I remember reading a thread about this a while ago so I started doing some digging. 

This is from 2000, but if we have the drawings to add the second tier of stands, my guess is a lot of the background work is done as far as feasibility goes and engineering. Would save the University money if they decided to pursue this.

Youngstown State built a new stadium in the 1980's. It seated 17,000 and had only one side. They wanted to expand but needed justification to add the second side of stands.
They rationalized that at 85% of capacity it became wise to plan and build the second side of stands. Once they were consistently drawing 85% of 17,000 fans they built the second side which added capacity for about 5,000 fans.

So my point is once we are consistently at 85% of Peden capacity it is time to plan and build extra capacity!

I have been to Peden.  The best thing to do if you actually need more seats is to NOT expand.  Tear down the stadium and start over.  The infrastructure of Peden is not conducive for the current capacity.  I couldn't imagine adding more people.  Adding on might be cheaper, but that place is a trainwreck already.  I would think that capacity crowds for 4 to 5 years would be necessary to consider expansion or a new stadium; not one or two games.  JMO

NOOOOOO! The entire stadium does not need to be torn down. As I mentioned on an earlier thread, the main section on the student side should be torn down and rebuilt. The student side can be built in a way that actually attaches to the corner but go much higher than than it currently does. Then you can connect the corners and build down towards the field. That would easily get the stadium to 30,000 and then the hill is in the south end zone for overflow.

I want Peden to keep that Wrigley Field feel to it.

Minnesota's 50,000-seat stadium cost $303 million.

Ohio has season ticket plans for $4.50 per game. And fans who complain about giving $50 to the OBC to get season tickets.

I somehow think a new stadium is not on the horizon.

Anyone have any idea about single game and season ticket sales since the Penn State game?  Might give a little insight on demand for seats long term....

Jim Schaus seems to understand the importance of striking while the iron is hot (e.g., Jim Christian hiring).  Wouldn't be surprised if they launched some sort of modest "enhancement" project such as closing the "horseshoe" with similar elevated seating, but with those seats extending down to field level.  Bet you could do that for $3 million.

Now we just need a monied supporter to kick in 50% or more of the cost.

I know we reached record season ticket sales before the Penn State game, so I'm sure it's higher. now. Will be interesting to see how the next few games stack up with NMSU attendance. With the $30 ticket price next week, I'm sure it will be more challenging to bring in the casual, local fan.

With the building/renovation projects that are going to start in the not too distant future. why can we not take some of that money and use it to help redo Peden?  I believe I recently read where the initial step in building/renovation work was somewhere just south of $500 million.  I think I also read sometime ago that overall the University is looking at spending in the neighborhood of close to $1 billion dollars.  Again, why can we not channel some of that money into Peden?

Because senior university officials (i.e. President, AD) would be keel-hauled for misappropriating the money.
Not to mention I'm fairly sure they don't even have a source for much of the money for that work yet.  There are lots of improvements needed to dorms and classroom buildings, as well as over-due maintenance, and I'd like to see that money spent on that (and grounds work) at this point.  Not that I don't think Peden can't or shouldn't be improved, but I think you stand a better chance of nabbing a large individual or corporate (preferably) donation to make that happen.

I am not asking anyone to misappropriate any monies.  What I was suggesting was if the University is going to dive into the deep end of the pool for that much debt ($500 million to $1 billion), what is another few million in the grand scheme of things?   After all, Peden Stadium is as much a part of the University as any dorm.

Gotcha.  You can understand how "channel some of that money" would lead to that interpretation.

80% of Peden capacity is 19,200.  If we consistently draw at that level, I could see a justification for expansion or replacement of Peden. 

However, we are in such a time of fiscal austerity that I don't envision it happening without an incredibly large private donation.

Ahh, i see what you're saying now. I was under the impression that they're hoping this $0.5-1 billion comes in the form of money directly from the state, targeted to delayed maintenance/upkeep of dorm and academic buildings, whereas you're thinking it will come in the form of floating a bond. I actually don't know which of these is correct. Anyone?

Is it such a bad thing that it came from family pack sales? Those fans are just as important as the others.

Not to mention, we've had the family pack for years and it's never sold out until this year. That's certainly progress.

Jeff is on the money here. The rule of thumb is when you are consistently selling out/filling 80% of your facility you began to plan for expansion. I think Schaus and the President (with is new 5 year contract) will absolutely start planning improvements/expansion of Peden.

Money from the state.  Ha!  The real reason in my mind that tuition is climbing so rapidly is that "money from the state" and federal government has decreased.
