Did he ever get a signed contract? Could that possibly be the issue?

Yes, contract was signed. That's not the issue.

Have to imagine it’s something fairly substantial, because they won’t be playing a bowl game for several weeks so there’s no reason to announce something unless they plan on him missing it. Even then - they could simply announce he wasn’t coaching a few days prior, due to XYZ.

Hopefully nothing serious health wise with him or his family.

And hopefully not a scandal brewing.

Did he drive drunk down a one-way street?

There was a thread a while back with the title "Worrying Situation" -- the contents of which were deleted for violating board posting policy. Basically, a poster passed on a bunch of second hand rumors about personal life things re: Smith and suggested something along these lines would happen.

I don't remember the details and the post didn't have enough details to make anything clear anyhow.
I do remember that now that you mention it, good call.

The timing, just like Albin and his diseased dog, is just too suspicious. There isn't a week on the calendar more juicy for coaching changes than right now as we sit. Would be quite a coincidence to have some personal and/or health matter pop up right now, the "black Monday" of college football.

He is an extremely Pacific guy in every way, I honestly have never heard the story how he ended up at Ohio. He may also have decided he doesn't love the head gig. I wouldn't be surprised if he is entertaining various Coordinator options, and perhaps our new AD wanted to place him on leave while that is going on?

All purely theorizing...

I suspect it's about Smith's conduct.

The posts at the time were about Smith's personal life, and were unsubstantiated rumors. They were taken down for violating the board's policy, but first were deleted by the original poster who was upset we didn't hoist him onto our shoulders and parade him down Court Street like he was some sort of hero for passing on rumors about something he heard about the football coach.

Could be, and the timing could suggest they were putting up with it to get thru the season and now want to conduct a thorough investigation of sorts?

Or, they just became aware of it. Or something they were aware of is now substantiated and required action. Wouldn't surprise me if the timing's purely coincidental. If they could control the timeline, why not wait until the season's over altogether?

To me, put on leave sounds like a university decision as opposed to him taking leave if he had a health issue.

This will be interesting but it does piss me off (unless he has health or family issues). Portal opens in January and we have young men like Levi coming in with ridiculous stats and playing for a State title Friday.

2 of my good Athens buddies told me the same story a few minutes ago. Neither were around taking a new gig. Don't want to entertain the rumor out of respect for Smith and Family.

Had to re-read the brief statement.

Head Coach Brian Smith will be on leave for an undetermined period of time beginning December 1.

The way it's worded is very imporant.

"will be on leave" sounds more voluntary / personal choice as opposed to be "put or placed on leave" which is more of a directive by some authority. Of course there are always exceptions.

I get why they made the choice to put Hauser in that position as the team has to get prepared for whatever bowl game they will be in.

That's exactly what I'm thinking.

"will be on leave" sounds like Smith himself made the decision. Otherwise, again, reporters would've just come out and said "Ohio U. has placed Smith on administrative leave".

Wrong Again. I deleted the Post myself after a Childish Wisecrack. I never posted Any NAMES and it’s interesting that folks want to circle the Wagons on Certain Behaviors by Certain Individuals but others it’s all free game to speculate on their Off Field activities . Prayers for The innocent victims who are caught in the middle of a horrific situation!

Buddy recruiting has been FUBAR for awhile. In case you hadn’t noticed The Legacies wondering what’s going on with Ohio Football Recruiting. But I have connections ON STAFF and they consistently throw up there hands in frustration when we talk. Take that rumor to the bank.

Cool. Looking forward to you being added to the list of distinguished Ohio University alumni. What category would this fall under? Charitable giving?

Look at how ESPN worded their article.

"Ohio puts Smith on indefinite leave, Hauser named interim"

"Ohio Bobcats coach Brian Smith has been placed on leave for undisclosed reasons, and defensive coordinator Jon Hauser has taken over on an interim basis."

I don't get it. The offical statement by Ohio Athletics was one sentence saying he "will be on leave for an undetermined time". Why do they assume he was placed on leave? Do they have more information?

Well, in that case, I guess you had to post publicly about the private lives of OU employees. I stand corrected. Didn't realize you were just conducting a civic duty.
