I don't generally think it's good form to slam the poor attendance of losing teams (would you go out in rainstorms to watch a winless team?), but I think that EMU has incurable problems in terms of fan support. Even if they were winning, they wouldn't draw many fans. They live almost literally in the shadow of Michigan, so it's not like many casual fans and non-students/alumni from the area are ever going to EMU for their college sports fix. They also have a lot of commuter students. Commuters rarely have time or interest to form a bond with their school, let alone its sports teams. Of all the MAC schools, their situation seems the most hopeless. That's saying something.

Akron at Ohio - 25,542
Miami at BGSU - 17,071
Buffalo at NIU - 14,419
WMU at Ball St. - 14,192
Toledo at EMU - 2,837

-------------------

Navy at CMU (Friday) - n/a
Kent at Army - 30,022

Overall pretty good numbers for the conference games, save EMU.
I know the weather sucked in Michigan, but seriously? Every other MAC school has more than 2,800 sold in season tickets to count toward every week's total.

It's fine, next year they'll give 20K tickets/week away to a homeless shelter that will artificially make their 2 year average over the minimum needed for 1-A (15,000)

Coming off last season you'd've thought EMU would have had some push in attendance.  But with Mich playing at home today, maybe it was more attractive to tailgate outside the Big House.

I thought CMU probably had 12,000-15,000 there last night.  The seats inside the 20s were sparsely populated but they had a pretty full house between the 20s.

Probably more due to the fact that it's Army, than for EMU.

And Mich is even playing at home today.  Any Army bases in the area?

I'm curious to see how many people Kent draws for their Homecoming game today against Western Michigan.  They were hoping for a sellout.

Akron only had 7,000 for their game vs. NIU.

God that is depressing. This is what makes the Mid American Conference look so bush league. I wish these jokers would take the hint and drop to 1-AA

EMU pride?  I'm not that familiar with the school, but judging from this article it's largely a commuter school.

16,128.  At least 9,191 empty seats (approx. 36%).

And some more from the Plain Dealer:

Bad news I: Kent State (6-1, 4-0) and its fans, should be prepared for a big shock come bowl season. Only 16,128 fans showed up at homecoming for a winning team featuring a star player (Dri Archer) getting national attention. Making matters worse, the bulk of the crowd left at halftime, making the chances of landing in a nearby bowl (Detroit) or a bowl in a sexy location (New Orleans) slim.

Even having a star player, which bowls covet to lure TV ratings, can't overcome a lack of fans, which bowls covet even more to turn a profit.

Wow!  I know Kent typical draws well for basketball but football's another story I guess.

Spot on.

I simply cannot find any upside for EMU.  Even if they are cranking out 9-3 teams every year, I just don't see them stamping out a market in the shadow of the Big House.  If we were in the shadow of the horseshoe, I'd say we didn't have any upside either.

They don't really draw well for basketball either.
