What's interesting is that a number of sports people out here are saying  that, if Temple gets into the Big East,it will expedite the departure of teams currently looking to leave the conference and spur other teams (Notre Dame was mentioned), to start looking .

The general consensus is  also that,if the BCS stays, the Big East will be losing its automatic bid.

Interesting. I read something today along the lines of, "Be prepared for the B1G and SEC to raid the ACC to get to 16 teams." The ACC schools specifically mentioned were Georgia Tech (to the B1G, which actually kinda makes sense given the Atlanta TV market and the SEC already having Georgia), Virginia, Maryland, and VA Tech (Notre Dame and Rutgers were non-ACC schools to be targeted). If that happens, you've got to figure the ACC will then look to the Big East to restock.

What that means for Ohio specifically and the MAC generally, who knows? But best of luck to Temple. You guys never really fit in our conference, and I'll happily take your money if you really want to leave. And we'll see what happens in a few years if/when Big East football is no more.

I'll truly miss making the drive from Wellesley to Philly to see the Cats beat the birds in front of an 85% empty Linc.

MAC earned 11 million in revenue.. Temple paying 3.5 seems plenty.

Whatever the market will bear, TUV.  Sometimes the payment isn't for actual inconvenience; how bad the school wants to leave is also a factor.  A jury might have awarded less, but this ain't a trial...it's negotiations.

Rather then holding Temple ransom for additional millions for abruptly exiting, I hope the MAC brain trust considers some out-of-the-box thinking. Say agreeing to Temple's immediate release in return for guaranteed home and home football series to include each Big East football school versus MAC schools. If such series are already scheduled(Cincy vs. Miami, etc), the Big East school would be required to schedule another home and home series. The scheduling to be coordinated by the league offices. Since the Big East has fewer football schools, I'd like to see the same requirement for Basketball so that each MAC school benefits from such an arrangement.

That would be great if the Big East had ANY cachet at all. As it stands, they have none. give us the benjamins.

Sounds like it's official. I'll miss the automatically "W" we could always put on the schedule at the beginning of the year.

The important part they fail to mention in the article, and I saw via twitter is MAC getting $6 million

I'm not exactly sure what Temple's hurry is to...

a.) join a conference that is walking on thin ice to begin with

b). REjoin a conference that gave them the dropkick a few years ago because they weren't good enough.

And at a price of 6 million to do it.

It's all about the money. I can bet $6 million plus whatever they get from the MAC is less than what the Big East will pay them. Meaning it is a net positive on the money equation.

2nd, there only chance to get in the Big East was to do so in a hurry, if they waited they probably weren't going to be invited.

"After Temple’s dismissal from the Big East, the Owls were an independent for two seasons before joining the Mid-American Conference in 2007. Temple will pay the MAC $6 million to leave with less than one year's notice, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, more than double what MAC by-laws require teams to pay ($2.5 million) with two year’s notice. Temple also must pay the Atlantic 10, where its Olympic sports compete, $1 million to leave after next season. It would have cost $2 million to leave before this season."

I'm really going to miss Temple.

They have been our chief rival for the last 3 or 4 years and that game was really starting to become the highlight of the MAC season for us. Not to mention that the schools have absolutely nothing in common, which I think helps enhance a rivalry contrary to historical examples.

It was fun playing Temple for all the MAC East marbles every year. Now what do we have? BG? Kent? Akron? Miami? Buffalo? Sigh.... Just reading that list makes me depressed.

I used to be all for sticking around the MAC, but with Temple leaving, and if we continue our success, I think we are going to outgrow this conference in a few years.

I too will miss what has become a near automatic win. Among conference foes, we have by far our best record against them, having won 80% of our games against them (2nd place is Kent State, against whom we've won 62.5% of our games). I won't miss their **** fans.

I agree with Paul Graham on this one.  As I stated elsewhere, I really enjoyed our games with Temple.  In the few short years we played them, I feel they became our best rivalry game.  It was always fun to watch.  Of course we still have the Red Chickens, but after that I could care less about the rest of the MAC schools.  Trying to get excited about Akron, Can't State, BUGS or the others is like trying to get excited about watching your mother fry chicken.  Sorry, but we lost something with Temple's departure.  Just my $.02.

Selfishly I hope we can develop a rivalry with UMASS, simply because I think there is a great story to tell on an ESPN broadcast (looks in anorris' direction) regarding the founding of OHIO in the Bunch of Grapes Tavern on State Street in Boston.

Wouldn't it be a great open to a broadcast to have the Ohio Bobcats bus and the entire team and staff in front of the plaque that commemorates the founding of OHIO at this site, getting a history lesson about OHIO's ties to Boston, and then transition to the open of the broadcast crew launching this new rivalry at Gillette?

UMASS may only be around for one year due to the MAC's out clause, but for one night that would make for pretty cool TV, and give most OHIO alumnus a history lesson as well.  And let's face it, Miami doesn't really care much about FB right now, so that is hardly a rivalry at this point.
