As disgusting as the Sandusky scandal is, don't expect PSU to get the death penalty.  Look at what UNC got when the NCAA found SEVEN major violations, including widespread academic fraud, multiple players receiving impermissible benefits (including thousands of dollars from agents) and a failure to monitor the football program: no 2012 postseason; five football scholarships eliminated each of the next three years; and three years probation.   It's not a football-related scandal; it IS a scandal involving a former football assistant, the late football coach, the AD, the school prez and several trustees.  Yes, it shows that football coaches can be too powerful at a school; remember Gordo's comment about Tressel firing him.  But if that's what PSU gets the death penalty for, they'll also have to go after Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma,....

Why wait for the PSU fallout? Do we really want to play this game? What would happen if we backed out right now?

This is a crazy yet interesting idea. You want headlines and national recognition? Pulling out now and saying we dont agree with the morals of Penn State University would get us time on every media outlet in the US.

I thought about this, as well, and the while I'm sure there would be a large financial impact to Ohio, it would send the right message.  By playing the game in order to avoid the financial impact would just be sending the message that we the money is more important that what happened (and what is wrong with college football).  I'm sure there would be several other penalties, too (would the Big Ten ever schedule another game with us?), but like you say it's the right thing to do and you can't put a financial tag on the national recognition from that.  It would be nice if their four non-conference opponents (Virgina, Temple and Navy) all did the same.  As a Navy season ticket holder, as well, I would be surprised to see a program of such honor play that game.

I've been away from the news today...but this strikes me as the most far-fetched thread in the history of this website.  Chance of game being cancelled would seem to be zero.

The point of the thread was not to debate if it should or shouldn't be, but to simply look at the options on the chance it would happen.  While it may be far-fetched, this story is unlike any to EVER hit the NCAA.  If you think the chances are zero then you are not understanding the impact of the siutation.

I fully understand the impact and I'm sure Monroe does too, and yet I'm with him in believing that the chances of this happening are pretty much zero (at least for this season). I kind of doubt Penn State receives any NCAA penalty and for them to receive a penalty that severe that soon I can't imagine. Again, to cancel the season or even a game at this point would hurt most the players and coaches who had nothing to do with the incident. And as others have said, this was an independent investigation, not one by any form of law enforcement or by the NCAA. It generally takes the NCAA a really long time to do their own investigation, which I'm pretty sure would have to happen before they handed out any penalties.

I don't think that threads on this board have ever been so constricted, so dedicated to one thought.  So, I think that my questioning the basic premise is legitimate.

I'll bet you $1000 that the game is played.

Why would I take that bet?  I never said the chances of it happening were high - I just said that the chances of it happening are greater than zero.  I wouldn't bet that it would happen, either.

I wouldn't think that if this did happen it would come at the hands of the NCAA.  I believe it would PSU themselves who conduct the penalty.

Then PSU would have to pay cancellation penalties through the nose.

What are the odds that with the calls for termination of the program and other distractions that we actually go into the game as the favorite to win?

(Yes I realize I just asked for odds on odds)
