On offense, we will be fine. Last year, their NFL defensive end was manhandled by our tackles and almost a complete nonfactor the entire game. They are gone, but the new tackles are doing a fine job. Marshall's defensive line is not what it was last year. We win that battle. Our offense will take advantage of the matchups with their line and backers, as the backers are converted safetys (safeties?) Some of our outside runs may be taken back a little because of their speed, but use option, screens, draws, play action to keep them honest. I think downhill running will be where we make our bacon though. Passing, our line will give Tettleton time to get the ball to his recievers. After another week under their belts, they are coming along nicely, but still some errors that are correctable. We'll definantly score points.
Defensively, I'm a bit concerned. Our secondary started off the past two games playing soft coverage to not give up big plays. The trouble is, New Mexico State beat us deep a few times and had wide open touchdowns go away because of errant throws. I don't think Cato does that if he gets time, which brings me to my next point. Defensive line is doing better to get pressure, but we need to get in the backfield early and rattle the cages. Hit him every time that it's possible, and hit him hard. Make Cato uncomfortable to wait for his recievers to get open, force him to beat us with his feet. While he's a very mobile QB, I'll take a scramble over deep passes every time. Our linebcakers are coming along well too, but they'll need an A game for this one.
Special teams... we really need to improve. The kicking game needs to get better and our returners need to play smart about whether or not to return the ball. We were lucky not to start deep in our territory a few times last week.
Coaching- Coach Solich has proven on several occasions that he's the best coach in the MAC, and one of the best in the country especially with in game adjustments. Doc Holliday has talent, but he hasn't really done a lot with it. (I'll concede their schedule to an extent.)
Prediction: Make no mistake, Marshall's offense is good. It's probably one of the better ones we'll see this season, though I'd take Dysert over Cato. They're going to move the ball on our defense, they're going to score. The key will be to hold them to kicking field goals rather than scoring touchdowns. I think our gameplan is going to be similar to what we saw at Penn State: control the game early and take command later. We're going to force them into mistakes, and make them pay dearly for it.
