Enjoy the Marshall/American Western Game this week.

That institution (while charter approved in 1802) never came to be.  Our University however, was originally chartered as Ohio University in 1804.

While it's frustrating that we have once again fallen to the mighty Orange and Black of Ohio A&M College, we survived and will now press on against the Marshall Academy this weekend.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Let me just say what most people think. Columbus, Ohio is a sad place which is culturally void of anything except Ohio State athletics. It used to be a large grain silo with a football team. Now it's just a big strip mall with a football team. There is more to life than Ohio State football games.

I love this prank. This can do nothing but help OU's enrollment to some small extent by getting it's name out there. You guys post on here all the time that you didn't factor the level of football success into your college decision. I would say it's safe to say no one factors the "class" of our mascot Rufus into their future college decision. "Class" is a dangerous word so be careful when you use it. Props to D.A. for bringing up the old Hayes debacle.

This kid has done more for Ohio University as a former student than most alums ever will. In my book, he is a legend.

This is a case study in psychoanalysis. When the news first broke about this, along with a grainy video, this guy was a classless jerk.

Now, with "the photo," he is nothing short of a hero.

Fox Sports radio did about 15 minutes on the topic tonight around 6:15.  At first, I thought this was awful for the university and for us as grads/fans...but I was wrong.  I think this completely makes the entire football season.  I applaud Rufus (its a one time thing though so Rufus 2.0 should not attempt)  Screw the buckeye nation.  I live in columbus and have to put up with 24-7 buckeye lunacy from their fans and the media.  I'm glad they get some of their own medicine for once.

I can assure you that Cutler Hall did not find this nearly as humorous as some of you are, and the people in charge let it be known!  Not a good day at work for a few people.

Sports Nation on Espn asked if Rufus was a Jerk or a Hero.  By a small margin  Hero won out.  The show was being taped at Iowa and the fans there were going nuts cheering for Rufus.

for free publicity - 50/50 is not so bad.  Considering, as JCW notes in his signature, that half of what is spent on advertising is wasted and determining the unproductive half is not possible - this little incident is probably effectively creating some brand awareness out there...  and there ain't nothing wrong with that. That's why I say there is no such thing as bad publicity...you just don't know how people are going to react.  If we are getting 50% approval on this...its pretty good.  When you consider the cost (zero) its damn good.  It would be hard to plan something so successful...which brought me to a realization...

If I worked in Cutler Hall and was in any way responsible for the selection and management of Rufus - I'd be on pins and needles wondering if I was going to have a job.  And this is how it should be - there is no way that this was planned by the marketing department and any indication that it was would be a disaster for Ohio in scheduling big time money games - perhaps even some home and home match-ups...who wants to subject their student athletes and cheerleaders to an atmosphere that is "out of control" due to a lack of effective leadership?  Not Ohio State, or Iowa or any of the other schools with which we hope to compete.  Having the mascot, or any party under the control and direction of the University create a scene that could result in embarrassment or injury has to be unacceptable.  Bad management, plain and simple.  I wouldn't be surprised if some heads roll.    I am sure that Ohio wants to maintain its relationship with Ohio State.  I totally get how the university feels about this and why they are not finding the humor.  Getting a check for $850K  did not include a mascot attack that would play on every possible media outlet for a week afterwards.  I can see how Ohio State might not be too inclined to invite Ohio and its furry little terrorist back to Columbus.  So I get that.

But I also can't help but get the giggles every time I see that cat boppin' old Brutus in the puss. ...  and I know that the publicity OU is getting from this is not at all a bad thing.  All the more reason the University must maintain its humorless stance.

Front page, above the fold in Columbus this morning.

And to think last week, people's lives were changed throughout SE Ohio, and Athens in particular.  Individuals lives changed for weeks/months.  The University is providing assistance to and housing to the displaced.  And the Dispatch puts this earth shattering event above the fold Tuesday after the Saturday.

Now I know JCW will contend that I may be pitching the great media conspiracy that many espouse here.  But alas no.  I'm simply pointing out that the perspectives of people's lives in and around Columbus are GREATLY effed up if this is "above the fold" worthy THREE DAYS AFTER IT EVEN happened.

Did anyone here see the HUGE mention about this in Sunday's Dispatch?  One measly paragraph in the middle of the sports page!  That was all this deserved until Cbus started making a bigger deal of it.  And it's really all it deserves now.

But hey, the Dispatch thinks it will sell papers, so run with it!  Really pretty redonkulous the longer it goes on.  I'm actually feeling a little ashamed that Cutler (if JCW is to be believed) is really upset by this.  The more A&M doesn't let it go, the worse A&M looks for lending credibility to this as something other than a prank.

BTW, summing all the separate videos, this has now received over 750,000 views on YouTube.  And I guarantee people aren't viewing it because it is disgracing Ohio and they can't get enough of Ohio being disgraced.  Dudes and dudettes, they are watching it because they think it is DAMN FUNNY.  The black eye is already healing, and the positive publicity train has left the station kids.

If Ohio had won Saturday, the story would have been a little "Ohio beat tOSU", but a lot of "the National Title contender Buckeyes lost."  Ohio would have gotten a couple good days, then the subsequent days would have been filled with inane conversation about Ozcat's favorite topic of how a one loss tOSU would have been more deserving to play for the crystal football than Boise State.

