At the level this program has climbed to, there are some issues that I cannot understand why they still exist on a regular basis.
1. Special Teams: An absolute train wreck. The punter/long snapper combination is the worst I have ever seen in Peden Stadium. It was not just last night. It's been like that all year. I was willing to give Grant a pass because he is a Freshman, but 10 games into the season, the punt team should not be getting worse. I hate the formation, the blocking schemes, the inconsistency of the snaps and the time it takes him to catch, then get rid of the ball. I am shocked every single time a punt escapes a block.
2. Play calling: The team clearly has the ability to run a good offensive series. They have had a lot of strong drives, that are immediately followed up with conservative, predictible plays. If I can call out the plays before they happen, then they surely aren't going to fool the other team. They act like a 7-0 1st Quarter lead is enough to win the game. Until the play calling is more aggressive with the intention of blowing teams out, they will continue to play from behind. I've never understood the switch to bubble screens and predictible runs as the game goes on. In the 4th Quarter last night, Tyler was obviously furious at the play calling from the sideline. He motioned with his hands to throw the ball downfield instead of the 2 yard pass plays they kept sending in. Maybe it was because Foster was hurt, but Cochran has the speed to still get behind the defense downfield. If the team is not going to throw the ball downfield, there is no reason for the defense to play that. It eventually kills the running game, too.
3. Tackling: The defense seems to make the first hit early, yet not be able to wrap up the guy and bring him to the ground. I have not seen the stat, but yards-after-contact has to be sky high. I'm not sure if it's fundamentals or strength, but it is frustrating to see a lot of 2 yd losses turned into 5 yd gains. I know there are a ton of injuries on the defensive side of the ball, but tackling should be a basic skill set at the D1 level. I understand if a less experienced player is out of position because they aren't used to the scheme, but once they are at the point of attack, they should be able to finish the tackle.
I wonder where the swagger went. The players and coaches have lost it. We could be watching a team that started 7-0 finish 8-4 if these issues aren't fixed. I think the effort and desire to win are there, but the execution is not. I've never been a bandwagon fan, but I can understand a lot of those that are getting off right now. I was told that Kent State cut us off on the free tickets to the game on the 23rd because our fans had grabbed so many. I wonder how many of those tickets go unused now.
