We had a long discussion about this before the season, and other than documenting that MH has very, very limited math skills, we established that each year IIemple takes well over 25 letters of intent a year because they know that many of them will not academically qualify, and will have to go the prep school or JUCO route. Also, many of them are double counted because the same name will show up in 2-3 recruiting classes.
For those interested in the original discussion, and wondering what happens to all the people when IIemple gets letters of intent from 129 people over a 5 year period, but can only have 85 on scholarship,
here is the original thread.
As you can see, a lot don't qualify, while many others end up kicked off the team. It's a pretty stark contrast to Ohio, where they average about 20-22 recruits per year. Ohio has had a few non-qualifiers go the Prep school route, and a few go the JUCO route, and had a few kicked off the team, but IIemple takes these to a whole new level. Also, Ohio tends to add a player or two from the walkon ranks that never is included in the recruiting rankings at all, but that limits the number of scholarships they can offer. I doubt IIemple does that very often, if ever.
