I saw much poor coaching on our side today. Take a look at the time my posts complaining about the lack of hurry-yp in our offense were posted as compared to the game action. It was EXACTLY when we went to the hurry-up--TO OUR IDENTITY WHEN OUR OFFENSE PLAYED ITS BEST THIS YEAR--late in the second quarter that we started scoring, that our offense finally got going.
What is far, far away the stupidest penalty in football? (Well, may be tied with stupid personal fouls.) Not gettting a play off before the play clock expires. We had that situation at least three times today. My gawd, we came out of halftime prep and the first thing we do on our first play from scrimmage is burn a time out on our first play because the play clock is running out. Are you kidding me?
Hey, how about 37 seconds left in the game and ball at their 6-inch line and we run a one-back set, going with our qb right up the middle from the shot gun. Gee, it's not like we've done that before. Our coaches are fulltime professionals and they don't have a two-back set for that situation that would would prevent the defense from keying on our usual set?
About mid-way third quarter and USU has it at about their 25, 3rd and five. We don't blitz (hardly blitzed all day) and they get the first down. Next play their guy goes for a 45 yard run. This gave them time and field position such that we almost ran out of clock to win it. How could we not blitz in that situation given that their passing attack had showed absolutely no ability to burn us long?
We get it at about our 35 with about 1:34 to go in the first half. Pass for about 6. Then run Harden up the middle for about 3. How could we possibly call a run at that point. All we did was chew up clock, ended up punting. Brilliant two minute drill.
These things are not lightning bolts. These are very basic football.
We should be thinking about beating the top teams, ranked teams. Instead we lost to NIU and just barely beat USU.
