Oh come on guys. We have one of the most welcoming fanbases in college football. I tailgated with several WCU fans yesterday that stayed there and went out friday night and they said, and i quote, "I have been to alot of places and you guys are by far the nicest fanbasr i have ever dealt with. Even bought us beers last night and wished us luck".

I have heard nothing but that from every fan from every opposing team i have seen at the joan, other than WVU.

And for whoever said Marshall isn't a mqrquee opponent, you had a record crowd at Peden last year because of us, and I view Ohio as a rival and a "must see" game, even in athens. And MU took at least 5,000 to Peden last year, with low expectations for the team. With you having your best team ever, i would hope that you could bring at least that much!.

And if you are afraid for some reason, come tailgate with me, ill make sure no one ruffles your feathers.

Here's a stadium review from hopefully a more credible source for you guys.

http://www.stadiumjourney.com/stadiums/joan-c.-edwards-stadium-s423

And I'll highlight a part inparticular for you all.

Fans 5

I can't say enough nice things about the fans. Extremely polite fans who offered food and beer from their tailgates, moved out of the way for me to take pictures, etc. During the lightning delay, when everyone had to gather on the concourse, the conversations were friendly and people made room for others without being asked to move. Definitely one of the nicest fan bases I have ever encountered.

Also as mentioned above, I was impressed with how many showed up to begin with, and even more so with how many stayed after the long delay in the pouring rain. The University should be proud of their fans.

Also lightly went through some reviews on the CUSA board. And came up with all these.

Marshall will always bring a large crowd to Athens because your fan base has very few options that have such a close proximity to Huntington. It frustrates me to that Ohio does not travel well to Marshall. Southwest Ohio fans go to Miami, northeast Ohio fans will catch cats at Kent.

I have never had a problem with Marshall fans. I also don't buy the I am not going because someone hurt my feelings the last time. Suck it up. If we send our team down there to do battle thence as fans need to step up and follow. This rivalry is not going away so people need to get on board. Geography works for Marshall because it is desperate for a drivable games for a fan base that loves to travel but can't like it used to because of the whacked out geography of conference USA. Ohio loves it because it gives of a great non conference rival that sells tickets and puts money in the bank.

If someone is choosing not to go because of a bad past experience I would like you to reconsider. And if you do go, follow my lead and take your car flags and magnets of your car once you have parked.

Here is their review of Peden.

If I'm objective, I'd say that's fair.

Oh good, we get another week of your stupid virtual face in our house.

Because you're stupid, we'll explain this again: 99% of Ohio alumni do not live in Athens and are therefore not a 2 hour drive away. This is because an Ohio education allows people to spread out and get jobs anywhere. And because we're educated and can provide ourselves a worthwhile life, football is not be all, end all of our lives. Sure, many of us like football a great deal, but it's not the most important thing. You'll have to forgive me for not rearranging my life to travel across the country for a game in a place where I don't even feel entirely safe visiting (and I live in a city known for its crime problems).

And, again, none of this incredibly lame away attendance smack talk does nothing to change the fact our team is better than yours and will probably win in your decrepit excuse of a city this weekend. Maybe if your own awesome fans showed up, you wouldn't need us to pick up your slack.

Now make yourself useful.

It should have nothing to do with your fans living away from Athens. All within driving distance in a short amount of time with Cleveland being the farthest on a 4.5 hour drive.
To Huntington, WV
Columbus Oh, 135 miles 2 hour drive
Cincinnati Oh, 151 miles 2 to 2.5 hour drive
Dayton Oh, 168 miles 2.5 to 3 hour drive
Akron Oh, 241 miles 3.5 to 4 hour drive
Cleveland Oh, 277 miles 4 to 4.5 hour drive

No reason you guys shouldn't be able to bring a 1,000 fans or more next week to watch one of your better teams you've had in awhile.

We send thousands to the ECU game and its between 8 & 9 hours away.  Huntington to Morgantown is 2.5 hours away and thousands of Herd fan's make that trip.   Louisville is 3 to 3.5 hours away and we sent a few thousand to that game last year.  There are a ton of Herd fans heading to Purdue later this year and its 5 hours from Huntington.

If you can't handle a 2 to 3 hour drive to watch your team play football then I don't know what to tell ya.

Based on the attendance, the review was based on the 2010 Buffalo game, where the Bobcats led 27-7 early in the third quarter over a bad Buffalo team. That might explain why fans weren't that excited about the game itself.

I don't want to hear about your sending fans to places.

You couldn't sell out your own allotment to the WVU game, which is supposedly your biggest rival -- the only other DI school in the state, the great Coal Bowl, and you can't sell your allotment. The last Coal Bowl possibly ever and you don't sell your own share of tickets.

Louisville? It's probably 3.5 hours, a straight shot across 64. People traveled there because they have no close away conference games to go to.

You travel well to ECU? Probably because that's your CLOSEST conference rival. Your crap school thought it was an intelligent to move to a conference where you play UTEP in mid-week games two time zones away. Your fans can't possibly travel to locations where your team plays. Of course they're going to go to ECU when it's one of their biggest conference rivals and the closest one (eight hours away).

