It's a new church; they were (are) meeting in the Athena. And it's not like businesses are falling all over themselves to get on Court Street...

I figured that was the one moving in to the old Speciality store. I remember walking past the Athena on Sunday mornings and seeing some people gathered outside waiting for services to start. Hope it does well in its own location. I'll take a church in an old store over an empty storefront anyday.

Also, does anybody know what is going to happen to the space that Specialty Books used to occupy? When I went to Athens recently I noticed that Specialty was gone.

A church is going in.

Court St. is no place for Jeezo.

Is everyone forgetting that there is already a church at the corner of Court & Washington?

Although I would rather see another retail space there than another church.

Yes, but that is a REAL church, both historic and beautiful. Retail spaces converted to churches are the worst.

Judging the book by its cover.  Big mistake. Sometimes it is better to ...

I'm speaking strictly from an aesthetic point of view (which is of course subjective), they're obviously free to practice their religion however they want.

Are businesses really not that interested in locating on Court? I know there has been problems with the Woolworth's building but that is a big space, and I believe the former Burger King has tax issues. But I would think that there are plenty of businesses that would be interested in a Court St. location.

Interested, yes. Able to afford it, no. Woolworths is owned by the college book store lady, no? I believe the reason the space is (STILL!) empty is that she was never willing to budge on an obviously inflated price. Who wouldn't want (at least some of) that space?

Believe the University recently struck a deal for the Woolworts space.

That old Burger King has to have some major issues.  I was at OU from 2000-2004 and I remember when the BK closed.  The rumor then was that a Steak and Shake was going in.  Still sitting empty it sounds like.  It has a lower dining room area if I remember correctly.  I also seem to remember towards the end of its operation that it closed off the lower dining area.  To this day one of the best tasting Whoppers I ever had came from there following the completion of my 50 page report for a class.

Resigned with Russell. There goes my theory that the new store was going to sell authentic Under Armor jerseys.

Still excited to see what the new store is. College Book Store has done a great job producing clothing commemorating all of our recent milestones.

Don't forget Blue Gator, which has sat empty for years.

I was also there from 2000-2004, I can't believe the Burger King is STILL empty. I did a Journalism video package on the vacancy because it was such a mystery to people. But eight years later, still empty? Amazing.

Sad that Cross Court is changing. My then-GF, now-wife loved that store. Specialty was always the worst of the bookstores so that's not a shocker.

Stopped in the store over lunch today to buy a few gifts and asked about this. It is going to be a store that features exclusively Under-Armor gear. They hope to get it open by fall semester.

Construction going on there now though... I know the market has really picked up here in Philly (except in MH55's neighborhood I hear), looks like the market may be picking up in Athens too.

Not as cool as it could have been had we signed with Under Armor, but should still be a cool place.

"The House" sign is up. It's located directly across from College Bookstore next to a cafe. I was asking bartenders at Wild Wings - they hadn't even heard about it. I too saw the billboard back in May

Apparently it is an all Under Armour store. Great, one store for a bunch of over priced gear.

I really hope this does well for them.  The wrought iron front gate (if that really does exist) shown on the Facebook page couldn't have been cheap!

this is a very intriguing business venture, I would love to know the behind the scenes details.

What would compel a relatively young, but nationally known, sports apparel company to open a bricks and mortar flagship store in a small college town of a non AQ program that just resigned an apparel contract with another company? And the College Book Store is obviously a partner but to what extent and how deep are they committed? very interesting.

I would assume Under Armour  will come at the Russell contract like gangbusters when it opens up for rebid the next time.  Overpriced, but quality merchandise.  I will look to purchase an Under Amour OHIO logo polo shirt to match a UA polo shirt from my other alma mater William and Mary.

Small request - could we not use "UA" for Under Armour? It's too much of an Akron-nym.

IMHO, Athens is an ideal test market for what actual college students/alumni want versus the weekend warrior, wal-mart loving, adult natty drinking fans (ya know, buckeyes) want. Very exciting to have in Athens.
