Have you not heard of the SI cover curse? Why would we want to be on the cover.
Though I'm generally not a superstitious person, I don't want to see a cover story until we win that BCS bowl game. That Walter Luckett cover, which I still have, is kind of a haunting reminder of promises not fulfilled.

New SI is out today. Has anyone had a chance to read it yet? Is there a story on our beloved Ohio Bobcats?

Have you not heard about our eye patch?

I have a feeling an eyepatch smilie would win any sort of poll we did for a new smilie contest.

Haha - I already messaged Ryan suggesting exactly that.

No.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/cover/toc/11854/index.htm

To be fair though, most magazines have articles written 3-4 weeks before it goes to print and thats after taking maybe a week to research and write it. Granted its a weekly magazine but since it came out 2 days ago and he was only in Athens, what? Last week? I'd say we wont see it for a few more weeks and if we lose in the mean time it might not get run at all.

Arkley said it would be 2 issues before it would be out, so look for it next issue.

I see. Good to know. Although the SI.com site shows a different cover than the DeAnthony Thomas one you posted. It has a Washington/Baltimore baseball cover at the bottom of the home page.

And the Chicago Tribune is showing Notre Dame's Manti Te'o on the 10/1 cover.

Actually, the approach of SI is probably the best shot print has of surviving. They paid for a well-trained journalist to spend a lot of time doing original research, then paid even more for him to work with editors and researchers to make something that is going to be pretty different from something you'd see in Bleacher Report.

I get that you're eager to see the story and you want to see it NOW because you heard it was being developed. It's not time-sensitive, and doing it the right way doesn't make SI obsolete.

The reason journalism is struggling in this country is not a print versus online debate. It's because everyone's reading and no one's paying and ad revenues aren't even close to making up for the death of classifieds.

Yep. Something to be said for putting in the time and effort to give a piece texture and feeling, as opposed to, say, a Bleacher Report blog (EDIT: I swear I didn't notice the comparison in your post -- at least consciously).  Nothing to do with online vs. print -- there are a number of online outlets that do great, in-depth work, and obviously plenty of print that doesn't.

This article is more "Relentless" as opposed to "raw video of the press conference post-game."  They both have their place, and one takes a bit longer to develop.

Agreed.  The only print that will survive will be longform. The New Yorker, Esquire, Vanity Fair, The NY Times. The Economist. Print journalism has never been better at those places and it's never been worse at places with ridiculous daily deadlines and massive understaffing. (Same is true online, though. Ninety percent is awful, and there are a handful of wonderful places to read sports.)

If this SI story runs, it will be one of those stories we all save and read 10 years from now. If Anderson wrote it in two days, it'd be rehashing what everyone else has already done. It'd be disposable wire copy.

Interesting list of "survivors" and I agree with the premise.  It's worth noting, however, that the NY Times runs one of the best news(paper) websites I've seen.  It's worth it to me to subscribe to the print edition to get the complete online version.  Surely, the former props up the latter but why have other papers (see: Columbus Dispatch) failed so miserably at this transition?

SI has a pretty sweet digital edition, too, that includes all the ink but goes well beyond it with daily online only features (like Peter King's MMQB).

L.A. Times was a terrific paper before the financial crisis.  Now the newshole must be about 60% less than what it was.  There used to be long artciles ('takeouts') leading from the front page to 4, 5, 6 pages inside the front section...or that much volume in a series for each of 3-4 days..  Now their takeouts go to half a page on the inside of the front section.  It's a good paper now, no better.

I got a good laugh out of the NY Times declaring college bars dead the other day after visiting a number of schools where you would expect bars to thrive, like Cornell.

College bars are not dead.

As I was drinkin my 36 ounce Yuengling mega-mug a few weeks ago an elderly gentleman (about as old as me) couldn't believe the price was $2.50 and he declared....."Damn....I wish I was in college again."

From this week's SI Magazine (arrived today)|

"Mid-major moment.
Ohio University has one of the clearest shots in the country-and certainly the clearest shot among non-AQ teams-at an undefeated season.  But while the Bobcats were coasting past Norfolk State on Saturday, the rest of the conference showed off its depth.  Central Michigan beat Iowa, Western Michigan beat UConn, Ball State beat South Florida, N. Illinois beat Kansas, Akron put a three-quarter scare into Tennessee and E. Michigan hung on for three quarters against No. 21 Michigan State.  It'll be a shame, from an entertainment standpoint, to see those wacky MAC teams start beating up on each other rather than playing David against all those AQ Goliaths."

Ithaca, NY is actually a pretty big party town because it is home of two colleges. Ithaca College and Cornell.  They are on opposite hills in the city and it creates a great college town scene.

Very OT, but a related story of when my young professional friend and I were back in Athens and at a bar around 2pm, conversation went like this:

Him:  Can I get a pitcher of Bud Light?
Bartender: Yeah sure that will be $6.50.
Him: What?!?!
Bartender (In a rude tone): Yeah man, the $4.00 pitchers don't start until 4pm.
Him: No no no, thats not what I meant...

Last time SI did an article on Ohio football (I think) it was the lead in to the weekly wrapup on college football, but they did not do regular weekly feature articles then. 44 years ago.  Wow.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1148048/index.htm

I still have the magazine, btw.

Anyone know when this is going to be published? I just got my October 8 issue on the mail (Ed Hochuli on the cover) and our feature still isn't in there.

I think it's one they'll sit on. If Ohio is threatening to become a BCS buster, it will have national interest. Otherwise, a feature on a 9-3  or 10-2 MAC football really isn't going to be something you're going to put in a national magazine.

They had the SI writer on the Norfolk St. pre-game show and he said it could take 2-3 weeks. I would think next week.