It takes a pretty died in the wool CFB fan to recall that App State beat Michigan.  But this event of "disgrace" has already exceeded the total number of views on YouTube of that upset...and that happened THREE YEARS AGO!

Do I wish this event hadn't happened...meh...sure.  But every time I look at Medler's avatar I will laugh out loud, and I'll do so until I die.  I'll remember that I was there and I laughed, and the sun was bright, and mcbin should have worn more sunscreen, and that I was able to help The Love out with better seats, and that I was glad that I don't live in Ohio anymore.

But kids, I donate a lot of time to Ohio in alumni relations and student recruiting, and I donate a lot of money to Ohio to support academics and athletics.  And this is a total non event other than being a humorous footnote.

To be honest, I totally forgot about Rufus v Brutus until reading all this nonsense about how this event will forever cast a pall on our beloved Ohio.  This was not why I left the game with five minutes gone in the second quarter.  I was disappointed and upset that this team missed a tremendous opportunity to market itself and the University to thousands of Ohio alums that are dually allegiant, but might have been persuaded to spend less money on tOSU garb for themselves and their kids and might purchase more on Green and White in the future.  Or donate when they hadn't.  Or purchase one of those terribly expensive $99 four pack season tickets.

But folks, had this game been closer, or our kids would have pulled off the Georgetown of Ohio football, this event would have NEVER, EVER, have made a tOSU fan an Ohio fan.  EVER...NEVER.  Nor would it have made random guy an Ohio fan.  We missed an opportunity with our own.  And really, if we didn't have them on board before, they won't be less loyal because of Saturday's defeat, nor will they be less loyal because a dude from the county where the wacky weed comes from pulled off this prank.

Kids, there are other $850k paychecks out there.  I could care less if we ever play those guys again, and would personally prefer that we don't.  Move on.

And A&M fans, I preferred it when you looked down your noses at us and you didn't lurk here.  Sure, whatever you say...your band is better, your team is better, and we're not fit to carry your jock straps, think whatever you need to so that you can feel good about yourselves...now go away.  YN, OC, JCW, etc, you're still good in my book although I don't get your dual camp position

Let's just right the ship and beat stupid cow.  And if you can afford to, donate a little money to those who lost their homes last week.

The initial tackle attempt was funny.

The punch to the face is semi-funny and the picture is funnier.

The attempted punch to the groin is not even slightly funny.

I'm certainly not politically correct, but it ceases to be funny when a person, unprovoked, actually tries to cause harm to another person.

People on this board love to bash Robert Reynolds and his Barry Alvarez-endorsed 1-game suspension (Yep, Tressel is win-at-all-costs by sitting him against very good Iowa and bringing him back for Indiana). Yet, I would want my neck and jewels protected equally, and the mascots are not even caught up in the heat of a physically competitive game. A direct punch to the testicles can cause some serious, long-term damage.

Edit: Plus, Brutus has been a woman in the past, so Rufus could have very well been attacking a college female.

I guess I have always thought Ohio University is above taking pleasure in WWE-like publicity.

Wouldn't this make the entire attack even worse?

Plus, I don't recall ever feeling like I had the right to punch a fellow classmate in her private region.

Again, it's hard not to chuckle at the video. I just think it's difficult to actually take pride in the incident, and that the former Rufus is too low to be called a redneck douchebag.

I think it's pretty clear that the University didn't endorse, solicit or condone the event.  And pretty much everyone here has said they would have preferred it hadn't happened, both tOSU and Ohio fans.  And if someone had been hurt, which it has been reported that they weren't, everyone's sentiments would be significantly different than they have been reflected here.

And I've been on here for a few years and I can't recall Robert Reynolds ever being referenced here.  Doesn't mean you are wrong, just saying.  And I especially don't recall any ten page threads about it.

Here is the difference between your team and OUrs.  You guys hand out maybe one game suspensions for infractions while right now one of our better players is serving a 6 week suspension for a DUI.  That is why we seem to make fun of your punishment system because it isn't nearly as harsh as OUrs.

Brutus' facebook profile picture...

http://www.thelantern.com/campus/brutus-can-t-break-silence-about-bobcat-brawl-1.1640012

On another note, it's scary how his facebook page is unsearchable, but it took me maybe 20 seconds to find it, along with what is likely his phone number.  Just a warning to you kids out there...

40 seconds was enough facebook creeping for me this week.

DA:  Obviously you do not read the Dispatch, the regional coverage of the situation in the Plains by the Columbus media has been quite good, there have been stories of the opening of Weld House as a shelter and other assistance that Ohio University has given.  Channel 4 has been in The Plains the past two days.  This has been national news, not because of Ohio State but because #1 it is amusing #2 it lacks sportsmanship.  As evidence by a quick google search this mascot antics thing is almost always news, national and regional.  I can remember the Sausage race where the idiot hit one with the bat, the drunk Stanford tree, the Oregon Duck, and not one of those had ties to Ohio State and yet they still found their way onto the National scene.  Just the way things are in the age of instant media and 24 hour news.

Had we actually played like we did in 2008 and pulled off the upset, Rufus could have actually made the cover of SI.
