Interesting hire at Akron.  Could be good for the MAC.

Interesting is an understatement. That is a homerun hire. Anyone know why he left Auburn? Was he fired?

Great hire...Very exciting for the MAC in general but...

"Landing Bowden is a coup for the Mid-American Conference school and gives Akron a high-profile football coach second only to Ohio State’s Urban Meyer in the state."

Really?  Please...

The rumor was he was hiding a long running pay for play situation that he unknowingly inherited and when he let his feelings be known about it, he was pushed out by Boosters / Admin...

Wasn't there also a simmering sexual harassment / palimony situation with a Secretary in the AD's office or do I have my Bowdens' mixed up?

I guess that Akron will be a game again. Oh well. This has to be good for the MAC.

In 2011 the MAC across the board was about as good as it has ever been. Though it lacked a true powerhouse, almost all the teams were at least OK. Only Akron held the league average back. Average Sagarin ratings for the non AQ conferences in 2011 were:
Mountain West 65.77
CUSA 64.97
WAC 63.57
MAC 63.56
Sunbelt 60.16

Akron, with its rating of 42.5 lowered the conference average significantly. Exclude Akron, and the conference average was 64.95, about the same as CUSA. Bowden will no doubt bring Akron back to respectibilty, but will also bring additional attention to the MAC.

BIG HIRE by smAkron...Bowden has proven he will accept all types of transfers at his prior program North Alabama and he has strong ties in SEC country namely Fla. I was told by a D1 coach that "Anyone can get accepted to Akron" so I would assume a turnaround and new "swagger" is in order for the Zips.

The story in the Plain Dealer also says Brian Wagner has been granted his release.

There's a reason this guy left Auburn and couldn't find another job for a decade. Akron is playing with fire here. But I guess when you're the worst program in the country, you must take chances.

Found this old article about Bowden's termination at Auburn. It is interesting to note his pay, barely over a decade ago. Per the article, when terminated he had 4 years left on his contract at $155,000 a year. How times have changed.

What's the over/under on how long before Akron is found to have committed major violations? 3 years?

This will get Akron a lot of publicity since they hired someone with a well-known name, but I'm not convinced it's a good hire. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I personally don't see any similarities between Bowden and Faust, other than the fact each is/was coach at Akron and both previously spent time at a major program. Faust a bust at ND after being just a high school coach. Bowden was successful at Auburn and other collegiate stops. Faust was from Ohio. Bowden doesn't have any Ohio ties except for one year as an assistant at Akron. Faust replaced a highly popular coach. Bowden replaces a highly unpopular coach. I remember Faust bursting into my high school cafeteria while at ND, raspily shouting, "Go Moeller! Go Irish!" then bowing down and saying a few Hail Mary's in front of all of us. Bowden...uhhh...well...not so much.

It is kind of weird, I guess, that Bowden's one year at Akron was in 1986 as an assistant under Faust.

I think it's a good hire to fill their desperate need to pump life into the program, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will turn out great in the long term.

In his defense, Bowden has won everywhere he's coached. He coached at Salem (19-13), Samford (45-23-1), Auburn (47-17-1) and North Alabama (29-10). As far as NCAA violations, I guess we'll have to wait and see. Auburn absolutely had violations going on when he got there, and they were already on probation his first year, but I don't think he was ever accused of any while he was coach. He was fired for a 1-5 start a few years later, when the program appeared to be going the wrong direction. Were they going the wrong direction because of his coaching? His recruiting? Because of continuing fallout from the prior NCAA violations? I have no clue.

Infocision should be packed for most of their home games, so the Zippos should at least lead the MAC in attendance next year.  This is a band aid approach to their problems, tho.  No secret that Bowden wants back in a Big 6/AQ program and Akron is merely a waystop.  He's only about 55, so if he can get 2-3 winning seasons in the next 5 he'll be ready to move on to greener pastures.  Just in time for some other coach to deal with the NCAA problems that are likely to develop.

Why do people say this? Bowden has been a coach at four universities and as far as I know there have been no major NCAA violations.

I think this is a great hire.  College football success is just as much about recruiting as it is about X's and O's.  It is easy to win, especially in the MAC, when you have better talent.  Bowden's name will command attention in the living rooms of upper-tier MAC talent.  I think it's good for the conference to have some name recognition.  Hopefully he runs a clean program.  Akron has a reputation of having an athletic department full or rotten apples right now.  I have zero respect for Akron's football or basketball programs, as well as their academics.  Maybe this is a jolt that changes some of that.

Akron seems to be taking the Ohio approach...hire a name coach with big school background to elevate them from the dregs of the MAC.  We will see if it works out as well as it has so far at Ohio.  Not sure about the "rotten egg" comment.   They have the best coach in the country for soccer, and Dambrot has done nothing but win with a philosphy of recruitng solid family kids from winning high school programs.  I think you have them confused with Kent's basketball program...

This is beyond interesting. This is a great hire - actually a complete slam dunk in the short term. This is going to sell tickets like mad at zippy and at stadiums throughout the MAC. MAC schools rarely get this amount of head coaching experience in a hire. The only other one leads our beloved Bobcats. This is a great move, and just the splash they needed.

It'll be interesting to see what the salary is.  I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than Frank's making now.  What's the head Owlpoop getting now?
