I think at this point we have to consider the possibility of there being no game Sept 1 at Penn State.  This is unfortunate for Ohio in that this could be one of our most competetive teams in history, and losing the opportunity to win the only marquee game on our schedule would hurt any national rankings, but even as a Bobcat fan (and one with tickets to the game) I would completely understand wy the PSU season would be wiped out, and personally believe that it should be.

That being said, I took a look through the FBS schedules to see what options, if any, we would have should this situation present itself:

- All teams have 12 games scheduled, so even if someone isn't playing on 9/1 that option is out
- There are 11 teams on PSU's schedule that would be looking for a 12th game
- Nobody on PSU's schedule has a 9/1 opening
- Ohio's bye week is 10/20.  Only one team on PSU's schedule has a bye that week: Illinois.
- Illinois is scheduled at home for PSU, we're scheduled on the road.  Would be logical to think we could move our game to Illinois on 10/20?  How difficult would it be for the athletic departments to coordnate something like this so close to the season?

If the game is cancelled PSU remains responsible for the payout, right?

And I am sure the Hampton Inn-State College will let me have my $500 back for my hotel stay.

Personally I'd prefer that Penn State's season be cancelled starting September 2. The thought of us losing our opening game is upsetting. Even more upsetting is the thought of going through 12 weeks of football with no breaks (aside from late in the season when the week-night games result in irregularly sized weeks). If the NCAA cancels Penn State's season, we need to insist on every single penny included in the contract for cancellation and insist that they help us find a similar replacement. Alternatively, we take the Heisman vs. Cumberland College approach with Penn State.

There will be a game. As horrific as the crimes were the NCAA cannot rule a death penalty in this situation unless they really come up with something far fetched that proves what Sandusky did gave PSU football a competitive advantage over other programs.

If there is a game, and you do plan on attending, I would suggest getting a hotel room now.  It's going to be a media circus.

I don't see the NCAA making a decision of that magnitude by September, so this outcome will only happen if Penn State itself suspends its season. That is doubtful.

But I do think we owe Illinois some pain...

I would suggest if this was the case, that you travel back in time and get a hotel 6 months ago. cause i doubt there will be anything within a hour and a half driving distance from University Park that will be available.

But I seriously doubt, even if there was a death penalty given out before the game, that it would affect this year's schedule.  I feel like (although I may be wrong here) that the NCAA wouldn't forbid a team to play the next season when it's less than two months away.

But then again, you never know...

Hawai'i would also be a potential option 10/20 (not that I think this scenario is at all likely).

It might be the strangest college football game ever played. I have no idea what to expect from it. I do believe it will be played, however.

I'm thankful it's an early afternoon game so I didn't have to worry about getting a room.

Hawaii does have an open date on 10/20, but they already have 12 games scheduled.

Teams that play a game in Hawaii (including Hawaii) are allowed to play a 13th game under a rule to encourage teams to play regular season road games in Hawaii.
(I'm assuming that this rule is still in effect)

Why wait for the PSU fallout? Do we really want to play this game? What would happen if we backed out right now?

Yes, we want to play the game, or at the VERY least take our payday or find another suitable opponent step forward to fill that hole in the schedule (and the balance books).

I think it is highly unlikely that the game will be cancelled if, for any other reason, the NCAA will not conclude any investigation until well after the season has begun.  Any sanctions will likely not be imposed until the 2013 season.

If I were a PSU alum I'd be giving some serious thought to my continued support of the football program and would likely boycott the games until I was satisfied that the university was going to do the right thing..  The Bobcats could very well find themselves playing in a half-filled stadium on September 1.

It's arguable that the NCAA's jurisdiction doesn't extend to what happened at Penn St.  If you look at its mission statement, it talks about education and athletes:

The NCAA Mission: “Our mission is to be an integral part of higher education and to focus on the development of our student-athletes.”

The Sandusky scandal doesn't involve either.  If the NCAA were to try to penalize Penn St, they'd face a HUGE lawsuit on their jurisdiction, something they don't want.  The courts are the proper place for this to shake out, and you can bet that Penn St is going to lose a mountain of money in all the lawsuits coming up.  That's the proper penalty.  If the NCAA sticks its nose in, first it'll have to do it with EVERY school that has some kind of athletics dept scandal not related to athletics and education -- a can of worms they probably don't want to open -- and second they face the likelihood of having a revolt withing their ranks.  Remember, the NCAA is a voluntary membership organization; the only power it has is what its members give it.  They stray too far, and they might wind up without a constituency.

Penn State plays UVA the next week.  If Penn State had their season cancelled, we might be able to reconfigure the schedule such as playing UVA the last week in August and then each team taking the Penn State date as an off week.

If there was EVER a time I wish Frank Solich would take a page out of Steve Spurrier's playbook, it would be for this game if we happened to get out to a lead. Apart from deserving the book thrown at them from about 50 different directions legally, Penn State (and their lowlife fans) deserve to eat a crap sandwich every week of the season. Do they play Wisconsin this year? I hope Wisconsin puts 200 points on them if they do. I want every team to go Cobra Kai dojo on the Nittany Lions this year, honestly. And I want every cent that would go to the university or athletic department from their home games - every nickel - to go to charity. You want to play a game at all this year, Penn State? Fine, you're doing it pro bono.

What? You just contradicted yourself. Focus on our development of student athletes. Cant be done with a kid raper. End of arguement.

Absoluetly no reason they should be able to profit off football. Release all players from scholly immediately, without penalty. Allow them the option to play immediately elsewhere or sit out and retain that year of eligability.

I can't think of a better example of "loss of institutional control"

I would be shocked if the NCAA or Penn State itself cancels its football season. Will likely be a very weird atmosphere....I wouldn't be surprised of some empty seats, some fans/students boycotting/protesting ect......will be a media circus for sure-before, during and after the game. Good thing my assistant to the traveling secretary booked a room at a Ramada in State College a few months ago.

It doesn't really seem fair to wish this kind of ill will on the current players and coaches, who had absolutely nothing to do with what happened. For that same reason, I don't think there is any way Penn State does not play football this season. It would be a huge last-minute punishment against kids who just want to play football and get an education more than anyone else.

Random thought: if Penn State closes its football doors, be it forcefully or otherwise, for a couple years...can the big ten still have a champ game?

Think of the current PSU roster.  They are still locked in.  Canceling the season now, ~7 weeks prior to its start, likely means these players have no place to play in 2012.  Even if granted another year of eligibility, these players will lose a year of their football lives.  The NFL supplemental draft is behind us as well.

For comparison, SMU's death penalty was announced in late February.  Half the team transferred within 6 weeks.  These players had plenty of time to work their way in to another team.

On the other hand, if the NCAA doesn't enforce the penalty immediately it likely won't be done in 2013 either.  Penn State would have plenty of exposure this year to appeal to the court of public opinion for sympathy and will have distanced itself further from the crooks.

I've been away from the news today...but this strikes me as the most far-fetched thread in the history of this website.  Chance of game being cancelled would seem to be zero.
