Ohio Accepts Invitation to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Bobcats to face Utah State in Boise, Idaho on Dec. 17

Dec. 4, 2011

ATHENS, Ohio – Following a 2011 season where the Ohio University football team (9-4; 6-2) recorded nine wins for just the sixth time in school history and set nine team records, the Bobcats have been invited to play in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 17 in Boise, Idaho.

The Bobcats will take on Utah State (7-5; 5-2) on ESPN, beginning at 5:30 p.m. (ET) inside Bronco Stadium. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is the second game of the entire bowl calendar and the only one in its timeslot.

“This is a great bowl with a long-standing tradition and we are honored to be a part of the experience,” said athletic director Jim Schaus. “Having an opportunity to compete in a third straight bowl game is a tremendous step for our football program and we couldn’t be happier to play on the blue turf in Boise.”

Ohio will play in a bowl game for the third straight season and will make its fourth bowl appearance in the last six seasons. The Bobcats will make their sixth bowl appearance all-time. A year ago, the Bobcats represented the Mid-American Conference in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

“The Ohio University football program is extremely excited for this wonderful opportunity in Boise,” said head coach Frank Solich. “For the past two years, this has been one of the premier bowl games for the Mid-American Conference. I couldn’t be happier for our team and our 17 seniors, who have given so much to this program.”

Ohio enters the game after it won the MAC East Division crown for the third time in the last six years. The Bobcats got off to the best start to a season since 1976 as they started 3-0. Ohio closed the regular season on a high note as it posted five straight victories. Following the year, the Bobcats’ earned a league-best 11 spots on the All-MAC team.

Offensively, sophomore quarterback Tyler Tettleton (Norman, Okla.) set 12 single-season records, accounted for 35 touchdowns (26 passing; 9 rushing) and 3,709 total yards of offense. Senior LaVon Brazill (Lantana, Fla.) caught a team-best 10 receiving touchdowns and became the first wide receiver in school history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards.

Defensively, senior linebacker Noah Keller (Kearney, Neb.) anchored a defensive unit that ranked second in the league in points allowed (22.1 points per game). Keller finished the year with team-best 103 tackles.

“We’re delighted that Ohio and Utah State will be the match-up in our Bowl,” said Kevin McDonald, Executive Director, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. “Both teams have well-coached, resurgent programs with powerful offenses so the fans are sure to see a competitive and entertaining game on the blue turf in Boise.”

Utah State finished the year with five-straight victories and brings the nation’s sixth-ranked rushing attack into Bronco Stadium.  Utah State faced a tough out-of-conference schedule and lost narrowly to two national powers, Auburn and BYU.  Utah State’s last bowl appearance was in 1997 vs. Cincinnati in the same venue, the formerly-named Humanitarian Bowl.  Overall, this will be Utah State’s seventh bowl appearance in the program’s history.

Information on travel to Boise will be available on Ohio's "Bowl Central" website this week.

I was looking on the Toledo board trying to find out which bowl they will go to and they thought it would be the BBVA bowl. Someone then said it will be Pitt v Kentucky and everyone got upset. About 10 minutes later someone realized that Kentucky isn't bowl eligible. We might be going to a worse bowl but at least we don't have dumb fans. Go Cats!

Well. at least I'm happy to see the MAC get into five bowl games although I fail to understand why we got the worst of the bunch.  Must have something to do with choking miserably in the second half.

I would think O.U. had a pretty good idea that losing the MACC meant going to Idaho.

Wonder when we'll find out if they're able to send  the 110.

Having them there would  probably double the numder of  OUr fans.

Perfect opportunity to excercise some demons, open the playbook wide open, pin the ears back, and go for broke. This season didn't turn out like we hoped but there's still a chance to go out on a high note and make history with our first bowl win.

No more sulking about Detroit, whining about Boise, or rolling our eyes at USU, let's get after it!

I still haven't the faintest freaking clue why the MAC is affiliated with this bowl.

Here's a novel idea.  Forget this bowl and take the money that we're going to spend going there and plow it into the new indoor football practice facility.  Makes sense to me.

Yep, them demons surely are in need of some exercise.  They've gotten flabby and slow, kind of like our defensive backs.

I thought this as well. This should be WAC-MVC or WAC-#8 PAC12 game.

Same bowl NIU went to last year after losing to Miami in Detroit.  BTW, NIU finished with a nice win over Fresno State.  Right now, a headline outlining Ohio's first ever bowl win will be sweet.  Half the teams in bowls will finish with loses, Ohio needs to to get into the group finishing with wins. Let us follow NIU's lead, win a bowl, return to Detroit, win the MAC and have a nice post season streak, then we might be fussy about where the team goes.

Possibly the statement of the decade. Thank you sir. I was having my own pity party until I read this. Very nice. Exactly what we needed to hear and exactly what needs to be said to the team.

You can't change the past, so lets effect the future.

I guess Pizza knows that they're not going to get many Big Tedozen fans -- whatever the team -- to show up for a bowl game against the MAC in Detroit (once you've been to a bowl game in FL, TX or CA, MI just doesn't make it.  So they targeted the two MAC teams that could bring the most bodies: Toledo & WMU.  Toledo is attractive elsewhere because they almost beat O$U, the actually beat Syracuse, they beat Temps in Philly and went 1-1 in back-to-back games on national TV that combined for 252 points.  Personally, I always thought the Toledo would've been the first pick for Pizza because they have a big local fan base and are at least known to most fans among the three most likely to go (Illinois, N'western & Purdue).  WMU, on the other hand, has only a win against UConn (not bowl eligible), a 66-63 loss to Toledo and beating the ever-loving crap out of a defenseless Akron team.  I guess the draw for their opponent's fans will be the prospect of a relatively easy win.

In SHOCKING news, it took Alan Swank (The Swankster) more than 10 minutes to criticize us going to a bowl game!  Proud of you, buddy!  Always supporting our student-athletes.
