if the xrays show something odd. No sense in putting him in harm's way for a game we should easily win.

And San Diego State was led by a converted defensive back as the QB. Don’t count your chickens quite yet.

Trevor, I am disappointed you didn't take the chance to revive the Obsessive injury watch thread for this discussion.

The play on the injury looked so harmless to me, then he ran off the field. I would think their fears and hesitation are rooted in the healing knee. All I know is his absence almost certainly cost us a win, but I understand the eyes are on the MAC above all else.

Can we all admit that this has been handled poorly? I'm fine if they decided not to put Rourke back in the game for precautionary measures but Albin needs to do better with the media.

To say he's not concerned about the injury following the game downplays the situation and makes it look like Rourke could've returned. I understand he doesn't want to reveal his injury but it'd be nice to know if it was Albin's call or the medical staff.

If he just said the staff didn't think he should go back in, we move on and accept it. Instead, we're hearing about Rourke being mad about not going in and he's seemingly on track to be back this week, not getting any x-rays when that was brought up as a possibility two days ago.

All of this could've been a non-story if the team got their story straight.

And for those that say the only thing that matters is MAC play, I strongly disagree. This is a super talented roster that has a chance for a 10-win season and a MAC Title. They just lost a 50/50 game in which they outplayed their opponent and probably would've cruised with Kurtis. Seasons like this don't come along often in which you return a MAC Player of the Year quarterback. You don't squander wins if you don't need to.

So like I said earlier, I get playing it safe but I'm still disappointed regardless.

The doctors cleared Rourke to play. If he wasn't ready to go or had any risk of further injuring his knee, they wouldn't have started him.

Otherwise, that would be incompetent and reckless.

Once you get the full go ahead, you can't play afraid. Kurtis wanted to go back in. We don't know the reasons why he wasn't allowed to return. It would've been nice to have some clarity.

The fact Albin is already saying Kurtis is on track to play this weekend against LIU alludes to the point this wasn't very serious and that they might've played this safer than what they would've had he not torn his ACL last year.

This seems bizarre but I don't expect Albin to say "Rourke is our meal ticket and I need to make a bowl game." That would be so refreshing to hear.

If you are a die-hard and/or lifelong Bobcat Fan, you have watched these kinds of early season games many times. A head-scratcher in so many ways. Lopsided official crew missing calls right in front of their eyes, seams in on FG miss, mysterious Rourke injury, 3 int's from Harris, etc.

Can't go back. On to the Sharks.

Absolutely embarrassing in how Timmy treated Rourke in this game. None of it makes sense. None of it. Glad we saved Rourke for Long Island. Good grief Timmy.

100% in agreement. I've been shouting this for years, primarily on the basketball board of BA. While winning the MAC East and the MACC is nice, it doesn't earn national recognition for Ohio like going 12-0 (or close to it) with wins against teams like SDSU and ISU.

Exactly. This was a primetime game on national TV against a recognizable name. Miami has two MAC championships post-Roethlisberger but never does squat in the non conference. Whose program would you rather have in that time: ours or theirs? It's beating Pitt at home, beating Penn State that engages the fan base. Western Michigan doesn't pack Ford Field if they're 9-3.
