From what I've heard Akron is looking to "cough up" a lot of dough for their next coach. Unlike Ohio at this point, they have more money than brains up there in [Summit] County. Here in Athens we have the reverse problem, we've got a great football brain trust but we are lacking in the money department. We're waiting for the big "game changing" endowment gift from BG86 or Alan Swank.
What exactly are you talking about? Frank's salary is second in the MAC behind Temple's Steve Adazzio. He's making at least 100k more than the average MAC football coach not including a very generous bonus structure. There is an issue with money at Ohio from the standpoint of having enough donors to cover the athletic department funding needs and the school covers with student fees. This situation is the case at every MAC school except for Toledo, BG and Miami which have a significant donor contribution to the athletic budget. 50 years of solid football at those schools does a lot for shaping donor attitudes positively.
I'm speaking of the recent issues related to our the whole budget situation at Ohio. We do not have the kind of corporate support that Akron seems to have now. Our whole university seems to be strapped for money, except for the colleges of Engineering and Osteopathic Medicine, and to a lesser extent the College of Education. The reliance on student fees to support the athletic budget at the current level is being questioned on all sides. That being said, I think Dr. McDavis will keep it at about the same level, but we would be on much more solid ground for our athletic funding if we could find an athletic sugar daddy (or mommy) like those supporting the aforementioned engineering, osteopathic and education colleges.
