this dude better start watching some tape on the Bobcats... I love getting first shot at them - i think this game could be worthy of a national ABC game at noon.

Man, I'm not impressed with this hire.  I would've kep the current coach or paid Dan Mullen whatever was needed to get him there.

I bet Notre Dame fans/alumni are laughing at State Penn for hiring the New England Offensive Coordinator.

And, reportedly, he's staying with the Patriots through the playoffs. Recruits have been backing away for months, and he's not going to make it his #1 priority to get them back on board. Bad bad bad move (but good good good news for us!).

What are the rules about one team attending the spring game of another team?  Penn State will have a complete season of film for our offense and we will have nothing on Penn State since it is the opener for both teams.

It will likely be televised on BTN.

There's a Rivals.com article advising Big Tedozen coaches to watch the AFC championship game tomorrow for a preview of the PSU offense for next year:

Turney13 has the right idea.....1st game, after 46 years, under a new head coach @ Penn State deserves ABC national coverage.
That would be big.
Add in ESPN Game Day
That would be bigger.
WOW I just might attend.
History in the making.

Joe Pa will be missed.  I know some didn't like him, but he was always one of my favorites.  Not only was he a unique individual, but he ran an almost squeaky-clean program -- no major NCAA violations in 40+ years.  Unfortunately, he won't be around to fully explain/defend his actions (or lack thereof) in the Sandusky scandal.  He admitted he could/should have done more, but I'm still not sure that PSU's actions were appropriate.

It'll be interesting to see how PSU handles next year.  O'Brien will have it tough enough to follow in Joe Pa's footsteps; now do they pile on by doing something like dedicating the season to Joe Pa?

I would expect the team to wear some sort of patch with his initials this season.

OHIO is going to be preseason favorites to win the MAC so yes its time to break out the ABC coverage for this game. What a showcase and a chance for the Cats to pull out a program changing type win at Happy Valley.

WOW I would seriously question the integrity of a board/admin who allows this last post to remain for another 24 hours. After the outcry against my earlier posts I would expect to see 100's of complaints against the blatant disrespect of a great college football coach who isnt even buried yet. People do read the board and stuff like this is just trailer park trash!

Alright, I'm not really that upset about getting my post deleted cuz it was really just a joke but can some admin please explain to me which of the following rules my post broke?

Its not your place to decide what is good humor or what is a jab that crosses a line.  The appropriateness of the joke is completely subjective and I think its unfair of you to censor posts just because you feel some readers may not think a joke is funny.

Inappropriate Posts

Inappropriate posts include:

  • Flames ("you suck!"), personal attacks, and profanity.
  • Baiting (responding to relevant post with non-relevant, flame post)
  • Chest-beating by fans of other teams ("Ohio sucks!").
  • Factually false posts, particularly of a personal nature with regards to players and coaches.
  • Any rumor spreading, however implicit, regarding legal isssues (where charges have not been filed) or personal lives of athletes or coaches.
  • Posts named using someone elses name. (Cleve Bryant, Jim Grobe, Snoopy Graham)
  • Post promoting products, services, web sites, or anything else.
  • Profanity (that you won't hear during prime time television), either in the title or in the body of text.

Dude don't be a @ssclown. If you can't show respect for the living at least show some for the dead. God forbid something else happens to any Ohio Bobcats but to make a joke about a coach on a football board. Where is your common decency?

To (hopefully) take this thread back to a more light hearted (football related) place...

Firstly, the football program, athletic department and university are carrying a boatload of bad publicity that will take years to distance themselves from. Should the football program, athletic department or university carry that shame, or are they being blamed for the despicable actions of one person? That is arguable, but all the arguments in the world won't change public opinion.

Secondly, for the first time since Lyndon B. Johnson was in the White House, Joe Paterno will not be prowling the sidelines in Happy Valley. Yes, he has arguably been little more than a figurehead for the past couple of years, but he was a figurehead that brought stability, respect and recognition to the program.

Thirdly, the man who has been hired to replace Paterno—former New England Patriots' offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien—was not exactly a popular choice. At least, not among former Nittany Lions.

Fourthly, all of these issues are doing nothing to help recruiting.

With all of that said, Penn State returns the fewest starters in the Big Ten—five on each side of the ball.

The offensive line returns one starter, and it is questionable whether the returning quarterbacks are beneficial to the offense.

PSU has typically reloaded on defense, but that was under Paterno. Who knows what O'Brien, whose specialty is the offense, will put together.

Will Penn State face some sort of sanctions for the sex abuse scandal or are sanctions in this case beyond the reach of the NCAA?

I don't know, but expect the Nits to struggle to reach seven wins.

Seems like an especially good time to pull off that oft discussed nationally viewed upset...

I'm still a little bitter about being unnecessarily censored twice in one week so I'll offer this tidbit:

With all the bad publicity around Penn State and now this article talking about how they return almost no starters, beating them will not be a sign of how high we have climbed, but how far they have fallen.

They still have a huge funding / facilities / recruiting advantage over us...Their fall will not diminish my celebration in the least should OHIO pull this one off...

I kinda think it's one of those rare "low risk, high reward" type hires. You really don't see them often. Odds are whomever Penn St hired would catch some flack from the fans, alumni, etc because they were bound and determined to start fresh outside the Paterno "family." It's going to be really hard for someone to succeed at PSU immediately after Paterno was fired, and especially now that emotions are sky-high from his death and the upcoming Sandusky trial. By hiring O'Brien they are giving a young coach a chance to succeed in an EXTREMELY hostile environment, and if he doesn't (for whatever reason) they will at least buffer the tricky post-Paterno years. In four years, if the team is struggling they can fire O'Brien and go after one of those coaches who are ALWAYS available (think Gus Malzahn, Larry Fedora, Jim McElwain, etc.). If O'Brien shows some signs of life, then they could theoretically have found a gem. Either way it's a way for Penn St to tread water for a few years while the Meyers and Hokes settle in and the Sandusky trial gets settled.

For the record, I think O'Brien is hiring a lights-out staff and will surely have some great recruiting classes starting next season on.

Just booked a hotel for this game. FYI majority of hotels I looked at are requiring 2 night stays.

For those that have already booked, where (or how close) are you staying? What I'm seeing after a quick look is mostly sold out, and 220+ a night.

I'm staying at the Holiday Inn in State College. Using points but I believe it was $200+ a night, 2 night minimum. This was really just a worse case backup plan for me. Most likely kickoff with either be at Noon or 3. If its a noon game I might cancel this and stay somewhere 30-45 min outside State College, then drive in that morning.