What's up with the 6:30PM start time?  Strange.

This game will not be televised so MU is trying the old comprise for the fan base. Early afternoon starts are great for the out of town fan base to be be able to get to the game and get home at a decent hour. These fans complain about the 7:00 or 7:30 PM starts. The season ticket holders with kids involved in youth activities like the late starts so they can attend the game.

With no TV for this game, The beat writer for MU in the Charleston newspaper is expecting 30,000 for the game since there seems to be more interest in the fan base in regards to this game. OU doesn't travel well to MU so if OU exceeds the usual 400-500 traveling fans, the attendance could be higher. Disclaimer. the weather can be a factor.

And here is the rest of the story. This year MU would only sell tickets to Big Green members for this game. For past games, MU sold tickets to the entire fan base.  MU has a lot of season ticket holders that do not contribute to the Big Green Club and the AD was trying to increase donations. MU could have sold out its allotment without this rule. This new rule really did not go over well with a lot of fans.

I will be absolutely shocked if we have less than 1,000 fans make the trip.  Remember, a lot of Ohio fans sit in spots other than the usual visitor sections when we come to Marshall.  And, to defend Marshall fans a little bit, I understand why they didn't gobble up the tickets to WVU.  I have heard some stories about fans being treated poorly on the road, but WVU takes the cake with their treatment of Marshall and Pitt fans.  This year, WVU's student section started a chant about the plane crash.  Who would want to go into that environment?

Wow....really surprised at some of the sentiment coming from Ohio fans toward MU fans. I'm really shocked at the number of Ohio fans claiming  to have had a bad experience in Huntington on game day. We are far from having that kind of reputation. You might get some of that in Morgantown, WV but you will NOT get that here in Huntington just like you don't get that in Athens. I'm at every game and regularly tailgate with Ohio fans and others that come down to the game.

You have two options....come to the game and have a good time or stay at home and believe some of the false stories that are circulating in this thread. It's up to you.

For those of you that come down, have a safe trip and be sure to stop by some of the tailgates. There will be some festivities going on downtown during the day (Chilifest) that will benefit the Ronald McDonald house along with some entertainment across the street from the stadium at the "City National Bank" lot a couple hours before game time. Here is the link to the ChiliFest.    www.chilifestwv.com/

The primary reason we didn't sell our allotment to the WVU is because our fans are sick and tired of the crap treatment we get when we go up there. Va Tech will tell you the same as will LSU and others. I went up there twice and I'll never go back. There is a reason they call it "Morganhole".

Louisville.....we sold out our allotment and according to the Louisville fans we had one of the largest visiting crowds to visit Cardinal stadium. Real Ohio fans can witness to how we travel....we sold out our allotment when we went to Peden last year and we'll sell it out next year.

WeAre...

I know you traveled well to Louisville. I'm saying you did because it was a close option when your other road game options include Rice, Houston, UTEP, Southern Miss., UAB, etc. Louisville then looks like a road game at Cabell Midland compared to that.

Not amongst MAC fans you aren't.  I've been to most MAC stadiums and the worst I got was good natured ribbing.  In Huntington I sat near some really nice fans but had two bad experiences walking by some tailgaiters.   One guy started screaming expletives at us.  My crowd was all adults but there was a family (Marshall fans) with small children walking right in front of us.   Then on the way out a full beer was thrown at us (luckily the guy wasn't a very good shot).   Again the majority of the fans there treated us well but you've got more than your share of idiots and it's the idiots that define the experience.  My brother (a Miami grad) nearly got in a fight with a heckler in the stadium when he went there. All fanbases have their idiots but there are way too many stories similar to mine in Huntington.   Not being as bad as WVU just isn't good enough.

As for all these glowing stadium reviews, I'm guessing reviewers didn't attend the game with the visiting teams jersey.

Also... Huntington is closer to you all more than ANY other school in the MAC.

And while you all can get on here and make excuses about it being FAR from your "jobs", you have 35,000 students and 17,000 UNDERGRADS who could be making the trip. Reach out to them to come to the game, offer them tickets, a $5 bus... whatever it takes.

No, I never said that... I am saying however, that it has never happened to you at another MAC stadium because no one cares enough there.

Someone obviously did that because they care about Marshall football... it is a vile, dirty, chickenshit move to do to someone... but when you go somewhere that they could care less about what team you support as long as they get to watch $5 football on a weekday night... it's whatever to them.

Once again, I am so sorry that it happened to you.. I've been on the recieving end of it as well, it's degrading, and if I ever saw anyone do that to another fan here, I would personally address the situation.

There is no room for that in college football.

Comparitively speaking that would be like saying "I've been to hundreds of arena football games and never been yelled at, cussed at, or even acknowledged.... why can't you all act like that?"

It's all over.

You win, Marshall.

You win the fan war.

Anybody who says that the Marshall campus is "really beautiful" does not have much credibility IMHO. But that's just my take and there are many worse in the MAC.
