Ohio's offense was never good that year, but did improve by mid-season. The same was true for Pitt. As far as being "torched" by Northwestern, Northwestern had a very good offense that year, and they scored 38 or more 6 times that year. Add in a no-show performance from the offense, with only 20 minutes of possession, and I'd be hard pressed to fault the defense too much in that game. I agree with your point, though, that the defense will have adjustments, too. No doubt the old rule applies "a team improves more between the first game and second, than at any other point".

LC...in your rankings CB Thomas and WR Smith are no longer on Penn State. I think we'll be seeing them in Herd green this year. They were kicked off prior to sanctions but are apparently still allowed to play this year.

There has also been a freshman transfer and CB Wallace is out for the year. Both reserves, but not a lot left in the DB for PSU, and that was expected to be their weak link anyway.

On the other hand, the most recent Messenger article makes it sound like Carrie could be out a long time (like the season) with a shoulder injury.  Really unfortunate news all around if that's true.

PSU fan here.  Certainly not trolling, so don't throw veggies.

Looking forward to the game on 9/1, like all of you are.  Will be in the stadium, and hopefully get a chance to tailgate with any Bobcat faithfull that make the trip..

Some points, after seeing your posts:
- We know about your team, and no one is overlooking you.  We respect Coach Solich and know he has the Bobcats at a high level.  Sorry, you might be overlooked by the casual fan, but not the serious fans, nor the coaches.  You are a good team, with a stud QB in a system that takes full advantage.  He accounted for 38 TDs last year.  Check.

- Every board has their fanatics.  I've identified yours.  I know ours.  The scandal has embarassed the entire alumni base.  It certainly isn't even over.  The team and program, what remains of it, are under a lot of scrutiny.  But we still have a team, and many of us are still supporting the players and coaches that had nothing to do with the scandal.  Hopefully you will see that support.  We'll ignore your trolls if you ignore ours.  Contrary to what some believe, the entire state of PA was not complicit in this matter.

- On the field, we are a great unknown.  New coaching staff, loss of much of our high profile players.  From the 2011 team, we return only 2 starters on offense, 5 on defense, and lost the ST players.  So of the 24 ... we return 7.  Experience and cohesiveness is not a strength.  But for the most part, we have talented kids who are embracing their chance to step up.  Finding playmakers will be the challenge.

- Off the field, I can offer:
- give yourself plenty of time for getting to the game.  Traffic will be horrible, it always is.
- get a parking pass now, from the ticket office.  They charge you $40 on game day to park in fields very far away from the stadium.  Your advance pass won't get you closer, but it will be easier on the wallet.
- read the tailgating rules.  No charcoal grills.  You are mainly in grass lots, so fire is bad.

Typically love the fans that travel, and look forward to sharing drinks with the Bobcat fans.  And good luck.

Agreed, nice post MD. Hopefully both the game and the BB talk can remain civil. I've been looking forward to this game, and this season, since early last season, when I thought it'd be a pretty close game even before the scandal/sanctions  broke. Should be a fun way to open the season (from my living room, can't afford to make this trip)

I ran across this short clip today of a PSU scrimmage.  The production quality isn't quite what we're used to, but I do offer them credit for using fast-forward editing to give the illusion of a quick offense.  It looks like they have some trouble keeping the RBs contained, even though they seem to get tripped up on first touch.  The D-line looks awfully soft, DBs can't tackle in open field, and the whole team seems to be incredibly flat for a game-like scrimmage.

To me the big thing is that this is will be Penn State's first game with a new system. Think back to 2005 - Ohio's defense picked up the new defense a lot faster than the offense did, which is normal. The same was true for Pitt. The result was a low scoring game that was up for grabs.

I think think this game will be similarly low scoring. I expect Penn State's defense will be ahead of their offense. In addition, based on what I saw, that seems to be where their talent is concentrated.

Remember that Ohio and Pitt just plain didn't have very good offenses that year. Also remember that was game 2. Both defenses were torched in their openers, Pitt by ND and Ohio by Northwestern.

The main reason the D got torched was because the O was mostly absent that game.  Ohio scored 14, and 7 came when Dion Byrum picked off a pitch on a NW option and took it to the house.  He had three of Ohio's first four TDs that year.

yeah, the offense wasn't very productive that day, but Northwestern put the game away by halftime.

That's funny because it was produced by the PSU Sports Information Department.  They'll appreciate your critique.

As for your thoughts, we don't really know to argue.  Practices are more open than before, but with so many new faces in new places, we won't know everything until 9/1.

What we do know ...
- The starting RB is a converted WR.  He's quick but isn't a typical PSU power runner.
- Our DL and LB are the strength of the team, with preseason All Big Ten types on each group.  If the DL looks soft, I will be happy because the OL must be coming together.
- DBs are a question mark.  We have some injuries in an already shallow group.  We'll be playing true freshmen. The starters may be on light contact to reduce injury risk (I hope).

We are not where we'll be after six games.  New players, new staff, new system.  An experienced team like the Cats definitely wants to get the Lions right out of the gate.

If you see a flagpole with a Crab flag and the flag of Maryland, stop in for a drink.

Don't take it as too much of a knock -- we're a bit spoiled with our head video guy being a multi-Emmy award winner who wraps up our games on Saturday night, then flies to shoot for NFL films on Sunday, and he's backed by a number of students from a very strong video/television production program.

I had that very same thought last night. Always better to get teams with new systems before they have a chance to gel under in-season conditions.

I think you have to be careful trying to draw any conclusions from that PSU film. Considering it's just highlights, you can't really tell a lot. If they look a little soft, it's probably because they are still adjusting to a new system, but with each practice, and each scrimmage, they will have more comfort with what they are trying to do.

Wow, what a horrible job of sports writing. Unbelievable. Here's the actual interview. If all you did was read that article, you'd think McGloin actually thought he was nearly as good as Brady, rather than that he was making  a joke.

12 days to go ...

The Big Ten Network had their road show on campus today.  Will air tonight I think.  But a write up is at the link:

http://btn.com/2012/08/20/dienhart-penn-state-still-has-some-talent/

All of these team reviews are upbeat and intended to paint the team's upsides.  But like I said before, if you pin me down to three concerns about this team, they would be:

1. Who will emerge as the offensive playmakers?
2. Can the inexperienced defensive backfield step up?  The front seven is good and experienced.
3. Can the team stay healthy until some depth can be brought along?

and of course ...

Can the Penn State Blue Band and the Ohio Marching 110 both entertain the crowd on a hot Summer day?  Be warned, if our Drum Major nails his flip, its going to be a long day for the Bobcats (of course, he nailed it against Alabama last year and look how that helped).

From what I've seen in four practices (one scrimmage), the spread should be higher.  Hate to say it, but the focus and energy of last year's camp isn't there this year.  Our WRs run sloppy routes, we have had many, many miscues on the offensive side, our power back hasn't played in two weeks and the heart and soul of our D is out for the year.  I hope I'm wrong, but I am expecting a slow start to the year.

Super Beef  your insight is pragmatic.  Entirely different circumstances, but this game reminds me somewhat of another highly touted team that went into HV but wasn't quite ready.

Was last year's senior class that focused or is this year's team reading their press clippings too much?

Practice this week was reportedly more "spirited" than last Saturday, after the day off.  So that's good news.
