Just saw this on a news alert from the Messenger.  Not sure how he's getting here but if you've ever seen one of these motorcades in person, they can cause some traffic issues.

Vice President Joe Biden will be in Athens this weekend, according to a spokeswoman for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign in Ohio.

On Saturday, Biden will attend an event at the Athens Community Center. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

Geez, Alan, why don't you just roam campus in a sandwich board reading, "Don't attend the game; too much traffic!"

You're worse than McKinney. :)

This has nothing to do with not attending the game and everything to do with being able to get there.  It's not like I was saying they've discovered the bubonic plague in Athens or that there has been an outbreak of the West Nile virus.  I was simply giving folks a heads up that they may want to plan a little extra time in getting here.  Tough night in Akron, huh?

I knew you were but this site needs a little "action" right now plus there's nothing happening on the volleyball board.  Now McKinney's typhoon prediction, that's another story.

Great.  I was already pushing it because I have to work in Columbus until 4.  But now this?  Looks like I'll be a bit late.  What a nuisance, haha.

Alan, since I know you'll be attending this Biden event, why don't you ask him if the rumor is true that he once played at Peden with the Blue Hens.  I know he was on the Delaware football team once upon a time and I know in that general era Ohio played a home and away series with the Blue Hens.  What I don't actually know for sure is if he was actually on the team when they came to Athens, bobcatattack.com rumors notwithstanding.  Just because you hear it on this board doesn't actually make it true.

When Biden spoke here 4 years ago, he said he played in Peden Stadium and also mentioned he got kicked out of a women's dorm when men weren't allowed there.

According to the Delaware Media Guide, he never earned a Varsity Letter.  If he played in Peden, it would have been a Freshman Game in 1961.  The Varsity Game that year was played in Delaware in 1961 with Ohio winning 17-16.  The schools did not meet in 1962 which was Biden's sophomore year.

Biden's College Years from his Wiki Page:   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Biden

Biden attended the University of Delaware in Newark, where he was more interested in sports and socializing than in studying,[10] although his classmates were impressed by his cramming abilities.[15] He played halfback with the Blue Hens freshman football team,[14] but he dropped a junior year plan to play for the varsity team as a defensive back, enabling him to spend more time with his out-of-state girlfriend.[14][17] He double majored in history and political science and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1965,[1] ranking 506th of 688 in his class.[18]

He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Syracuse University's College of Law in 1968,[19] where by his own description he found it to be "the biggest bore in the world" and pulled many all-nighters to get by.[15][20] During his first year there, he was accused of having plagiarized 5 of 15 pages of a law review article. Biden said it was inadvertent due to his not knowing the proper rules of citation, and he was permitted to retake the course after receiving a grade of F, which was subsequently dropped from his record.[

Biden's event is scheduled for 3:30 and should be done by 4:30, I would guess.  That's more than 2 hours before kickoff, plus it's on the other side of town -- the community center is on East State near where the airport used to be.  I doubt it'll have much of an impact on game traffic.

Glad to hear it.  On that note, this will be my first time coming down 33 (first time in Peden NOT with the 110).  If I'm leaving the west side of Columbus around 4:30, how long should I expect it to take?

Wait, there used to be an airport on East State near the Community Center? When was this?

Any locals have an idea when the Nelsonville bypass will be completed? Regardless, can't come soon enough.

Interestingly enough, there is an article on the front page of today's messenger that says completion date is set for October 18, 2013.  The first phase is set to open November 26th of this year which will be on the western end and dump you out on a traffic circle on the Columbus side of Nelsonville.  You'll still have to drive through town until next year.

It has been a couple years since I have made that trip with any degree of regularity, but I've done it from Clintonville/campus area in about 1:20 at my fastest....usually closer to 1:30. The west side shouldn't be much, if any, longer than that.

Up until the early or mid '80s.  I realized later that I should have said near the HIX (Holiday Inn eXpress).  The airport itself was down where the Athens Mall and the Walmart are now.  I still think of that area as the old airport.

Any chance Biden swings by Peden to watch a little football?

I know they won't announce that sort of thing for security reasons, but it is difficult to find 24,000 people in the same place in SE Ohio. He has a Sunday morning event in Portsmouth...so I doubt he is flying out Saturday. He must be staying somewhere between Athens and Portsmouth, Saturday night.

That's a bit disappointing. I was hoping for something a lot sooner (man, I hate driving thru Nelsonville). Oh well, I've waited over 3 decades. I guess I can wait another year.

You're talking about that airport out by Heck's, right?
